For the price, this low feature stove falls short

We purchased a Thor HRD3088ULP from Best Buy. We were looking for a dual fuel range, and after reading reviews on competing brands, decided to purchase Thor. We did not want wifi / Bluetooth / digital programmable controls. We wished for a simple range and oven without bells and whistles.
In terms of features, this oven has even less than we expected. It has a couple of things that seem as though they were just very poorly thought out. Here are our experiences with the oven after a couple of months.
1) The oven has no indicator light that shows that the oven is on. Zero. When you turn on the oven from a cold start, a blue light illuminates over the top of the oven knob. Once the oven reaches temperature, this light goes off. It cycles back on when the oven starts to heat again, but easily half of the time the light is off, with no indication that the oven is on. This seems like a horribly dangerous way to build an oven.
We compensate for this now by turning on the oven illuminator light when ever we have the oven on. It helps, but is a minor pain.
2) With regard to the oven bottom heating element, it is NOT sealed. There is a bottom plate that diffuses the heat generated by the bottom element, but there are holes fabricated into this plate. You can see the elements below. If you have something in your oven that boils over, it is going to get really nasty in a hurry.
3) The oven has slide out racks, which at first blush are attractive to have. However, these slide out mechanisms rob you of some oven space. The oven inside width is 24”, but the usable size of the slide out shelf is only 19.5” x 13.5”.
4) When set to its lowest setting (150deg F) for food or plate warming, the oven drastically overshoots in temperature. This is likely because the oven is somewhat calibrated to operate with substantial thermal mass in it such as a roast or turkey or whatever. Just know that the temperature setting of the oven will take some practice.
5) The gas burners on the top have a couple of drawbacks. First, you have one burner with a small simmer ring. The other burners are entirely too large to allow low heat simmer.
Next, the burners ignite, and go through a setting on the knob of being entirely too high of burn. Unusably high. You have to rotate the knob a substantial amount to get it to start to turn down. Then it goes from full blast to its lowest setting with only a small amount of change. This makes setting the knob “by feel” very difficult. We have to observe the flame level since just a tiny amount of change on the knob results in huge amount of change on the burner. To their credit, the low setting stop works well, in that it holds the flame and does not extinguish.
6) Keep in mind that this is absolutely a bare bones unit. No clock. No timer. No indicator light that the oven is on.
7) The installation instructions, especially as related to the anti-tip brackets (but in other regards as well) are horribly deficient. We had to do some careful measuring in order to make sure that we positioned the anti tip brackets correctly.
8) We were underwhelmed by the phone support. We called to see if we could get better detail on the anti tip installation and we received no guidance. Our phone support sounded like a person on their home phone. There seemed to be some family chaos going on in the background. We reported that we were missing a set screw for the oven door handle and asked to be sent a replacement. We never did receive one. Luckily Tru Value hardware came to the rescue.
9) The top of the stove is a little cumbersome to keep clean. The porcelain are under the burners has a lot of variation in the surface, and the cooling rack in the center gets in the way a bit. It is hard to explain, but cleaning is a little problematic compared to a range top that is more “flat” in feature.
All in all, we got what we were looking for. A relatively simple stove and oven. However, the overall design quality (especially an “on” oven indicator light?) is lacking and the gas controls for the top are entirely too sensitive. For the price that we paid, we expected somewhat better quality.
It will do for now, but this is likely our last Thor product. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!
No, I would not recommend this to a friend
