Customer Ratings & Reviews

Unicorn Overlord excels as a tactical RPG, offering deep strategic gameplay with its row-based combat, adaptable Tactics feature, similar to Final Fantasy 12's Gambit system. The dynamic world map and multiple storylines boost replay value, while VanillaWare's visuals and soundtrack enhance immersion. Despite a potential learning curve and complexity that might overwhelm some players, the game's gripping narrative, impactful choices, and talented seiyuu cast make it a must-own for tactical RPG fans.

Great art direction and 2D sprites from Vanillaware. No surprise there. Gameplay is great, aside from some bosses in endgame that require you to change your strategy to focus on two strong teams instead of a more spread out mix of teams encouraged in the beginning. Story is OK. Serves the gameplay well. Perfect for Switch.

One of the most unique art style ttrpgs ove had the pleasure of playing. The unit building can be a little overwhelming late game but you can put whatever together and it usually works.

Ive played the demo at random and im so glad i did because i ended up loving it so much. It reminds me of fire emblem and many other games. The animations is so great. Story is great. everything is great! Give this game a chance through the demo if anybody is on the fence. But im happy this is in my collection

Excellent strategy tactical RPG great character development gear progression in many characters. This place is it up with a new formula to automate combat with the stratagems in secret combinations

Excellent game! Can be a bit overwhelming at first, but the gameplay is solid and fun. Lots of side content to do, and liberating towns is very rewarding. Highly reccomend!

A stylish and gorgeous looking game that reminds of the days on the PlayStation 2. Definitely worth adding to your Switch collection.

The game came in perfect condition. My pick up service was fast and efficient. The game is a must try if you’re an avid rpg player.

Very good game, Definitely recommend for any RPG fan out there

I tried this and had to get a copy. Very fun game!

The innovation of integrating autobattling into normal strategy combat really creates the feeling of commanding an army battle. I hope fire emblem incorporates this in future games. Great memorable characters

Addicting battles and fight animation with a decent story to encompass the world. Its a different type of RPG, I recommend watching reviews or gameplay before deciding to purchase.

Unicorn Overlord is a Strategy jRPG for the Nintendo Switch an absolute delight to play. The graphics are stunning, the gameplay is smooth and intuitive, and the storyline is engaging. The game offers a perfect balance of challenge and fun, keeping you hooked for hours on end. As well as providing a engaging narrative that holds the player in it's grasp and never lets go. Strategy JRPGs, or Japanese Role-Playing Games, typically feature turn-based battle systems that require players to carefully plan and execute their moves in order to defeat enemies. These battle systems often involve a combination of strategic thinking, resource management, and tactical decision-making. In Unicorn Overlord, players control parties of characters, each with their own unique abilities and skills. Players must choose which actions to take for each character on their turn, such as attacking, using magic, or using items. Players must also consider the strengths and weaknesses of both their own party and the enemies they are facing. For example, certain enemies may be weak to specific types of magic, while others may be resistant to physical attacks. Players must exploit these weaknesses and adjust their strategies accordingly in order to defeat their foes. In addition, the game features mechanics such as positioning on the battlefield or the ability switch parties when near an ally should a battle commence. These mechanics add an extra layer of depth to the battle system and require players to think strategically about how to approach the battlefield. The world-building in Unicorn Overlord is also truly impressive, with each level feeling unique and immersive. It is a game that delves deep into the realm of political intrigue and power struggles. The story is rich with complex political machinations, betrayals, and alliances that keep players on the edge of their seats. The game does an excellent job of portraying the complexities of political power and the consequences of decisions made by those in positions of authority. The narrative is filled with twists and turns that keep players guessing about the true motivations of the characters involved. The game also does a great job of exploring the consequences of war and the impact it has on both individuals and society as a whole. The story is not afraid to tackle difficult themes and moral dilemmas, making it a thought-provoking experience for players. Unicorn Overlord's story is a gripping and engaging tale that will keep players invested from start to finish. It is a testament to the power of storytelling in video games and a must-play for fans of the genre. Overall, Unicorn Overlord is a must-have for any Nintendo Switch owner looking for a captivating and enjoyable gaming experience.

Unicorn Overlord is a beautiful and richly detailed tactical RPG that’s worth the purchase for any fan of the genre. It takes a little time to get used to the mechanics, but once everything clicks, the gameplay becomes incredibly satisfying. The world is vibrant and full of charm, with a wide variety of characters to recruit and customize. The story is deep and well-written, with strong pacing that kept me engaged throughout my adventure. The blend of overworld exploration and tactical combat feels fresh and different from other strategy games. Battles are strategic and visually stunning thanks to Vanillaware’s signature art style. Building your army and watching them grow across the five nations is both fun and rewarding. This is a great addition to the Nintendo Switch library and a must-play for RPG lovers.

Just a wonderful, beautiful game with a long and satisfying campaign. Anyone with a passing interest in strategy RPGs needs to play this as its a bona-fide instant classic for the genre and arguably Vanillaware's best game yet, and certainly their biggest. There are really only a few somewhat small criticisms I think can be levied at Unicorn Overlord. First the narrative, which has been pointed out in most reviews, is fairly derivative. However the dialogue is well written and the voicework is also quite good. The story just isnt going to blow you away and doesn't nearly approach the narrative level of Vanillaware's last game, 13 Sentinels. Second, the game might be a little too easy on anything but the hardest difficulty. You may find after sinking hours in with the game that you are just trouncing through it unchalleneged and perhaps wishing you started on the hardest mode. Part of what makes the game so rewarding is carefully building your teams and approaching battles strategically. Very casual players may not mind not having to tweak and plan as much, however, so its good the the lower difficulty options are present. Lastly the game does suffer from some inventory management woes later in the game. When you have 50+ units to equip and optimize it can be a little overwhelming sorting through all the equipment! Overall the slight weak points with UO do not at all detract from the whole of the experience. Hopefully this game will be VW's most successful game yet and bless us with a sequel.

Great game. Has a nice game loop. Troop and equipment setup can feel a bit overwhelming but you get use to it. Story, voice acting, music, and animation is fantastic!

vanillaware never disappoints, their art style is beautiful and their stories are always a blast. this game is especially great for fans of fire emblem, as its similar in many ways but is still a unique experience

Been looking for a good SRPG. This game more than satisfies that itch. Vanillaware artwork is fantastic.

The game play is a auto mechanic where you set up how they fight ( team of 5 eventually) and they fight their battles like that. You do get up to 10 teams and the script is garbage. You can turn the sound all the way down and ignore what they're saying and know what do the game is about after watching the opening. The fight scenes (that you skip) look like South Park characters going at it. As far as positive about this game. In fact, you can save your game at any point is nice. When'd you get the hang of it the tactical part of the miniature battlefield is good. There is lots of options to customize each character to some degree. But overall this is a bargain bin game. Or in modern words: Trash Game

This game has a light story thats purely used as a vehicle to push gameplay forward but the hook is so good! The game is part srpg with real-time elements in play. There’s a demo on the Nintendo eshop which I would recommend because while I do love this game it’s not for everyone. It reminds me of fire emblem in that there are multiple classes with clear counters, a promotion system for character classes, and the battles are automated once they start. Go give this one a try!
