NOT A SMART TV!

I returned this TV, it was mis represented on the website as a smart TV, when, in fact it isn't. You can only cast apps from a smart device to the TV.

Thank you for your feedback. A few things that might help you get the kind of picture quality you are looking for. First, make sure the Display is getting a hi-definition signal. This means making sure that you're source device (like a cable/satellite box) is capable of HD, and that it's connected to your Display with an HDMI cable that can deliver the HD picture. You can also change between pre-set picture modes on the display by pressing the PIC button on your remote. This will toggle between a few picture setting that look good in different situations. If your display is in a bright room try Vivid or Calibrated. If it’s in a dimmer room try Calibrated Dark.

Superb picture quality and great sound. The Vizio app allows you to connect the tv to your phone or tablet which allows you to use apps just as you would with a Chromecast. Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc all work flawlessly from my phone. Couldn't be happier with my purchase and the price makes this TV a steal!

Gr8 pic, bad sound, incompatibilities w/ composite

Great picture (1080p), but really requires a sound bar for better sound quality. Otherwise, it sounds kind of monotone.
I've also encountered bad performance with respect to video games played from older gaming systems (e.g., SNES, PS2, Wii) that require a composite-cable input/output. The best I can describe the refresh-rate/vertical-hold issue is like this:
http://i.imgur.com/1c2i8tY.gif
The Guitar Hero series also does not play well on this TV via PS2, either, even after calibrating within the games to compensate for the audio and video lag.
It also has a small remote without number buttons. It's not really a big deal, though, especially if you have a cable box that uses a different remote, anyway.
It also isn't a traditional "smart" TV, as it doesn't have built-in apps, though it connects via Wi-Fi and can have content from apps/services such as Netflix streamed to it through Google Cast or Vizio SmartCast, though I haven't tried yet. In the long run, I guess this makes sense, as it's probably easier to support Google Cast or Vizio SmartCast than a standalone Hulu or Netflix app, etc., on the TV, itself. Unfortunately, Amazon Instant Video will not stream to the TV through Google Cast or Vizio SmartCast, at least according to c|net. However, if you have Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, XBox 360, XBox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or a Wii U connected to the TV via HDMI or component cable(s), you have a workaround, anyway.
Overall, I can't really recommend this product, as it doesn't work for my purposes, though it may work for yours if you only need to connect later-generation consoles or cable boxes to the TV via HDMI -- or possibly component, but not composite, cable(s) -- or stream to it through Google Cast or Vizio SmartCast.

Thanks for your purchase and feedback. There are a number of options that can be adjusted within the Audio menu. VIZIO SmartCast™ products are controlled using an application instead of a traditional remote. This means that any VIZIO SmartCast™ device can be controlled using most smartphones and tablets. With SmartCast™ built into the display, you now have access to hundreds of apps. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to reach out to our Support team at 844.254.8088. -Randal

Good Picture but sound has a problem, sometimes

This is a good budget TV to purchase. The color is great, but its a bit difficult to get good colors on it. Sometimes the darkness is too much and overtakes the pictures. The app is stable and able to control the TV from my android phone.
The only problem I have is that sometimes the sounds change too much. I have to keep changing the volume when there are low sounds. At high sounds, I have to lower the volume because its too loud. For now I kept it at balance sounds so that I don't have to change it too much.
The chromecast is good, sometimes I have problems but it might be from the apps. I don't have to spend another $35 on a chromecast since this TV has it built-in.
Overall its a good budget TV to get. I would mostly recommend it to people who have internet because it requires internet to setup and make sure you have a smartphone because it requires the app to setup.

Last year's model works just fine

I'm generally allergic to broadcast TV; the advertisements are annoying junk and the fake news is just depressing and dressed up to scare you into compliance. So I wasn't looking for something to watch broadcast TV on, and that was just as well as the interface for selecting channels is dismal. The pathetic excuse for a remote allows you to go up or down one channel at a time. You can erase anything that the forced auto channel scan finds, and that you don't want to have, by using the free Visio SmartCast app. Even the app thought doesn't let you choose a specific channel to watch, which would be nice for someone who wants to watch broadcast/cable TV. If you have a universal remote with numbers on it, you can type the number of the channel, but as they're often 8+ digits long, I seriously doubt you're going to want to do that. With this TV, I would recommend not connecting it to your cable or broadcast TV, instead either get an external tuner, or enjoy the freedom of not being exposed to a warped world view.
Of course the real (and indeed only) reason for me to get this TV was the SmartCast (Chrome Cast) capability. Netflix and YouTube, as well as many other apps for your PC, phone or tablet, allow you to browse and select what to watch, but then "cast" video to the TV. It works well for the most part, though I had problems with WiFi bandwidth using Google Chrome browser's ChromeCast to stream Amazon Prime videos. Amazon doesn't seem to want to implement casting in their app, which is a shame, I might have kept the trial subscription has that worked. In the end I gave up and cancelled. Stability of the apps I've used and the TV's firmware is OK, but apps often seem to forget they can (or are) casting, which for me means digging around for a remote to pause the show while I restart the app. and re-find what I was watching, etc. So somewhat annoying when it happens.
I initially had a hard time getting the TV on my network - the SmartCast app insisted that the Bluetooth in my tablet was not compatible with the TV's version, so I had to get it onto my WiFi by using the second method - the TV becomes a WiFi hotspot which the tablet connects to, then you type in your WiFi info into the app to give it to the TV. The process was somewhat frustrating/confusing at first, and might be a customer service call for many, but it did get the TV on the network after a few attempts.
Finally, this is the 2015 model version, and is not a 4K TV. I'm happy to have last year's model and I don't need such a bandwidth hog even assuming I could find (or cared enough to look for) 4K source video. The 1K picture is beautiful and vibrant, and the build-in speaker sound is OK (though not fantastic, so while you can avoid the extra cost of getting external speakers, I think most people will eventually get a sound bar.) and with SmartCast, this was ideal for what I wanted to use it for.

Thanks for your purchase and feedback on the all-new VIZIO SmartCast™ E48-D0. We’re happy to share that we recently made changes to the product setup experience in order to make it easier and more intuitive. Unfortunately, Amazon does not support the Google Cast system used on our SmartCast™ products. However, there are hundreds of applications available that do, such as HBO NOW, Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, Spotify, and Pandora, just to name a few. There are many audio adjustments that can be made in the Menu to affect this. We recommend customizing these to find the best options for your setup. Because VIZIO SmartCast™ puts control of the display into your mobile device, we’re now able to make updates much faster and more frequently, right to your VIZIO SmartCast™ app. We realize this is brand new technology and it takes some time to get used to it. That’s why we’re committed to continuous improvement which is going to make VIZIO SmartCast™ the best streaming experience and easiest way to control your display from anywhere in your home. Excellent Price/Performance

I have a slightly smaller model of this 2016 Vizio TV and IMO it is an excellent TV. Especially when considering the price. The picture is excellent right out of the box. The sound is OK with plenty of volume considering the size of the speakers. The initial setup is a little awkward using a smartphone and the SmartCast app, but it does work. We have not needed the SmartCast app after we finished setting it up. My wife frequently "cast" (WIFI) YouTube videos from her tablet without any problems. The SmartCast app is not needed for "casting" WIFI. The supplied remote is very basic (channel, volume, input, etc.) but we mainly use the remotes for our HDMI connected cable box or Blu Ray player. I plan to buy another of the Vizio E series TVs for another room!

I read the reviews seen it had great picture and that seen one person say it didn't support Netflix but decided to buy it anyways. Great tv sound is pretty good for the speakers it has just turn on surround sound feature and it's good enough for me. Downloaded the Netflix app on my phone and am able to cast it on the tv no issues!!!! Overall a great tv for the price I think!! vizios are always great tvs for the price!!

One of the most frustrating purchases I've made...
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
...and I once owned a French-made car. I did some research online before making this purchase, but obviously not enough. If I'd known then what I know now I would have saved money and frustration.
1) I'd like to echo what other 1-star reviews said about the smart phone app. The remote that comes with the TV is wholly inadequate and the smartphone app to control your TV is a fad that I hope dies a quick death, alone and unloved. I have a 10 year old daughter who is begging for a smart phone...I don't need Vizio complicating things by making it impossible to easily control the TV without one.
2) Love watching Amazon Prime? Good, you'll still be able to on your smartphone, but not on this TV. Vizio stopped working with Amazon in 2014. But that's nearly impossible to tell from the packaging or online information...
3) I have a lot of movies on USB drive; who doesn't. There is a USB port on the TV but according to the Help Desk tech it's only for firmware updates. (???) Why would there not be a working USB port to play media on a Smart TV?? This TV has a component input and three HDMI inputs for media and that's it.
The options through their 'smart' services are frankly lacking. This is not a TV for people looking to 'cut the cord' on cable.
Since buying this tv I've had to buy a Roku, USB (SS) to HDMI cables and a longer power cable (enjoy the 4' cable it comes with). I'm starting to wonder if I wouldn't have been better off getting a regular flat screen TV, since nothing that Vizio provided is worth a darn. At least I would have had a decent remote if I'd done that.
I would only recommend this TV to a friend if I was trying to offload that TV and considered his friendship expendable.

Most Vizio TVs get good reviews. The hardware on this unit is good, which is why I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1. But the remote is a JOKE. It does not have a numeric keypad. You have to flip through the channels one-by-one. This is true not only of the built-in remote. The cell phone app (which is awful in all regards) does not let you type in a channel number either. Nor can you do so with a universal remote. So, if you have any intent of watching traditional cable or over-the-air, this product is awful. I'm taking it back.
I bought this after all the generic replies that Vizio keeps posting here, claiming that they have updated the software. I downloaded all the updates. It makes no difference for this fatal problem.

Poorly implemented concept

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Need your smart phone for even simple things like changing your channel from 2.1 to 5.1 without stepping through everything in between (here that means 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 4.1 & 4.2). The basic remote that comes with the set has incredibly limited functionality. Even a universal remote has limited functional as the interface is designed for smart phones and tablets. I'm certain there are some single occupant households where this concept might be functional, but if you leave with your phone the rest of the household is stuck unless everyone has their own phone set up for the TV, if you get a call you have limited access to the TV functionality, same limited functionality if you forgot to charge your phone or left it somewhere else,...
Stupid concept further hampered by a poor implementation.

Advertised as "Chromecast built-in", but not really true. Only certain apps. If you want to stream Watch ESPN, you need a separate Chromecast dongle and another source for the stream.

Thank you for your feedback. We are aware that content from the WatchESPN and ABC App is being blocked from casting to TVs and Displays with Google Chromecast built-in. This is a known issue with Google, and not a result of any technical issue with VIZIO SmartCast displays. We hope Google will be able to resolve the issue in a swift manner.
