    Synopsis

The sci-fi series may start its third season in a standard way - the premiere, Evolution,, is a technology-run-amok episode - but the 1989-1990 year supplies some of the show's most acclaimed hours. Sarek brings Spock's father (Mark Lenard) to the new Enterprise, and A Matter of Perspective is a Rashomon-like murder mystery where Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is the primary suspect. Worf's family's past drives the drama in Sins of the Father, while Data experiences parenthood when he creates an android in The Offspring. However, the highlights of the season are undeniably Yesterday's Enterprise and Best of Both Worlds, Part I. In the former, a rift forces the Enterprise D into an alternate universe, where Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby) is still alive, and the Federation is at war with the Klingons. There, they encounter the Enterprise C, which was transported by a similar rift in time and space during a battle, a situation that creates one of the series' most popular and thought-provoking time-travel episodes. The first part of The Best of Both Worlds is equally beloved for returning the Borg to the universe of The Next Generation. In this tense episode, the cybernetic race targets humans and kidnaps Picard, assimilating him into Locutus of Borg. This shocker of an ending proved to be the series' most thrilling cliffhanger and a fan favorite. On the lighter side, Ménage à Troi, and Déjà Q, all provide humorous diversions from the more drama-heavy episodes, and Hollow Pursuits introduces A-Team star Dwight Schultz as the milquetoast - but much-loved - Barclay. Season three includes guest appearances from Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan, Andreas Katsulas as the sinister Romulan Tomalak, and Tony Todd as Worf's brother Kurn. ~ Kimber Myers

I have always liked ST:TNG better than all other Treks, especially the original. Jean-Luc Piccard is the consummate starship captain: always in command of himself and his crew, able to take action without histrionics (can you say "Kirk"?), and having the gravitas we would expect for someone in command of the Federation's flagship. As Sarok said in his final episode, "He would have made a good Vulcan." The third season also happens to have my favorite episode. No, not the cliff-hanging final episode. "Deja Q", of course. It is great to see all this again, this time in high definition picture with sound to match. It is much closer to the movie experience than before, especially in the double episodes, which must be seen together. The picture quality is as good as Blu-Ray gets, as is the sound. Thanks to the people responsible for going to the film masters instead of the tape versions for this series of discs. The difference between the two is astounding!

I purchased this season after getting the other two and enjoyed them enough to keep getting all of them on blu-ray. I really enjoy the "play all" option this one has that was missing on my DVD set (same reason I purchased the Twilight Zone series on blu-ray, I really love that "Play All" option!). I don't really look at the blu-ray extras as I primarily purchased these to play in the background at my workplace (sci-fi collectibles store) and everybody comments how much clearer the effects were enhanced for the blu-ray release. The only downside to this particular set is waiting for the next season, as this one ends after Picard gets turned into a Borg and you'll have to wait for Season 4 on Blu-Ray for the conclusion.

Season 3 of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" originally aired 1989-1990. Season 3 has some of the best episodes of the whole series. There are a lot of bonus features on this Blu-ray release and the remastered high-definition transfers look fantastic. The audio is also flawless. You might also want to buy the "Best of Both Worlds" stand-alone release because it has some bonus features not included here. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is a great series that any Star Trek fan would enjoy owning on Blu-ray.

If you're a Next Generation fan, this is a must own. CBS did a great job restoring this series in high definition. Hard to believe that the hard work of the production was diminished by the show being edited on video. The CBS restoration crew did the work on Season 3. Season 2 was farmed out, so the results weren't as spectacular as Season 1. The series really hit its stride with Season 3, starting with the second half of The Best of Both Worlds.

Another excellent season of TNG continuing the incredible cliff-hanger from Season 3. Something old is new again with the updated special effects. This show, much like the original, is lightning in a bottle. It is such a shame Paramount bean counters were so short-sighted that they ended this show after 7 seasons and never properly funded any of TNG's movies. Of course First Contact has some truly magical scenes and is awesome Star Trek.

The third season is the first GREAT season of the series. Notable episodes include The Offspring (Data's "daughter"), Yesterday's Enterprise, Sins of the Father (Worf returns to the Klingon homeworld to dispute father being branded as a traitor), and, of course, The Best of Both Worlds, Part 1. This season also has a wonderful Q episode and lots of Guinan. This is a set to own!

Star Trek: The Next Generation never seemed as clunky as the original series...the enhancements made by releasing the series on Blu Ray only makes it seem even better. I remember watching these episodes on standard definition on over-the-air TV years ago and I am blown away by how much better everything looks and sounds.

The 3rd season of Star Trek: The Next Generation was great and had one of the alltime great TV cliffhangers as the final episode. A series that all the family can watch and enjoy is a rarity in itself these days.
