The Truth Is (Mostly) Out There

If you're a fan of 90s sci-fi The X-Files needs no introduction, with a 9 year run on the FOX network and a feature film between seasons 5 and 6 featuring the exploits of two FBI agents, scientist Dana Scully and her partner Fox Mulder, a man driven by the abduction of his sister as a child to chase the paranormal. The show was an enormous hit during its original run, although it did peter out in its final seasons, and a subsequent feature film in 2008 made very little impact at the box office. But, now, 23 years after it went on the air, nostalgia is high and FOX has brought back The X-Files as a 6 episode "event." The results, unfortunately, are hit-or-miss.
The middle 3 episodes (2-4) are quite good, with 2 and 4 being classic "MOTWs" (monster of the week) and 3 a funny one involving a creature who is turned into a man and finds out being a human isn't all that great. Episode 5 is just a mess, mixing a terrorist plot with tinges of Islamophobia with a bizarre mushroom trip by Mulder. None of it works. And episodes 1 and 6, dealing with a twist on the classic "mythology" about a conspiracy within the government to cover up and facilitate an alien invasion, are quite flat. Show creator Chris Carter feels rusty in his writing, and in his haste to cram so much material into just two episodes, does the viewer no favors.
The extras on the Blu-ray are quite excellent, however, with several commentaries featuring Chris Carter, several show writers, and stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. There are also several thorough documentaries on the making of the new series. It's clear this was a labor of love for the cast and crew, it's just a pity the results are so uneven. However, if you're a die hard X-Files fan, 3 good episodes and some great extras make this well worth a purchase.

As soon as I found out that there was going to be a new series, even though I heard it was gonna be a mini-series, I was completely on board. It was so good to see Mulder & Scully back doing what they do best. I hope that there's more episodes to come, because I want to see if Scully will ever get to see an alien, and if Mulder is gonna be there when she does, so he can say what we all want to hear him say to her, "I told you so!!" Lol. ...I just love 'The X-Files' series. I have both movies, all 9 seasons of the original series, the complete 'Lone Gunmen' mini-series, and even the PS2 game. I know that there's a 3 season series called 'Millennium' that goes along with 'The X-Files', as well as a lot of books, and a few comic books too, but I don't have them yet. Note that I said, "Yet". Lol. ...If you like 'The X-FIles' series, then you may also like 'FRINGE' & 'Wayward Pines'. Both shows are really good, but 'FRINGE' is up there with 'X-Files'. Its that good. It only has 5 seasons to the series, and there's also a book that goes with it, that explains some things that was going on in the background of the series, from someone elses view. I'm not gonna say who that person is, but this person is important in the series. If you don't get the book, its ok because its not that important, but if you become a big fan of it like me, then you'll want to know as much as you can about series. And you'll love Walter. Lol.

Direct sequels are hot right now, Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, and Independence Day: Resurgence being the prime examples, and The X Files offers a fresh twist on this: bringing back a television show that had been off the air for 14 years, but had a movie version 8 years earlier, on top of the first movie version 18 years earlier. Two mythology and four standalone episodes. My only complaints would be the brevity of the season, and I feel that bringing back Cancer Man detracted from his amazing death scene in the series finale. I also feel that Skinner should be the FBI Deputy Director by now, and Doggett should be an Assistant Director. I would also like to see more of the classic mythology characters, like Strughold, Covarrubias, Jeremiah Smith, and Gibson Praise. I do appreciate what we do get, especially since they respect and acknowledge the passage of time. The bonus features are very well executed. I hope we get more seasons, as well as the third movie that Chris Carter wrote.

While critics mostly bagged on the "limited series" run (aside from the Wereman episode, which received unanimous praise from them) fans on the other hand found a bit more middle ground, with some loving it and finding it to be comfort food of sorts, others not so much. I myself found a couple of the episodes EXCELLENT, a couple that were okay and maybe one that I wasn't so big one. All in all, it was great fun and tough to argue with what we got since we only had 6 episodes to bring us up to date, remind newcomers and old fans what went on before, AND give us new stuff.
The blu-ray looks and sounds FANTASTIC, the compression quality on the bluray looks LOADS better than the original HD broadcasts on Fox. Also, it's loaded with some really nice bonus material including interviews, deleted scenes, episode commentaries and more goodies. If you're a fan of the show, fan of this miniseries run or just looking to complete your X-Files collection, it's a must buy.

Having the X-Files Event Series on Blu Ray to review and enjoy is a joy. I have the iTunes version that was released with each episode of the series, but having the actual HD discs to play in my Blu Ray player (which I also purchased from Best Buy for this occasion) and project larger-than-life with my movie projector is a different quality of experience. The extra features on the Blu Rays (and DVDs) are delightful, chock full of interviews and behind-the-scenes workings of each episode. The writers (who are also the directors), actors, and many people on the production teams speak in depth about their work on the show. For fans of the show, it's a great glimpse into the working environment of making this series. I will complain that the packaging for the Blu Rays is lackluster. The art and design of the disks seem a bit cheap and not well thought out, and the case and discs feel flimsy. The content of the discs, however, shines.

The X-Files Are Back...Sort Of

So being a long time fan of the X-Files, and having seen the entire series during it's original run...suffice to say I was thrilled to hear it was coming back to TV. I was anxiously awaiting FINAL conclusion to the over reaching story arc of the show, that WOULD make sense RIGHT?
Well the very first episode SORT OF touches on it, as does the last one. But the middle four were completely unexpected as they were the classic "monster of the week" type episodes. Not that it's a bad thing, but after all these years I want it to be finally resolved.
Plus they introduced two new agents, whom i suspect will be having the torch passed to them. Not that they are terrible actors but the chemistry is just not there they way it is for David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
It left off with a cliffhanger, so I have no doubt it will be back but I have no idea when. For long time fans we are used to the wait. In the meantime I have this to watch over again!

I enjoyed this when they ran them on TV earlier this year. IF you bought the complete collection on Blu Ray back in november then your collection is not complete without this. There is also a spot in the collector box for this mini-series event. Highly recommended. Can only hope that Fox brings the show back permanently.

Massive X-Files fan. Though I always heard mixed things about the new season, I personally loved it. The first episode was a little slow, but it picked up after that. The only downfall of this season is the length. I think that attributed to alot of the negative reviews. It feels like the story and show wanted to do so much more, but were only given 6 episodes to do it. Hopefully this will result in a full length season 11 and fans will get everything they've been waiting for.

This is one of my all-time favorite shows and was ecstatic when we, the fans, got a miniseries... and I was not disappointed. To know The X-Files is to know that the show had an eclectic mix of episodes: horror, sci-fi, creature features, comedy, parody, conspiracy, etc. I lived for that show each week when is was on TV, and seeing their return was like their magic never faded. I haven't watched the Blu-ray set in its entirety yet, but so far it looks great.

I was a fan of the original series and enjoyed this return mini-series much more than I expected to. While the episodes varied in quality (I found the Chris Carter-penned episodes a bit dour compared to the others), I enjoyed the still-strong chemistry of the leads and the strong performances of all of the supporting cast. The Blu-ray has excellent video and audio quality, and includes a generous selection of great extras (commentaries, documentaries, etc.) I hope Netflix, the cast and crew are able to make Season 11 happen.

X files The Event

There wasn't too many shows when I grew up that I had to watch every week, but X Files was the exception. I think the show lost something towards the end but I understand Dechovny and Anderson both wanted a break and do something else, as for the Event , It was good to see both back in action but I felt that we watched the pair do somewhat of a role reversal where Scully seamed to be the one to have the "I want to believe" attitude and Mulder being the straight FBI agent. Good to see but a little disappointed as well.

The special event series for the X-Files (also being called "Season 10") was a little uneven episodically but overall I extremely enjoyed watching Mulder and Scully again. I hope to see more again soon. Both actors have stated their willingness to film more episodes, but not a full 24 episode season. I hope that the actors and excellent writers can once again coordinate their busy schedules in order to give X-Files fans more TV episodes.

I wasn't a fan when it was on TV back in the day. I did get a chance to watch the series now and it really is a great show. The new season really is great some classic story telling along with the regular x files feels. The only thing is I wish it was 10 or 12 episodes but we can only take what we can get. The transfer and sound are fantastic. If you were a fan of the original series get this you won't be disappointed.

This was a mature wiser version of the original series. Though the stars have both aged, there was still chemistry between them. As a fan from the beginning, it was great having them back on screen. I watched this limited event series when it aired on TV. Having the DVDs allows me to repeatedly enjoy this next evolution of the X-Files. I look forward to more "events" like this. Go Scully! Go Mulder!

The ten season / mini-series event has its hits and misses, but it's a welcome return for a once beloved TV show that cemented its place in pop culture and more. It's great to see Mulder, Scully and Skinner again, with a somewhat refreshed approach. What makes this set even better are the great making of specials and behind the scenes materials, showcasing the passion of everyone in front of and behind the camera working to bring this back to the masses. Well worth a buy.

If you have the compete x-files set on blu-ray, you need this to complete it. They left a spacer in the set to make room for this when it came out. I hate having a whole set of something only to have them come out with just one more that's left hanging out there by itself. I'm a nerd that way. Lol. Of course, I'm sure they will be doing more x-files at which point I'm going to have to deal with it.

Look, just seeing Fox and Scully back together again doing the X-Files again just makes my day! Was this shortened season anything like the old X-Files, maybe the first episode, but not much after that. Was it what I expected, absolutely not. I was actually pleasantly surprised at the differences! There was a lot more comedy. a lot more jokes, a lot more fun! I actually quite enjoyed the changes!

Any X Files is better than none at all. Each of the episodes kind of mirrored a theme from the old program, conspericies, alien abduction, a monster etc. One was humorous, one dead serious, several touched on previous themes and characters. Technically the video and audio are very good. If you were a fan you'd enjoy the series. But there's nothing here to convert new viewers to fans.

1993 called and it wanted to let you know it's ready for 2016! That's right the best agent pairing in television are back. This revival takes a few jabs at the difference between "back in the day" and it's humorous. The series is too short, only six episodes. You get some funny episodes a scary one and some dramatic conspiracy ones. Welcome back to a classic!
