    Back into the darkness...

After taking a break from the bleak minimalist atmosphere to explore the sunshine noir settings of California in season 2, True Detective is back to the basics, and in proper form. Writer/Creator Nic Pizzolatto took the extra writing time HBO provided to craft another partner based, time-shifting, and cynical mystery crime story for this 3rd outing. While not quite reaching the heights of the long-baked first season, this particular story is following closely in line. Revolving around 2 detective’s search for 2 missing children, we cross a lot of seedy characters, and even take a moment to explore an incredibly interesting red herring, but everything provided to the viewer is always in question as the detective telling us this story is an unreliable narrator, suffering from dementia/Alzheimer’s disease in his later years. This season will leave you guessing all the way until the very end, and even then you may not reach the proper conclusions - this season is hefty and ambiguous, though only a few tiny unimportant threads are left untied at the end. If you dug season 1 and crave more after the short comings of season 2, this will make up for it in spades. I truly hope to see more True Detective in the future, this particular season did feel like it was a little too late to redeem itself after leaving the door closed for so long after upsetting fans in season 2, but Nic Pizzolatto has a plan to bring the story full circle if given a fourth season, and I personally would love to see that happen after seeing what was done with season 3.

This anthology series finally connected itself with Season 1. Season 3 was shot for the most part in my hometown which makes me a little bias on it seeing so many familiar landmarks. The story itself as it jumps through 3 decades really is done well. I think the story in general is reminiscent of things that happen all the time in government and with people with power. Lots of cover ups. Anyways I think the performances from Ali & Dorff are award worthy. Just watch it if you like gritty detective stories.

This season seems to be modeled after the first one, and even briefly refers to the main characters of that season. This is the most realistic detective drama ever presented. It shows the reality of the job and how everything isn't always tied up in a neat little package like in the CSI shows. Those shows have their place and are entertaining but this is more gritty and real.

I'm the first to admit that the True Detective Series is a bit on the weird side...but I enjoy weird so it is just my cup of tea. In my opinion the series is well produced, directed and has excellent stars who give excellent performances. Of course, Blu-Ray is the best format so you can't go wrong.

After a terrible second season, True Detective returns in its third season to the form that won it such acclaim in season one. Mahershala Ali plays one detective in three different decades--consumed by a case involving dead/missing kids--but the timeline is disjointed for storytelling purposes and to illustrate the senility that eventually overtakes him in the modern era of the story.

This is a great, somewhat emotionally dark series. An ex-police detective, in old age with his mind failing him, is forced to look back decades at a death and kidnapping left unresolved. Mahershala Ali is terrific as the brooding, very troubled ex-detective.

I forgot all about this series having a third season. Saw it on black Friday for only ten bucks and bought it. Each season of true detective has a different cast and story. This is the third season and it was intense and shocking. The ending surprised me.

Season 1 was groundbreaking and exceptional, Season 2 found itself lacking. This season tries something extraordinary with three (actually easy to follow) timelines that intersect and slowburn reveal the well-wriiten story arc and some of the best acting yet.

After a stellar first season followed by a mediocre second season, I would consider this third season to be even better than the first. Intriguing story line, great characters and fast-moving. Highly recommend.

True detective knocked it out of the park and with this iteration of the series we're back to intense storytelling, with a satisfactory conclusion to the mystery HBO knocked it out of the park once again.

It’s still very good, but it’s not quite as good as the incredible season 1. But it’s far better than the problematic season 2. And Ali is just plain amazing. He’s the biggest reason to watch this. The blu-Ray is terrific as all HBO shows tend to be so this is a great buy for adults for a taste for drama.

I know that's a controversial statement but, yes, I prefer this season to season 1. Show looks great on blu-ray and the extended cut of the finale is a great special feature. Highly recommended.

This season looks great on Blu Ray. Better than season 2 but not quite up to par with season 1. Season 3’s final episode leaves some questions unanswered. Overall a great season however.

Loves the acting and the story. The only thing I do not like is that it's in a standard blu ray case which looks awful next to the digipaks of season 1 and 2
