    Handy, but glitchy

The drive concept is great. The fact that it has 10 hours of battery life, and can charge your phone in a pinch, is pretty cool, especially on a backpacking trip. The SD card import speeds are terrific, great for DSLR camera backup. The wifi is handy, and is not intended to replace the USB connection in any way, it's best for casual file transfers and MP3 audio or 720P video streaming. Good Stuff: SD Import: OK, so I have backed up the contents of my Android phone SD card. My Note4 shoots nice 16MP photos and 4K videos. There are tons of other data on the SD card. On first import of the SD, it took longest, successive imports, it was to my delight, much faster! WD is doing some tricks here to only transfer files that are changed/added recently. Nice. In my 'real' camera, I have a 64GB card in there, and shoot mostly RAW images in tandem with JPEG. The card ignores any files previously imported and copies the new stuff. The downside, the folders are split up by import, so you have to merge later on. In any SD instance, there is a handy 4-segment LED bar that goes from 1 (empty) to 4 (full) as the transfer takes place. Very cool! You do not need a PC or APP to watch status. Great for that long trip without AC power... USB 3.0: It's fast enough. It's USB 3.0, or even backwards compatible with USB 1 and 2.x, it includes a USB 3 cable, that can be plugged into any USB port on a PC or MAC WIFI: It has dual-band wireless, it only works on one band to save power if you set it this way. The wifi is not even close to USB 3 speeds, which was expected. The ability to do streaming over wifi to my laptop or phone, while camping or stuck on a long flight, is a nice benefit over a standard USB drive. The BAD: The Android app is terrible. You can change SOME settings, but there are more available if you use Chrome on your phone... The app really does a bad job of organizing media, so that part is useless. Use other apps for this (plex). There are bugs galore. For instance, if you import photos over wifi automatically (a neat feature), the device will never set the import date and time correctly, it's off by hours for me. I think it defaults to Pacific time, even though I was careful to set the devices clock to Eastern time. My router has Eastern Time, my phone does too, so why are my times all screwed up? The Plex server might be cool, but read the Plex privacy agreement before signing up. Then read that you might want to subscribe to a premium service, then load the bloated app on your phone. It's all to time consuming for casual streaming of phone videos. If you have a lot of studio movies, I can see this Plex as a nice interface. I use the Twonky server option. It's open source, and no frills. It's nice to have two options, however. Another + for the HDD. USB vs WIFI: The drive violently spins down, then up, every time you dis/reconnect that cable! Yikes! This thing has a battery in it... just keep the drive spinning, please. I'd like the drive (and my data) to last years, not months! Speaking of wifi/USB, you can't have both at the same time. So, if you connect your PC to transfer, anyone streaming gets cut off. WiFI: OK, the drive supports wifi, but it can be a frustrating experience. The wifi disconnects frequently (to save battery?), resulting in a bad overall experience. I wish the wifi light would blink, showing data being transferred, that would be helpful. If you add a hotel wifi network to your HDD, ANYONE on the Hotel network has 'root' access to the file system if they find your drive. Um... WTF? (did I miss a password option?, there is one for the web GUI, and one for the private WiFI...) HDD: There is no encryption, so if the drive is stolen, your contents are easily read. Overall: I don't think this drive is ready for the masses, and I bet there will be a newer model, instead of WD pouring resources into this thing, to make the firmware better. There ARE firmware updates, so, who knows? For a power user, willing to learn the drive's limitations, this is a great product. It does not cost much more than a non-wifi enabled drive, and you also get a nice battery and SD importing. I rated it three stars, simply because for me, it's close to a 4, but for most, it's a 3. I cannot recommend it to casual users. I really hope some glitches get fixed.

First thing be sure to update it to the latest firmware. Second hook it up to your computer and read the manual that is on the disk and follow the directions there. This thing exceeded my expectations and for what I purchased it for. I bought it so I could copy my camera cards to the drive when they fill up and I'm not near my computer. It's got a built in SD card slot and a usb port for other devices to copy data from. I use it with my Sony XQD reader to copy my camera XQD card to it and it works just fine. Even the Sandisk XQD reader worked just fine. Now where I was surprised and extremely pleased is that you can also use it as a router gateway for when you are in a hotel. We left for a two night stay at a hotel and I wanted to bring some movies with me so I copied them over to the drive. I preconfigured it to use my SSIDs that I use a home so all of our devices would just connect to it when we got there. So when I got to the room I pulled it out, turned on my iPad and connected through it to the hotel wifi and got it all logged in and working in about 2 minutes. Easy as pie. Then I pulled out my Sonos speaker & Apple TV and plugged them and and within 10 minutes I had music and movies working perfectly. I was able to stream the videos from my AppleTV directly from the drive. It just all worked. I use GoodPlayer on the AppleTV to play the videos directly from the drive share rather than try and install Plex which it supports. If I were going to primarily use it as a TV streaming drive I would probably try Plex. But GoodPlayer works just fine for streaming videos from the drive share so why bother just for a few movies. I did plug the drive in to the charger and leave it there so it wouldn't power off while we were there. I use to carry a wifi router with me to get all my devices connected to the hotel network and now all I have to carry is just this one little box and it does everything I need when traveling. Now your milage will vary of course. I'm very technically capable so all of this was really easy for me. If you have no idea how to setup a a wifi router then what I describe may be a little challenging. But I have to say the setup of the drive is very simple and so anyone should be able to fairly easily get this thing doing whatever you want. My only regret is that I got the 2GB drive instead of the 3GB drive.

It's hard to say whether I liked or disliked this unit. It seemed to work beautifully using my laptop, but caused nothing but disaster on my desktop. I wanted a unit that would allow me to network my laptop and my desktop so that I could share files with an assistant and easily travel moving my data with me seamlessly. Immediately after buying this unit I moved all of my business data to it and left for an 11 day business trip. The unit worked with my laptop beautifully I was able to access everything and connect the Wi-Fi to the unit without a problem. However, when I returned from my trip and tried to use it with my desktop, which I use 90% of the time, I had nothing but disastrous results. I lost countless hours trying to connect to the network and trying to make it work. I finally decided to move the data back to my hard drive and return the unit and look for another alternative. I guess if you were just looking for a wireless external hard drive to use with your laptop computer, this might work fine. But I was not happy with the results for the use that I purchased it for.

Works as advertised. Connect to the drive’s WiFi (2.5 & 5 ghz) and you can use files as long as iOS can recognize the file. You can auto save SD cards once inserted. It puts each card in its own folder. I had no problem using Canon RAW files in Lightroom CC. I had to wait for a minute for enough of the files to download to begin editing. Lightroom continued to sync in the background while I was able to make changes. All of my edits are saved on the drive. Lightroom syncs your edits when you reopen later. Definitely a space saver. The drive is thinner than I imagined. It can run on battery. The only issue I had is that it doesn’t always piggyback off of my home WiFi well. Sometimes I had to change back to home WiFi to get internet. This drive meets all of my requirements. I can edit camera raws and video without using the iPads space. I can export finished files to the camera roll for offline viewing.

I just lost all of my data on my 2TB Wireless Pro I bought from BestBuy. It was an OK drive in the beginning, with a few flaws. The Wi-Fi signal is horrible, so I just used it with a cable. 2nd flaw was my baby girl pulled the cord while I was transferring data to my 8TB My Book drive. The drive hasn't worked since. I went to get support from the WD website and they told me to hold the 2 buttons down that are on the device, to reset it. That doesn't work. I try to contact WD and they don't have a number listed on the website, only a support email that will respond 2 days later. After waiting the 2 days they send you a reply with links to all the troubleshooting information you can look up yourself (the 2 button tip I mentioned earlier). WD support is horrible, and so is the MyPassport Wireless Pro. I used to stand by WD products, but they just lost a loyal customer. Buyers BEWARE!

    Lack of XQD support

    Posted
    PNWlovetherain

I got this in anticipation of the new Gnarbox 2.0, I needed something now for on-the-go downloading. Unfortunately, this device does not support an XQD card larger than 32gb it would seem. According to documentation on their compatibility list, that's all the decide can handle, despite it taking 128gb cards of other flavors. Any time we attempted to invest using the approved Sony reader, the device would go into full meltdown and all the lights would flash and the hard drive would be rendered inoperable for about 15 minutes while it sorted itself out. Upon asking WD for help, all I got we're hyperlinks and boilerplate responses unrelated to my issues. I will be returning this huge paperweight. On another note, if you're using this to ingest SD cards, it seems like a fantastic device, never had any issues with our tests on SD cards.

I wanted a wireless drive for my Microsoft Surface. So I bought this drive with "wireless" in mind, i.e., I don't have to attach a cord to it!!! Well, it did not need a cord, but it took over my internet access!!! First, this drive DOES NOT SHOW in MY COMPUTER!!! Second, it only shows on my network. So, using it as HD to put my photos then have Photoshop access it is not possible, I have to download the photos to my HD. Duih!!! that's an extra step I don't need and don't want. Third - I have to use it to access the internet. It's just so incovenient. Fourth - Don't even think of having One Drive or Dropbox connecting to it. Oh, it will say it can connect, but you cannot see your items. The items stay on your OneDrive and Dropbox, not downloaded to this drive. So, what's the use. I don't recommend it to anyone. I should have returned it. But I ended up keeping it because I got so busy, I ran out of time.

I loved the idea of wireless storage - especially with iPads and multiple phones. I Loved the idea that you can set this up on your home network and anyone with access to the network can have access to the hard drive - there’s many other things “ I loved the idea “ However the app- the main system to run this hard drive is buggy - glitchy - and everything thing else besides “operable” I kept gettin error messages- I kept having to close the app and open it. I couldn’t even add folders - this turned to my mood of “I love this idea” to “ what a huge waste of time. “

In concept this sounds like a good product, however at more than double the price of a non-wireless drive it should have worked flawlessly out of the box. Instead, after hours of trying to get it setup and finally talking to the wifi, any and all transfers to the device failed immediately. It was never able to transfer any files to the drive, either via wireless or plugged in. The worst part is that after registering the device, I could not login to the website with the account created, even after receiving the registration confirmation email. There was no place to manually register a device online at all. It didn't even recognize the email address as being in their system. Very frustrated with the software and setup of this product. Also much heavier that expected. I will be returning it as soon as I can.

This is, is a good product. It would be great if it worked as intended. Good: Alot of storage Fast enough HDD WiFi router inside Apps available for PC, Android and apple. Apps for transfer, backup and such Admin interface is nice looking Is a battery for charging phones and such. It lasts close to 10 hrs. Bad: WiFi uplink for uploading data to it is weak or defective Times out when uploading alot of data even though the connection is one to one. Router inside is not the best quality, worse than standard (sigaml reception and such) Software is glitchy.. says it has little battery every 10 min.. when it does not. (Updated the firmware and sent email to support.. little improvement)

It does work and it is a great little thing to have on the go to start backing up photos or video without having to bring your laptop everywhere. It does need some work however with how the drive works when you are using the app though. The app works great to move things around once you have stuff on it but as far as my experience using it, I wouldn't use the app to copy items from a memory card because most of the times it only did a partial copy (missing files) but when you go into the app and into the settings and decide to import the whole card that works and also when you plug a card in and you push the button closest to the card that works great as well, you just have to keep in mind that it will be copying everything from that card.

Weathers good, I rush out of my house to get some golden hour drone footage and when I arrive at my spot, my Micro SD card was full and I forgot to bring my spares. Luckily I had this in my camera bag and was able to backup my card and get some flying in. I think this is a must for all photography/videography enthusiast. Especially if you travel! I was debating to buy another expensive fast SD card or get this and I'm glad I went with this. The only reason I'm giving this 4 star's is because the App is horrible! But the ability to back up your cards without carrying a laptop is AWESOME!

Purchased the Passport to backup SD and XQD cards from my digital camera. The device is WiFi compatible and CAN use adapters to back up XQD, Compact Flash, and other memory devices. Battery life is good, and the device will charge while connected to a USB 3 Port on a computer. I am still learning how to configure, but it seems to over-complicate the folders created automatically. I really just want a simple folder to move and backup files on my memory cards while I am out at a shoot. I will eventually figure out the best method, so not a negative for the device. Purchased the hard drive version over the SSD based on price and total capacity.

    Excellent Alternative to Wire Connections

This device is a dream come true, especially when it is at 2 TBs. The wire connection works fine. However, the great difficulty was that there were no directions as to how to hook up the wireless connection - separately from the wireless network one uses at the same time. I had to wind up calling the website help desk to find out how to do this. I asked the HD representative why were these instructions not on the documents with the product. They honestly stated that the company did not want to put these instructions with the product and did not give a good reason for it. Typical with these companies who offer the technology, but don't have the solutions ready with the product.

I've had this for a week now playing and configuring the options and its been great. Not only can i just add my sd card so it copies the data to the drive automatically I can also connect another external drive to the USB port and make a copy (this is manual) of the data that was backed up. This is needed if you will be erasing your sd cards to free up space in the field. If this drive dies I'll still have another backup on another drive. One issue I have with the drive is that RAW files do no produce thumbnails. A workaround to this is just to shoot RAW and JPG. Setting up was a little bit difficult at times but once you get how this drive works you'll be fine.

Well ladies and gentlemen here is something I looked into deeply as a photographer looking for better ways to store my photos on the go. This device here is awesome to say the least. I bought it mainly for the feature that I can simply insert my sad card and have it backed up automatically and either keep or delete the files on the card afterwards. Now I use it as another backup battery for my iPad when needed. Or I can set it up wirelessly and transfer my pics with ease. Only thing I wish was that Best Buy had the 4tb device in because I had to settle with the 2tb instead. Either way I’ll still rate it 5 stars.

This is just what I needed when I am travelling and don't have to have a laptop or PC to download my SD Cards from my camera. This allows me to save my photos and use less SD Cards. It was just what I was looking for, with plenty of space. I only use this when travelling, so don't need it as a day to day external drive. The only thing lacking would be a small screen to view the photos; however, it gives you good indications that photos have uploaded correctly. It can also plug directly to a Laptop or PC, should you need a small external drive while away from home base.

So far my experience with this drive has been great. It was easy to setup, to change the password of the wifi, and to connect to it on my iPhone via the WD app and connect to it as a server on my Mac. I thought I'd only use this when I'm traveling, but I might end up using this at home as well. My only complaint is how bulky it is. It's a lot heavier than I thought it'd be. You'll want a case for this before taking it on a trip. Otherwise, I'm excited to use this as I travel while capturing footage and images on my SD cards!

The concept of My Passport Pro is pretty cool however I don't think WD was ready to release it just yet. I "transferred" all the data from one of my flash drives to My Passport pro and proceed to format the flash drive thinking all my files were saved on my new Wireless Passport Pro. Files were there but they weren't readable. I end up spending money buying a software trying to retrieve my lost data. 3 days and $100.00 later I have been able to retrieve 1/3 of my stuff :/ I DO NOT recommend this product!!

I have been looking for a portable drive that will work with my Mac and Windows PC and this works perfectly without formatting. I use the wireless feature to back up my iphone photos and it does auto back up too. For ios 11, make sure u change your camera setting to most comPatible to save photos to jpeg instead of the .heic file as it is unreadable at this time. very easy to use. Just download MyCloud app and you are there. Read the instructions that came with it. Detailed manual is also on their webpage or the my cloud app.
