    Synopsis

Scrapping the original series' limited "five-year mission" for a more ambitious ongoing one, Star Trek: The Next Generation aims high from its first episode. The Enterprise D is captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), a leader more reserved and thought-driven than the beloved Captain Kirk. Other notable crew members include Klingon lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn), security chief Tasha Yar (Denise Crosby), android Data (Brent Spiner), empathic ship's counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) VISOR-wearing lieutenant Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), Chief Medical Officer Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and her genius son Wesley (Wil Wheaton). Though the season features plenty of callbacks to its predecessor - an appearance from DeForest Kelley as "Bones" McCoy, a return of Romulans in the season finale, and an episode-long homage to the original series episode The Naked Time - Star Trek: The Next Generation also offers a number of its own inventions. The two-part premiere, "Encounter at Far Point, introduces audiences to the popular character of Q (John DeLancie), who returns in Hide and Q and other episodes throughout the series. The season also introduces audiences to family members of the crew, including Data's brother Lore (also played by Spiner) and Deanna Troi's mother Lwaxana (Majel Barrett, the wife of series creator Gene Roddenberry and the voice of the ship's computer). An attempt to turn the aurally gifted Ferengi into the Federation's new nemesis might have failed in The Last Outpost and The Battle, but an innovative danger was presented in the addition of the holodeck in The Big Goodbye. The first season featured guest appearances from the Mamas and the Papas singer Michelle Phillips, genre favorite Michael Berryman, and future Deep Space Nine star Armin Shimmerman. ~ Kimber Myers

Video Quality: Good. DVD Interface: Okay, apparently unchanged from previous releases. Disc Design: Highly Flawed. Packaging: Flawed. If you're a STTNG fan like I'm an STTNG fan, you'll want to actually WATCH these videos. Wait, no, I guess that would mean I'm not really a "fan". A REAL fan would leave it in it's originally sealed package. So let's try again. If you want to actually WATCH these videos, you'll find this release was not designed for that purpose! Obviously whoever designed the discs and packaging did not actually try USING it. Product testing folks - it's not just a theory, like Gravity! Let's begin with the discs themselves. Monochrome neutral gray. I kid you not! More, the logo and text are "clear", so you're seeing the disc surface for the lettering, which results in, you guessed it, SILVER ON GRAY. What a brilliant color scheme - provided you don't actually need to READ the text. And speaking of the text, we have no readily-readable numbers here, no siree! We have teeny-tiny little WORDS under the logo for the season (sorry non-English-speakers!), and somewhat bolder disc numbers (in words, of course) toward the bottom. The upshot of all this is that it's annoyingly difficult to read the labels and find the disc you want. To make matters worse, the packaging is plastic holders which hold two discs per side, with two sides each, making "pages" with four discs on each. The discs are held in place with clips which are shared on either side of the "page", each clip holding two discs. I'm including a photo so I can save myself a thousand words. :) The downside is twofold. First, the discs are "interleaved" in such a way that one disc covers up about a third of the one sharing it's side of the "page". So no matter how you position it, you will never be able to see the Season and Disc number on the partially-covered disc. Worse, the clips are stiff, and about a third of the time, when you pop one disc off, the one on the opposite side of the page will pop off as well. Since you won't usually see that, you'll find out when you move the package and the disc falls to the floor, perhaps damaging it. And of course, between the stiffness of the clips and the way the lower discs are covered, you'll be "sliding" them against each other and the packaging to get them in and out, possibly scratching them. Yay! But they do look nice sitting on the shelf, so if you don't plan on USING them, I recommend them! :-)

I got it at really great price! Love the episodes as they are thought provoking and give us an optimistic future. Then there are Special Features that are on the final disk for each season! Sometimes they interview the people involved in some of the episodes so you get more insight into the hows and whys. Or you can learn how they created some of the special effects. One of the features highlighted a woman who is in charge of cataloging ALL the props that are contained in several warehouses. To quote Spock, "Fascinating!" The only complaint I have is the case as it could have been better designed.

I've watched the new bluray releases of the Next Generation series and they do look great. If you have a "big" tv and watch mostly HD, then it probably isn't even a question of spending a little more for the bluray box set. If you're like me though, and you are just looking for an update to your old dvd copies, you won't be disappointed. If you're buying for the first time and just want to enjoy a show you loved without breaking the bank, this is for you.

Good addition for Star Trek DVD collection. Packaging was questioned in earlier review, but I found it to be the same as was used for a Star Trek TOS collection. While it's a little tricky to get the individual DVDs out, there's not much you can do when you're putting 10 of them together in a package.

This was a great buy for the price. As is in the review, the contents are great, but the packaging is terrible. Must be VERY careful when removing a disc or putting it back. Might scratch or even crack the disc.

This is a great way to experience ST:TNG at a great price. This is a boxed set that has all seven seasons of the show. The series is in 3 dvd cases as follows: seasons 1-3, seasons 4-6, & season 7. This is not a remastered set, but what was originally on tv.

I've been a Trekkie/Trekker for years and have wanted this collection since the series ended WAY back in 1994, but it was always out of reach (monetarily). I'm glad to see it finally become affordable for anyone to own who loves the Star Trek franchise!
