A car subwoofer with an enclosure combines a subwoofer speaker and a dedicated cabinet in one assembly. Often called a loaded subwoofer enclosure, it comes with the speaker already mounted rather than requiring you to purchase a separate empty box.
A powered car subwoofer enclosure includes a built-in amplifier. A passive enclosure contains the subwoofer but requires a separate amplifier. Both types need the appropriate power and audio connections for your vehicle’s sound system.
A sealed enclosure has a closed cabinet without an intentional air opening. A ported enclosure includes a vent or duct connecting the cabinet’s interior to the outside. Product descriptions typically identify whether an enclosure is sealed or ported.
Car subwoofer enclosures commonly use medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, and some use plywood or molded materials. Exterior finishes may include carpet, vinyl, paint, or textured coatings. Vehicle-specific enclosures may also use fiberglass or molded plastic for contoured shapes.
Included accessories vary by package. A loaded enclosure generally includes the cabinet and mounted subwoofer, while powered versions also include an amplifier. Wiring kits, mounting hardware, speaker grilles, and remote bass controls may be included or sold separately, so review the package contents to see what comes with the enclosure.
