Easy to set up, except, when connecting to computer, the software is kinda difficult. I set the camera up on the computer. It did not stay on the camera. It went to the default settings. So I had to set it up again while it was in my vehicle. It only records in 1 minute segments, Wish it was longer, but I understand.

I've tried many different dashcams. All of them were junk. They were advertised as 1080 full HD, but they weren't. This camera is exactly what it says on the box. Great video. Just works. Cool features. You'll love it.
Tech support is responsive. I had few questions and they were promt to help. Will be buying same one for my wife's car next month.

This Thinkware dash cam is one of the best available. Yes, you can find better, but you'll pay more. With built in GPS and safety features, you'll realize how good it is within a few days.

Steady Dash Cam, worth every penny

I bought this dash cam when it's on sale, less than $180 bucks I paid for it. It works much better and stable than the products some of my friends have. The LCD is clear and large, operation is very intuitive. Night vision is clear, too.
I have a 2010 Murano, there is an extra 12V power outlet in the trunk. I plug in the power cable there and tuck the cable into the rubber frame and route it along the passengers' side all the way to the windshield. The length of the cable is still adequate, probably, about 1 foot longer than I needed. The cable stays well and no one will notice any wiring.
As for the dash came itself, some interesting and useful features:
1. It warns you when you get close to the front car (only when your car speed is reasonable high). However if you are in traffic and speed is slow, it won't warn you when you are closing up the front car. When a car cut in front of you to your lane, it warns, too.
2. When the cam feels impact (as slight as you running over a speed bump without reducing speed), it will beep and keep the next period of time's video in a directory, which won't get deleted. That's useful when there's an accident.
All in all, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. My friend admire it and wanted to buy also. Too bad, it's not on sale now.

Like the camera, hate the mounting system

The camera is good. The mounting system makes me want to throw it away. The operating system is average.
Mounting System is not removable or reusable. If you stick it slightly off you are done, no re-positioning. There is no rotation, or leveling, just tilting. I need to change it from car to car so I had to purchase another mount. I can't take it for trips when I rent cars. I have contacted Thinkware twice and they have no other mounting options. You can't remove the camera from the mount without disconnecting it. So you have to pull the power, then re-power it in order to hold it in your hand and adjust the settings. Then unplug it and put it back up. Doesn't make sense.
Operating system is not intuitive. When you push event record it doesn't save the previous few seconds so you could not record an event without removing the card and downloading it before the card loops and records over it again. My previous Cobra allowed you to set the amount of time pre-event for manual event recording.
The lane departure, and impact sensor go off incessantly, even after setting the on the lowest sensitivity. I didn't buy it for this so I shut it off.
The image quality is excellent. The camera holds up in the desert where I live. If they would offer some better mounts and fix the operating system I would give this 5 stars.

The X-500 Thinkware camera performs exactly as advertised. When downloaded to my computer the images are very clear and the definition is exceptional. Coupled with the rear view camera it is a great combination. The only change I would recommend is to make the connector from the rear view camera cable to be at 90 degrees to allow for a better/closer fit to the rear view mirror.

After having 3 Necker S2+ die on me due to battery issues, I replaced it with the Thinkware X500. Installation and setup is pretty painless, although I'd preferred a bit more options in terms of recording resolution. One think I consider as a downside while other may consider a plus is the mounting platform. Instead of suction it uses a 3M mounting film, which means that you better be certain where you want this mounted before you actually mount it or it's going to be a pain to remove. Also the lens is not centered to the mount post so you'll need to align it to the lens and not the body.
LDW is decent (as long as the camera is mounted on the center of the windshield, but the warning noise gets quite annoying after a few lane changes. FCW I think is overly sensitive and will go off if a vehicle moves into the front at the same speed as you.
Overall video quality is decent, however lens flaring at night is still quite pronounced. The frequent reminder to reformat the memory card can get annoying quick too.
Overall it is a decent dash cam for the price but weird quirks and unconventional design prevents me from giving it any more stars (more 3 1/2 instead of 3).

The camera works like it should. Only thing I would suggest is to set the lane departure to on before mounting camera to the window. It doesn't tell you in the instructions to do that but if it isn't exactly centered the camera has two lines that run on the two lines in the road that will be off. The lines are not adjustable on the camera. Once mounted to the window the mount is virtually impossible to remove without damaging it and I haven't been able to find a new mount for this model.

I like the 1080p quality and the option for rear-cam along with GPS tracking and Speed tracking, the bump features secure footages from being overwritten in continuous mode but there is no option to lock already recorded footages. The footages records in increment of one minutes each and it comes with a 16 gb micro sd. The camera come in silver so it's easily noticeable, but overall it's good but could be better.

Been looking for a compact easy to
Install and use dash cam. This fit the bill. Easy install. No forgiveness for mistakes as the two sided tape is unforgiving. Set it and you're done. The lane departure warning is annoying and not very accurate. The close proximity warning was ok until an 18 wheeler got near and it alerted when the truck was in the adjacent lane. So I disabled both features. Camera play back is adequate but not stunning. Be hard presses tonid a license plate 6 car lengths away

Good Dash Cam, Poor Additional Features

I owned this device for about 2 weeks. The dash cam had great quality and the option for recording the rear camera was a great option.
However I subtracted 2 stars cause the 2 major additional features, forward collision detection (FCD) and lane departure warning (LDW) , that you pay so much more for are not sensitive enough.
In fact the FCD system would initially caution when you were at the distance when it should be warning you that you are about to hit a vehicle without taking immediate action and the warning itself would go off when you were so close it was to late and the LDW system wouldn't alert you that you were drifting till you were half way into another lane of traffic.
Also it was impossible to hear the audible warning unless you were driving with the stereo volume was off. If it received additional tweaks to the software to increase its sensitivity and an audio output that could be rebroadcast through the radio system I would definitely seriously reconsider purchasing it again.

Brand response from Thinkware Product Expert

Hi there!
Thank you for the honest review and feedback regarding your experience with the X500. We are happy to hear that you are enjoying the video quality and dual channel capabilities! For the road safety warning system and audible volume, we hope to provide some clarity in regards to these features:
(1) Please note that the LDWS and FCWS is not always going to be 100% accurate. For LDWS, there are 4 speed options in the dash cam settings. Depending on which LDWS speed you choose, it is ultimately used to lower the amount of false positive LDWS alerts. Lane changes that were made over this speed limit will be considered unintentional and result in an audible alert. The FCWS feature does not actually detect cars in front of you. Instead, the dash cam takes pictures and when it takes pictures of what it thinks is a car with the appropriate conditions it will beep. This is heavily affected by road conditions and weather conditions even on the lowest sensitivity setting. Sometimes a tree or a shadow or rain will randomly affect its accuracy.
(2) If you haven't already, please go into the dash cam settings and increase the volume. There are different levels you can choose from.
Please let us know if you have additional questions. We can be contacted directly by email ([email protected]) or phone (1-844-865-9273).

It handles Florida weather pretty well, good quality, but you need to reset your SD card every once in a while or it will stop recording properly, and you need to be carefull leaving it conected to your car 24/7, I had to jump start my car a few times until I realize it was the camera that was causing the problem. I don't have it wired yet. That might fix it.
