Q: what does wifi + cellular mean? does it mean you can use it as a phone and make/receive calls?
A: Yes, it’s unlocked but can be activated with a carrier of your choice and used as a phone.
Q: What is the difference between choosing the Verizon carrier vs picking the “unlocked” version?
A: If you choose the Verizon one you have to get your cellular from Verizon. If you choose unlocked like I did you can get your cellular from wherever you get your cell phone service from, Cricket, T-Mobile, At&t, Metro, etc.
Q: Do you have to have a carrier for the cellular to work?
A: The Ipad itself will work as long as you have a wifi connection. But if you are in a place with no wifi and you have no cellular service your Ipad will not be of much use. If you do have cellular you can connect almost anywhere, connect it to a hotspot, facetime, it's an amazing thing! If you don't have cellular I suggest you get the $100 cheaper version with wifi only, its still great.

Great buy
I wanted a tablet for cellular data and this works great. This is my 3rd iPad, the others still work but are older versions and getting slower. This one is fast with a better processor. Battery life is better too and picture is sharp. Happy with my purchase.

Sleek, nice design
Love this iPad! Sleek, nice design. The cellular extra feature is ver convenient. We use it for our Square stand. When we have an internet outage, the cellular signal comes in very handy. Would totally recommend.
