A: Hi there. This model is for openings from 29" to 47". We cannot assure it will fit your opening of 48" and was not tested for more than what is labeled for this model.
A: Hi! The handle requires you to press a button on both the top and the bottom, so depending on your son's strength he may or may not be able to open the gate on his own. Since the gate is just pressure mounted your German Shepherd may be able to knock it over with a hard enough push, but it stands 36 inches tall so your dog may actually be able to jump over it :)
