This is the second Y's game I have played so far, and I must say I am falling in love with the series thanks to it. Mind you, I am still playing through, but so far this fast action, action RPG is just so much fun to play. Adol is an adventurer that hits hard and fast, and has plenty of experience from his past adventures. On this game, he won't be going it alone as he usually goes. This time he is joined by a small party, and each member has a different style of attack that is more effective against certain enemies. For example, enemies with shells get more damage from a strong hitting ally, most thin enemies are susceptible to thrusts attacks, and quick and bulky enemies without armor or shields are weaker against slashes. Most bosses are huge and/or intimidating, and ALL of them are intense! Thankfully the difficulty can be set to easy, if things get too hairy. Me? I prefer to get better and beat that hardy boss. The music is beautiful, and really pumps you up when you need it, the graphics aren't cutting edge, but are perfect for this anime styled art, the game moves smoothly, and it is quite fun to play!

A great game with a small problem or three

The things I really liked about Ys VIII were as follows: The game has a difficulty slider, so anyone can play it. The characters and overall story are pretty interesting. Above all, this action RPG is super fun to play, with many different game-play aspects thrown in over time to keep things feeling new. One last thing: the music is great! I found myself humming along to it. What didn't blow up my skirt: Not a whole lot of frame-rate slowdown, but enough to take me out of the narrative. Another thing that took me out of the narrative was the sporadic voice acting -- when a scene had it, it might suddenly stop and give way to text. Luckily I'm a reader, but it was still jarring. One more thing; see those creatures in the distance? The ones moving at 2 frames a second while everything else is moving normally? Yeah, that's weird. Overall, a great game. Well, hope that was helpful!

    Not what I expected

I expected an RPG with action elements. This is more of an exploration and resource management game with a great action battle system. The RPG element is more about building relationships with the characters, which is done very well. Everything you do in the game is propelled by a specific and realist reason. You're not just wandering around and bumping into stuff. You are exploring regions based on a story that makes sense. It's simple yet gratifying. I'm not saying this will rival Breath of the Wild or anything, but I'm having a great time playing and really enjoying the characters. Which is something that doesn't happen often for me in video games.

I've loved the Ys series for a long time now. If you like extensive games with fun, action-packed battles, energized soundtracks, and lots to explore, this is a good one. My only gripe is with the default controls, but the game has PLENTY of customization options, making it super easy to find a configuration that suits how you want to play. All around, an awesome game.

This is one fun RPG. If you are a fan of Tales-like JRPGs, with cool stories and music and very active combat, this game is right up your alley. It also has a really neat mechanic about forming a village of castaways and recruiting people to the village to grow that is tightly coupled to the story and is very engaging.

This is a great game that provides nonstop entertainment for about 40 hours. The story is interesting but it's nothing to write home about. The music is TOP NOTCH. The gameplay is fast paced and has you exploring a huge island with parts you can unlock once you advance through the storyline or complete certain objectives. The graphics are subpar to say the least. Overall this game is worth the price tag. It's a refreshing take on traditional jrpgs. Def buy if you've been considering it.

If you're a fan of this genre, you'll like this game. The combat and exploration in this game is really what shines. The story is good too, but not as in depth as Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The characters are diverse and interesting. Again, if you're a fan of the action RPG genre, you should get this game.

Although not as good as the PS4 version graphically, this is a great JRPG on the go. I play in handheld mode on my Switch. It serves plenty of hours of gameplay, has a great story, and provides a big area to explore. I would definitely recommend this game to the audience it appeals to.

This game feels amazing. The story is pretty good. The fighting/battle mechanics are fast pace and clean. Nice music. The characters and their interactions makes the game even better. Plus, being able to play this game on the go with the Switch is super worth it!

    Not The Best Switch RPG

I was very excited to play Ys VIII but ended up not enjoying it as much as I expected. Visually the game looks pretty bad and the controls can be frustrating at times. It took me about 38 hours to get to the credits and by the end I was just wishing the game was over already. This is a shame because Ys VIII actually has an interesting story and parts of the gameplay are very compelling but the rough visuals and jerky controls kept pulling my attention away from the positive aspects of the game. Ultimately I just wish the game were a little cheaper. It really lacks the polish of a lot of other $60 Switch games and if you are looking for an RPG on this system I would strongly recommend Xenoblade Chronicles 2 or Octopath Traveler before Ys VIII. If you are an action RPG fan or if you can get the game for $40-$50 then this game is worth checking out but it ultimately wasn't for me.

This is the 8th main entry of the series. Now don't let that scare you. All you gotta know is that you are Adol and you and your buddy get into random adventures. There's a few references about previous adventures but overall it's a self contained story. Gameplay is fast. It's an action rpg mixed with some survivor elements. You gotta get resources to help your community and if you play on higher difficulty, resources become scarce. You switch between a team of 3. The attacker, precision, and heavy. Each have their own special moves and are good for different enemies. Story is that your stranded on an island and you have to find the survivors and while you do that you chart the island. Music is ok. Nothing super amazing but there some good songs. Graphics look nice. Only issue is the dialogue. Your character doesnt really talk much. Usually says a few words and sometimes sentences compare to the other characters. Overall I recommend the game. There's more game mechanics that makes exploring so much fun

After spending a little over 66 hours total to complete Ys VIII, all I can say is... WOW! I had never played an Ys game before so I really wasn't sure what to expect, but I was completely blown away. I'm very glad that I didn't rush through or put it down to start Octopath Traveler immediately upon its release date, because the true ending of Ys VIII was definitely worth seeing. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think I enjoyed Ys VIII slightly more than Breath of the Wild. I certainly recognize that BoTW is a technically superior game in many ways, but I just had more fun playing Ys VIII. The story was more interesting, the characters more compelling, the combat mechanics more satisfying, and the party system & other RPG elements were very well done. In some respects, Ys VIII felt more like a traditional Zelda game than BoTW did. Don't get me wrong -- I'm a lifelong fan of the Zelda franchise and I liked BoTW quite a lot -- I just think I liked Ys VIII a bit more.

Solid Action RPG For The Nintendo Switch

The Ys series is great for action RPG lovers, and Ys VIII is a lot of fun. Works really well in handheld mode with no noticeable issues. The combat is great, but the default controls are pretty bad. Fortunately there is a lot of flexibility when it comes to remapping the controls, so you shouldn't have any problems reconfiguring things how you like. Graphics are solid and the gameplay is good. I haven't beaten it yet, but I've enjoyed playing it so far. Japanese language options were added with an update if you prefer it to the English voices.

I've played some Ys games on the PS Vita and was quite excited to play Ys VIII on the Switch. While I enjoyed the game, the frame rates were barely stable. They ran somewhere between 30 and 60 FPS, changing and making gameplay appear choppy at times. I understand it's a port. However, other ports have shown they can be a solid 30 or 60 FPS consistently. Some patches made it better, but it still goes up and down. Other than that, the action is quite fun, raids/invasions are fun, and the story is quite intriguing. Buy it if you like Ys games and the ability to play on the go; pass on it if you already own it on another platform.

If I were rating my flat enjoyment of this game relative to others I've played I'd give it a 5. It is one of my favorite game on the Switch. The combat is fun, the story is creative, and the collectibles give the game a more depth. But there are corners cut. It took a long time for me to understand what all the icons on the map meant. I found myself getting lost at times. The graphics look rough at times. Most of the "cut scenes" aren't fully animated, they often cut away to avoid having to animate or draw more complicated things. There is quite a bit of dialogue that isn't even voiced. In the end though, this is a really fun game that I often consider going back to, for a second play through.

Lacrimosa of Dana is a good fit in the long running Y's franchise. This game features great action-based combat in which you switch between party characters to battle monsters; while, attempting to solve the riddles of an island on which you are stranded. The gameplay is great. The story is good, particularly the characters since it tends to be more character focused than plot focused. All-around I had a great time. Definitely one of the better buys on Switch.
