Customers are positive about the BLACK SN850 1TB Internal Gaming SSD's performance, storage capacity, ease of installation, and user-friendliness, with many praising its compatibility with the PS5. A common concern is the need for a heatsink to manage heat generation, although many users report successful installations with added cooling solutions. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect. While some users experienced longer load times, the majority reported significantly improved loading speeds.

Got this drive installed and Windows installed and I am now getting close to the speed specs after having to change a couple things. Please read my tips, it may help you and save some frustration and even maybe save you from returning it. To get that max speeds this needs to be installed in a PCIe 4.0 compatible motherboard with a PCIe 4.0 compatible CPU. I am using this in an Asus X570 Tuf Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 3900X. This also needs to be installed in the M.2 slot closest to the CPU which has a direct connection to the CPU, I initially had it in the bottom slot below the PCIe slots and that one is connected to the chipset which is slower, I was getting like half the write speeds at first until I switched it. You also need to download and install the WD SSD Dashboard so you can enable the Gaming Mode, otherwise again, speeds won't be as fast. After those couple things, I am now getting closed to advertised speeds and I am happy.

Purchased to replace a slightly slower NVMe boot drive. Can't really tell the difference when booting, but it benchmarks almost twice as fast as the other drive. You will need PCIE 4.0 to see these speeds, I used a B550 motherboard. Benchmarking this drive I see read speeds of over 7GB/s, and write speeds of over 5GB/s, see the benchmark output for details.

Bought for the sole purpose of installing it into my PS5. With a $12 heatsink bought elsewhere this installed very easily. Speed test after formatting was around 6500mb/s. I've been using it for about a month now and have had no issues with it. One of the highest rated SSDs to install into a PS5 so I highly recommend this instead of other brands.

As advertised speeds, does get pretty hot 80c, paired it with rockets heat sink which cost about 20$ off Amazon, haven't broke 45-50c with it yet. File transfer multi 100gig files in a matter of a minutes. You won't be disappointed.

Great addition to the PS5. Make sure you buy a good heatsink from Amazon. Super fast memory. Loads just s as fast as the oem internal ssd. Some games it’s a bit faster. Simple and easy to install.

Best on the market! (end 2020). Better to have a heatsink on it.
My motherboard (msi x570 tomahawk) came with one, otherwise I would have bought one.
Look at the result in the image attached... Impressive!

Bought it for my PS5 and it works perfectly. The only thing to note is that you’ll need to buy a heat sink for it. I picked one up separately that fit and installed it into my PS5 without issue.

If you need to upgrade your PS5's storage for more space, then get this one and then buy a third party heatink, preferably MHQJRH M.2 2280 SSD heatsink. So far, so good. No problems putting it together with heatsink and then installing it into my PS5. Got more space to install more games!

Went into the store to pick up a Samsung 980 pro but they sold out before I could get one so I thought I’d try this one the drive itself is pretty good but the dashboard software is just trash I’m rocking a 3900xt and rtx 3090 so I know my system isn’t the problem so for the same price I say go with the Samsung 980 pro because it has much better software to manage the ssd. Every time I try to launch the dashboard it will stay on this screen for hours

It fits well for the ps5 you do need a heat sink. I used the EK-m.2 nvme heatsink this ssd. It fits perfectly where you can even close the ssd bay cover on the ps5. The read speed is up to 7000 I didn’t get that after formatting the drive. I felt the price could’ve been lower, but they supply and demand right?

I wanted to get the WD with the built in Heatsink, but I found this one on sale! So I went ahead and purchased it and also purchased a compatible heatsink on Amazon. I am so content I did, because not only did I SAVE money, I now can switch back and forth between about 25 games without having to delete and then upload a new game and then wait anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour for the game to download (depending on the size of the game). I was lucky enough to get disk driven PS5, but if you own a digital PS5! You need to upgrade your memory! Not only can you keep keep a ton of games available to you at the touch of your controller, you won’t need to to wait while you download another game (external SSDs still need downloading). Don’t be afraid of installing as it is very easy and you won’t damage your PS5 (as long as you follow directions). I am definitely very satisfied after upgrading my SSD memory, I hope you are too!

Great read and write speeds compared to a regular SSD at a great price too. This is a small jump in price in my opinion for significantly better performance than a traditional SSD.

If you are looking for a drive for your PS5, look no further. This drive is plenty fast and does the trick. There are other drives that are faster, but if you can't get your hands on one of those then you will not be disappointed with this drive. And through my testing the speed difference is negligible. Lastly, I can not stress this enough if you are buying this for the PS5, YOU NEED A HEATSINK!!! I would recommend a double sided heatsink that will fit WITH the thin metal cover inside your PS5. It serves as an additional heatshield.

If you want the fastest data transfer speeds go with this. As long as your motherboard supports PCI Gen 4. If you only have Gen 3 I would go with the SN750 instead for almost half the price at the same capacity. It's not cheap but if you want the best, newest, fastest technology then you are probably the person to buy this.
I've watched some reviews and some of the other M.2 drives with similar speeds had caching issues that this drive doesn't have. This drive does build up a good amount of heat in use so a heatsink is recommended. I used the one that came with my mobo and it seems to keep the temps low.
I've used Western Digital drives for years. I've only had one failure which I believe was due to water damage and that was on a mechanical drive that was years old. This is backed up with a 5 year warranty. I would also recommend downloading the Western Digital Dashboard software which allows you to see drive capacity, health, temps, and to update the firmware. There is a firmware update available for this drive which was done in seconds with no issues for me. At nearly double the cost of the 1tb SN750 you are paying more but getting double the read and nearly double the write speed.
