This is a must have for Trekkies! It's so fun to watch old episodes with enhanced visual effects, or watch in original integrity. Great extras with an unaired alternate version!

I reviewed the Season 1 & 2 DVD Star Trek TOS sets (gold, blue cases) and the same applies to season 3 (red case). It was my favorite show when I was a kid and still is. The DVD set brings it to life in brilliant color, so much better than the images on the old tube TVs. I watched it in black & white as a kid. It's amazing in these DVDs. No letterbox format lines, it's full screen on my 19" flatscreen TV. One of the best extras was the episode "The Cage," which was the pilot for the original concept for the show with Jeffrey Hunter as Capt Pike, Majel Barrett Roddenberry as Number 1, and Nimoy as Spock. It was reworked into the TOS Trek two part episode, "The Menagerie," when Shatner signed on for role of Capt Kirk. I've never seen The Cage before except in The Menagerie scenes. Very interesting differences. Shatner and Hunter both had The Prime Ingredient to play their respective roles. The only thing wrong with this set was that a hinge was broken on one of the disc holders, but the discs were all good and played with remarkable clarity. Very well worth the investment for people like myself who intend to watch this show again & again. Its artistically done sets, simplicity and color, and iconic soundtrack music all come together to make it what it is. No, its not perfect, there are inconsistencies in some episodes, but they created a winner. It's one of the few shows still being produced after so many decades. While I'm not into the newer versions, each generation has their own. I do intend to get the animated 1970's Trek set with the original characters and the Next Generation set with Picard, but that's as far as I go. Otherwise I'll be buying old SF movies and other old TV series sets, mostly from the 60's. It was unfortunate that I lost transmission on the 6 day a week rerun of the show right after I got this set. It still airs on two antenna TV stations in my area, but now I only get the late Saturday night episode. With this DVD set I can still Return To Yesterday again.

This is an outstanding television series that looks and sounds better on Blueray than it ever did on TV. I should know, I'm a longtime avid fan of the original series. Nearly every episode holds up very well and withstands the test of time. There are however, a few (very few) that have not aged well, but even those episodes are quaint and are certainly a product of their times. The enhanced visual effects are excellent and do not draw attention to themselves so they are a much appreciated addition. You can watch all these episodes without the enhanced effects if you choose to, for a more authentic viewing experience. My only complaint is the annoying episode selection screen which is not exactly intuitive or self explanatory. In other words you have to play around with it a bit before you understand how to change episodes, but once you get it, it's no longer a problem. Other than that, this is as good as Star Trek gets and I highly recommend it to fans of all the other Star Trek spinoffs. After all, you wouldn't have Star Trek TNG, Star Trek DS9, Star Trek Voyager or Star Trek Enterprise without the 5 year mission of James T. Kirk and his original crew. (Even if the mission lasted only 3 years.) This set is well worth your time and investment.
