classic horror film with chilling music

unlike horror movies these days
i believe the horror movies from the 1970s & 80s have such chilling and scary music - that it makes the movie more uncomfortable or scarier to watch.
the shining is just one of the many examples.jack nicholson plays such a crazy n sometimes funny character----"Wendy...I'm Home"
but the music sets the scenes and provides the atmosphere for the chills and scares. still gets the goosebumps when watching this movie.

This is undeniably one of the greatest horror/thriller films of all time. Now this film has been given a facelift that really brings it to life. It sports one of the best 4K transfers out there and is definitely a reference title for all movie enthusiasts.

The Shining provides a great 4k upgrade in sound and image quality. This purchase does include a bluray copy as well as the 4k however it does not come with a digital copy. The case and the disk is on perfect condition and everything worked great!

For a movie that was filmed in the 70’s it looks amazing in 4k. The steelbook is great for collectors.

As a collector, this 4K UHD SteelBook of The Shining is a must-buy. I popped in the 4K disc and was stunned at how great the video quality is. It's very film-like, as movies should be, with little-to-no digital noise reduction, making the movie feel... like a movie. The colors look vivid, and everything looks crystal clear. There's plenty of film grain as well, making this 4K UHD disc feel something like a 1 to 1 copy of a 35mm reel. I love it because it's identical to how films were presented in theaters.
The audio quality is also spectacular. It's not a Dolby ATMOS track, but we do get a DTS track that has plenty of punch with bass, clear dialogue, and surround sound effects. Everything Warner Bros has remastered for 4K UHD and Blu-ray thus far, from The Matrix to Batman, has sounded excellent, and The Shining is no exception. It would have been nice to also have the original audio on here as an option, but it's not a deal-breaker.
If you're a fan of the film, or have a 4K TV and a good surround sound system, this is one of those 4K Blu-ray titles that is worth checking out. I look forward to buying more of WB's 4K Blu-ray releases as long as they continue to put out this level of quality.

Shining 4k Review

I recently purchased "The Shining" in 4K Blu-ray, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations in terms of visual and audio quality. The 4K transfer brings Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece to life in a way that I never thought possible, with astonishing levels of detail and clarity. The iconic Overlook Hotel is more eerie and captivating than ever.
However, there's one disappointing aspect to this release – the absence of a mono mix. For purists and fans of the original sound design, the lack of a mono audio option is a noticeable omission. While the enhanced audio quality is superb, it would have been great to have the choice to experience the film in its original mono format.

Steven King may hate this movie, but it’s truly fantastic and even better on 4K! It seems like when anyone tinkers with his story’s Steven King gives it a thumbs down. But movies tell story’s different than book do. Sometimes people prefer the movie sometimes people prefer the book and sometimes people like both. It’s impossible to get all the little details of a great book into 2 hours of screen time. In the case of Stanley Kubircks view of The Shining I think he did a great job of getting the story right, but changing some things to fit his vision of the book. I love both King and Kubrick and they both have some significant stories to unravel. Bottom line is a lot of Steven Kings books don’t translate well to a movie (I can count more flops than successes) think about The Dome (2 successful seasons then it turned into a laughable mess). Pet Cemetery has been made remade and remade again. They get the story to a point, but they all have flaws. But this is about the Shining which you either love or hate it. If you love the movie you’ll love it more on 4K. Based on early reviews of Dr Sleep I’m not sure the story continues to be as good as The shining. But I’m withholding judgment on that. What I do know is the shining is a great Kubrick interpretation of a great Steven king thriller. Perfectly cast and now we get a fantastic restoration that has a better picture and better sound track! Pick it up!

What a great movie. God, man!
I love Kubrick but always thought The Shining was over valued. I was the 2001: A Space Odyssey type only. That was enough. Every other one of his movies were just ok or annoying. I like being wrong sometimes.
Shelley Duvall deserves an Oscar for this. As does Jack. Wow - how great are they now through my wiser eyes.
The hotel deserves an Oscar too. What a wonderful, beautiful, scary place. The bar tender - love him. Love the picture at the end. So poetic. And the maintenance worker , Scat - Oscar performance. Good job.
Kubrick, the master. Better than the book. Much better. No wonder he only did one King novel. I can't imagine taking a mass produced author's work and making it an actual masterpiece on film. Brilliant.
Thank you again, Mr. Kubrick for being the master of dramatic & scifi film. You never needed all the CGI that ruins drama today. Story isn't important anymore. Miss your genius.

The central character in The Shining is Jack Torrance (Nicholson), an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic, who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the isolated historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. Wintering over with Jack are his wife Wendy Torrance (Duvall) and young son Danny Torrance (Lloyd). Danny possesses "the shining", psychic abilities that enable him to see into the hotel's horrific past. The hotel's cook, Dick Hallorann (Crothers), also has this and is able to telepathically communicate with Danny. The hotel had a previous winter caretaker who went insane and killed his family and himself. After a winter storm leaves the Torrances snowbound, Jack's sanity deteriorates due to the influence of the supernatural forces that inhabit the hotel, placing his wife and son in danger

4K treatment of a stone cold classic

Right from the get go, the opening scenes of the car traversing the mountains comes alive. What was sort of a "meh" whatever opening title sequence is now imbued with dread and awe as the little car climbs higher and higher above the snow line. So, unless you've been under a rock you know this story and this transfer pretty much nails it. Details come alive and reward repeat viewing (the cans of Calumet on the shelves) everything in it's evil place. There is definitely grain to this film so, don't expect the age of this film to not show but, that is part of it's charm. Although I will say, 2001 set the bar so high for an old film 4K transfer, there is a little softness here in some interior scenes that makes you wish a little more digital muckety muck was applied. But, forget that and just buy it.

I’ve been a fan of this movie for a very long time and seen every version from VHS to Blu-Ray and can honestly say this movie has never looked better. It looks like this just came out of the theater yesterday. Very impressed with this remaster.
Some good extras but nothing really new here. I actually would have loved to see something about the remaster process but unfortunately nothing like that was included.
Note that a lot of materials says “Extended Edition” but don’t buy the hype. The UK version of this move has 23 minutes cut off the US version so the “Extended” version is still the same theatrical version originally released.

Often a film most remembered for lead role played by the inimitable Jack Nicholson in one of his very best!! Remarkably fine plot that lives as well today as when it was made in 1980. Perhaps only overlooked by this reviewer is that it was written (screenplay)
produced and directed by one of this nation's greatest filmmakers Stanley Kubrick whose film legacy is alive as ever 20 years after his passing. Seeing this in 4k is a treat - owning the film in this SteelBook makes it a dream come true for those of us who lived without any home video followed by years of VHS rentals. No where did Best Buy erred when choosing this title with screenplay, btw, based on Steven King novel. Thanks to Best Buy for this selection!!

This is a fantastic upgrade of the Stephen King classic, with a brand new 4K scan sourced from the original 35mm negative, overseen by Spielberg of all people! It easily bests the 2007 Blu-ray release. I doubt this movie will ever look better than this! Warner has once again outdid themselves with this release! The standard HD Blu-ray that accompanies this release is also culled from the same 4K remaster, and is not sold separately. So, if you don't already own this movie on Blu-ray, and even if you don't own a 4K set-up, this is DEFINITELY the way to go! Even if you do own the previous Blu-ray release(as I do) it's still a worthy upgrade.
Highly recommended!

Very high quality DVD. This is actually my 2nd time buying "The Shining". I bought it when it was first released on DVD and probably paid more for it back then. And that was low quality.
I really like "The Shining" so I figured this would be a good time to buy the Blu ray since it came with movie cash which I used to see "It Chapter 2." So basically I got to see the movie for free. I know nowadays you don't really need to buy DVD'S anymore since everything is digital but I like all the extras you get on DVD'S. I used to buy DVD'S all the time but now I like to pick only the ones that I really like and come with something extra like this.
