Hard to beleive this film was a box-office bomb when released 40 years ago (it was the summer of ET, a much friendlier vistor from outer space). But Carpenter's best film has endured and is now considered a cult classic. This is one of the most suspenseful science fiction movies the cinema has given us, with gross practical special effects (no CGI here) that hold up well today.
If you think office politics can be bad, wait till you experience the paranoia of The Thing. All the special features have been ported over from previous releases on DVD and Blu-ray, so 4K is the real selling point here.
The film looks better now than I recall seeing it as a lit-up teenager staring in wonderment at all the grotesqueries Carpenter puts on display. Great movie; one of the best of its era.

This is it. My favorite movie of all time, finally on 4K. I've owned it on practically every format. A movie that had me hooked from the first time I saw it as a teenager back in 1982 when it was first released. To me, it is John Carpenter's best film.
The 4K transfer is astounding. This truly is the best I have ever this film look. Even after seeing this movie so many times I immediately started seeing detail that I have never noticed before. The vivid colors, clothing, and landscape. Everything just pops. The sound is excellent too. There is a noticeably improved bass response and fairly active surrounds. My only gripe. If you are able to, you have to adjust the left and right front channels to maximum output on your receiver to even notice the separation. Once you do that, everything is beautiful. I've said enough here. Just go get it

My fifth time buying The Thing

I have bought The Thing on DVD, Blu-ray, Blu-ray again from Shout Factory, Blu-ray a third time when Shout Factory put out a 4K restoration, and now on 4K proper. This is because The Thing is one of my all time favorite movies, as it's a simple premise executed flawlessly by the perpetually underrated John Carpenter, who rarely gets the respects he deserves outside of the horror genre.
This version of The Thing is beautiful to look at and very much an upgrade from previous versions. I understand there are some shortcomings on the audio side for those using surround sound systems, but it's hard not to recommend this version anyway.
I look forward to buying it a sixth time in the future.

Great Transfer of a Modern-Day Classic

John Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror classic makes its long-awaited debut in 4K UltraHD with this solid release from Universal Home Video. The picture looks fantastic and the sound is decent (it seems to be missing a bit of the "oomph" present on recent blu-ray releases from Shout Factory).
The extras, however, are a bit on the lacking side. There is a great audio commentary track with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell and the 84-minute documentary "The Thing: Terror Takes Shape" is also included along with a trailer and a few outtakes.
What is lacking, and this is probably because Universal didn't have the rights for them- are a ton of extras that were included in the blu-ray editions from Shout Factory. If you're a hardcore fan of the film, you probably already have a Shout edition of the blu on your shelf that makes a nice companion piece to the new Universal UHD. But if this is your one and only edition, at the very least you have the best transfer of the film on the market and two solid supplements.
Overall, this is a solid release and comes highly recommended.

This reviewer has the DVD of this movie and decided to upgrade. The picture and sound of the DVD is, even for a DVD, not good.
VIDEO: 5/5. The picture is an appreciable enhancement over the DVD. Expected. Definitely 4K quality - perhaps more than the studio intended. Very good luminance and contrast. In fact, in the scene where the crew is inspecting the Norwegian camp, the viewer can easily tell the snow inside one room is fake. And, when the man runs into the snow burning and all aflame, it is clearly a man in an asbestos body suit. A bright picture. Viewers are able to see into the shadows, the dark scenes still have detail.
AUDIO: 3/5. Apparently, the studio used the same soundtrack from 1982. Center channel is clear and easily understandable. Thankfully. However, the sound is flat. The explosions do not boom, the voices even when shouting seem the same level as normal conversation amongst the crew. The most troubling, and hence only three stars, is the sound is sometimes stereo, other times 5.1, oher times something else in that there is sound coming out of every speaker but it does not match the screen. For example, when a door slams screen left the sound does not emanate out of the left front or left rear speaker.
So, the quality of the 4K video enhances the enjoyment of this movie, even amongst those who have watched it previously at lower resolutions. For those who expect the full package? Well, get used to disappointment - the audio tracks are acceptable by 1982 standards but not todays. In sum, purchasing this disc is mildly recommended.

Yes you do. Bonkers great transfer. I've owned this in just about every format (HD-DVD anyone?) and I thought oh man, do I need to get this again? Comparing this to my Shout Factory blu-ray (which was great for the time) side-by-side (yes I did) makes the Shout version look almost silly color scheme wise. They've gone back to a chilly, blue and black scheme and it completely works on my Sony OLED. Absolutely zero adds to the features and maybe some takeaways but, I'll be keeping my Shout Factory for that. But, I will be watching this version from now on. Truly immersive picture for one of the top sci-fi horror movies of alltime.

I've loved this film since I was a kid and I have to say this is the absolute best presentation of the film ever put on video. It looks like a brand new film with excellent detail, solid blacks, and an excellent range of colors. The sound mix wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but it certainly is no slouch. It is an older film made during a time when sound mixes were often the least funded element of the studios. Highly recommended!

Very curious about why people are getting a copy. I have not watched this movie yet and it really sparked my interest in getting a copy. Unfortunately, I tried preordering the steelbook but it was gone almost immediately. I was so surprised with the picture quality! It looks as if it was just shown just recently! Very pristine! AQ is great as well! This is considered as one of the best horror films of the 80's. Very very good! I highly recommend this!

The Thing Assimilates onto UHD

Universal’s 4K UHD release of Carpenter’s classic, The Thing is a mixed bag depending on what the consumer deems more significant in value. In comparison, Universal’s UHD disc is a knockout. Crisp, clear, brightened, and vibrant colors with mid to high HDR makes this a visual treat. Fans might be favorable towards Universal’s new remastered DTS:X audio. It’s heavy hitting, clear distinct dialogue, and is heard through its multi channel surround setup.
However, there are some drawbacks. Universal’s release noticeably omits an original 4.1 mono-mix from the 70mm six-track Dolby Stereo, a 5.1 and standard 2.0 audio options; as well as several audio commentaries (one of which, the classic Carpenter/Russell track is included on the 4K) and a load of in-depth, behind the scenes, interviews and making of features are all absent. Though, many of which were not carried over can be found on the 2016 collector’s edition release from Scream Factory,
In the end, any fan would be satisfied. Whether they wish to have more original audio options or are interested in the production of the film. Regardless with how one sees, this is the best release The Thing will see. A definite upgrade over the 2008 Blu-ray release too.

This movie continues to stand the test of time. Movie critics and film enthusiasts agree that Kurt Russell helps make this classic about an alien that lives inside its human house one of the best horror movies of all time. So many movies tried to emulate what this movie did and failed. If it is not part of your collection now then buying this 4K version is your time to correct that and add it to your library.

It is nice to have this movie in 4K, Blu Ray, and Digital 4K. This is one of my favorite horror movies. It's older but I feel like it was done very well and to this day it is still a great movie. I would suggest this movie to any horror movie fans. I don't know whether it makes a difference having it in 4K but when I had been meaning to add this to my collection for a long time and once I saw it go on sale it was easy to decide to pick it up

I have been a big fan of this movie since it first came out. The name John Carpenter alone drew me to it. And in 4K, the details are incredible and give you a true movie-screen experience. It is a dark adventure of paranoia, comedy, fatalism and determination. The visual effects and visual style from this movie have affected every movie that has come after it.

The crème de La crème of a 4K release for an older film. Picture quality is superb of a much deserving film! Worth every penny. I watched it on a PS5 and I was stunned at the quality. As for the movie, per usual the team of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter knock it out of the park. Good stuff here! Get some popcorn and enjoy!
