Spaceballs [The 25th Anniversary Edition] [Blu-ray] [1987]

If you love Star Wars (I certainly do) then you need to see this movie! Spaceballs is a hilarious parody of the greatest sci-fi saga the big screen has ever seen. The characters are great from Dark Helmet (the Darth Vader parody) to Lone Star (a parody of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, with a little Indiana Jones thrown in for good measure) even Pizza the Hutt (Jabba the Hutt). Each character is a brilliantly concieved parody of his or her Star Wars counterpart (no Boba Fett parody though). Spaceballs parodies not just Star Wars, but also Star Trek, Alien, Transformers, Fantastic Voayage, Jaws, even Lawrence of Arabia and Wizard of Oz. There's even a brief Planet of the Apes parody. The movie is well-written and well-directed. Mel Brooks put together a story where the gags make perfect sense within the context of the film, even when the characters are talking to the audience. The evil Dark Helmet rushes to capture Princess Vespa (Princess Leia) and the heroic Lone Star races to her rescue. Along the way, we are treated to a whole series of hilarious gags. My favorites are when Dark Helmet and Col. Sanderz (not a parody of any Star Wars character) are watching Spaceballs on video and when the villains capture the heores' stunt doubles. I also like the scene where Dark Helmet is playing with Spaceballs action figures. The extras include a nice retrospective documentary on Spaceballs and even a scene from the movie shown in Dinkese and Mawgese (it makes more sense after you see the movie). There is one joke in one very short scene I did not care for (when we hear of the names of the bridgecrew on Dark Helmet's ship), but that does not affect my enjoyment of the movie. Spaceballs is an absolute blast if you have not seen this film i recommend picking up this best buy exclusive. Not only is it blurry but it comes in a great metal pack although it does seem more like a steel book but I'm not complaining and it is at a great low price and plus my reward points it came out even cheaper! I only payed half price. The only thing I didn't like was the shipping and its not fully best buys fault. Its the shipper and the way its packaged. It was very unfortunate that my metal pack came debated from the back art work. I was very disappointed and sad to see damage on a film I was really looking forward to adding to my collection. I still do plan on exchanging for a new one I just haven't had much time. I think it would be great if Best buy would invest in safer packaging for steel book and metal packs since they are far more delicate than the standard versions. I only there are collectors that feel the same way i do or have experienced my issue.. I know i gave the rating a 4 out of 5 bout the shipping gets a big ZERO!

I remember watching this movie when I was a kid and not really understanding all the jokes. The movie just basically makes fun of a few different movies prior to it's release namely Star Wars series. The actors are so good at acting like bad actors it's what makes the movie so fun. Every scene they're is always something ridiculous and fun. Most of all it's something that you can watch with the kids and they won't get even half the jokes / banter. But it would be a good time for the adults at the same time. If you liked movies like: -Airplane -Blazing Saddles -Any sort of spoof movie Then you will love Spaceballs. Had to own it on BluRay as this is definitely one of the most important part of my collection and hopefully yours. You'll love it, and the price. I sound like a commercial at the end there eh? lol

All of the characters, from Dark Helmet to Yogurt is a brilliantly conceived parody of their respective Star Wars character. The gags all work great (except for one minor one that I don't care for but does not bother me) and make perfect sense in the movie, even when they are talking to the camera. Mel Brooks weaves a tale where gags and situational humor blend together seamlessly. I loved the part where the bad guys were watching Spaceballs on video. The HD transfer looks great, a marked improvement over the DVD. The extras include documentaries on the making of the movie and a nice tribute to John Candy. This is an essential Blu-Ray for any sci-fi fan, especially if you are a Star Wars fan! May the Schwartz be with you!

Spaceballs is a fantastic film for Sci-Fi / Fantasy lovers' collection. It is mostly comedy with puns best understood by people who are familiar with other flix (especially Star Wars IV,V,VI). Pros: This DVD version was from the bargain bin, and as such is quite a good deal. Quality was superb compared to the original VHS releases. Cons: Though, true collectors/fans should probably opt for the Blu-Ray edition. There is also a Mel Brooks film collection Blu-Ray that includes Spaceballs as well as other classics such as Young Frankenstein and Robin Hood: Men in Tights that would be a better deal if pursuing some of the other films.

Spaceballs is perhaps the best Sci-fi spoof of all time. With nods at Star Wars, Star Trek, Planet of the Apes, it really spoofs nearly every big Sci-fi movie ever, dating pre 1987 ("...they've gone to plaid!"). Mel Brooks plays the "Star Wars Yoda" who is the guardian of the Schwartz and is also heavily into Spaceballs Merchandising, Rick Moranis, is the "Darth Vader" spoof, Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman is the Lonestar, the "Hero", with his trusted side kick, Chewbacca spoof, Barf (John Candy). Although I have heard it called unfunny and lame by others, I think it is a very funny movie and deserves to be watched not only by Sci-fi fans, but by anybody looking for a good laugh.

Back when a movie parody didn't have a generic title like Date Movie, or Super Hero movie, which if anything are a bad joke of parodies themselves. This movie, though poking fun at sci fi, Star Wars in particular, never portrays itself as smarter than the audience and if anything gives it all a great homage, as opposed to insulting like other films that really only discredit the genres. I grew up with this movie and in fact saw it before the actual Star Wars. This is an absolute must have of must have movies. Your dvd collection is incomplete without this hilarious masterpiece. Trademark Mel Brooks moments and references throughout. The comedy will keep you in stitches and rolling on the floor. No, i'm not abbreviating that.

Ahh, what can I say about Mel Brooks and the good old days before excessive and stifling political correctness ? Spaceballs is a silly spoof of Star Wars and doesn't pretend to be anything but that. Add some silliness back into your life if you've never seen it. And then go get Blazing Saddles, History of the World Part 1, Young Frankenstein and other Mel Brooks movies and put your righteous indignation aside and just laugh. He's an equal opportunity offender.
