Synopsis

The classic sitcom Taxi spent all of one episode establishing its premise and characters -- then proceeded forward with the confidence of a series that had been on the air for years. In episode one, the viewer was swiftly and economically introduced to the personnel of New York's Sunshine Cab Company. Alex Rieger (Judd Hirsch) was the most experienced member of the fleet and the only one who worked as a cabbie full-time. The rest of the drivers were moonlighting, pursuing their life goals when not pursuing fares and tips. Elaine Nardo (Marilu Henner) was an art gallery receptionist, hoping someday to establish her own gallery and high-class clientele. Bobby Wheeler (Jeff Conaway) was an aspiring actor who never seemed to get a break. Tony Banta (Tony Danza) was a boxer who spent most of his time flat on the canvas. John Burns (Randall Carver) was a naïve, bumbling college student, who only a few months into the series found himself struggling to support not only himself but his new bride Suzanne (Ellen Regan). And Latka Gravas, the company's mechanic, was a good-natured foreigner who came from an obscure little Eastern Bloc country and spoke in a language peculiarly his own. Then there was pint-sized Louie DePalma (Danny DeVito), the hostile, sarcastic dispatcher, who considered the day wasted if he didn't humiliate someone -- but who often as not ended up on the receiving end of humiliation. Debuting on ABC's powerhouse Tuesday night schedule as part of a sitcom lineup which included Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley and Three's Company, Taxi proved worthy of its company by closing out its first season as the 9th highest-rated TV program in the United States, tied with CBS' All in the Family. The series also racked up two Emmy awards, for Outstanding Comedy Series, and for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (single performance), an award which went to the indefatigable Ruth Gordon for her performance in the episode titled "Sugar Mama." ~ Hal Erickson

...because nobody walks when it rains!! There was another review of this product which incorrectly stated that this set was the shortened syndicated version of the show, and so should be avoided. I've done a lot of research on TAXI and this set (which I own) and I can absolutely confirm that these discs are NOT the shortened syndicated versions. Each episodes runs for approximately 24:30, which is exactly how long the original episodes ran for in the late 70s/early 80s. (Syndicated episodes are edited down to 22 minutes.) One particular avid TAXI fan assures me that there is actually EXTRA footage in some of the episodes which never made it to the original broadcast. That was actually a sweet surprise, and while these new lines aren't always essential, they are definitely welcomed. (One such instance is when Jim goes back to visit his father. Alex goes with him, and the dialogue between Jim, Alex, and his father is more than when originally first aired. There are several episodes where this is the case, some featuring a extra line or two, others featuring more.) Unfortunately, while these are not the syndicated versions, there ARE some instances when the episodes have been edited, but these are ONLY due to music right constraints. The episodes "Elegant Iggy" and "Jim's Mario" both feature noticeable instances of the cast singing songs that have been cut, for example. Yes, it's a shame, but rest assured that the vast majority of episodes (i.e. those without singing) are exactly as they were originally broadcast. Not to mention the fact that (aside from one or two episodes) the show looks and sounds better than it's ever been. And for those wondering: Yes, the bittersweet comedy still holds up fantastically today. In short: You SHOULD buy this DVD set.

Oh, You’re only part time? Sure, Everyone here is. See that guy, he’s just here until his boxing career takes off. Him? He’s gonna be an actor. Him? Going to school. Me? I’m the only one here that’s a full time Taxi driver.” “Louie, the dispatcher, You know those things under rocks that make you go yeech!, Louie makes those things go “Yeech”. And don’t forget Andy Kaufman as Latka, the immigrant new to American culture. If you can imagine late night taxi rides in new york city, and people trying to have a life while being working stiffs, this colorful cast of characters made for some funny, funny stories. This show won Emmy’s for a reason.

    Microcosm of 1970s

"TAXI" was one of the funniest shows not just of the '70s, but in American television history. With an excellent cast (yes, even Jeff Conaway) playing an eclectic gaggle of diverse characters, it's hard not to love this show. Danny DeVito stands out as the nasty-but-nice, fiendishly smarmy dispatcher, Louie DiPalma - a true comic gem. This set gives one an opportunity not only to relive these inimitable episodes, but to track the show as it develops its own world. The jazz score by Bob James, particularly "Angela" which became the theme song, is enough to evoke fond memories.

All 5 seasons of Taxi have been collected into a reasonably priced, easy to store package. While the show's humor holds up fairly well, the packaging apparently has suffered in an attempt to save money. The plastic case & disc holders were broken out. Best Buy's return policy (with only a 15-dayreturn policy, instead of 30, doesn't help matters).as I was going to exchange them but assumed it was a 30-day return. In summary, B+ for content, C- for packaging, D= for return policy.

I love Taxi! Don't know why I didn't buy this series before now but I'm so happy I did buy it. The actors are amazingly talented and this is perfect casting. The episode where Jim's applying for his license is classic and one of my favorites. If you're looking for laughs and super entertainment, you won't be disappointed with this series.

I purchased Taxi and Love Boat and Gillian’s Island DVD sets. I’m tired of today’s violence on tv which has now come alive. Real Laughs from the past make me HAPPY! I’m glad Best Buy still has these on hand. Thanks Best Buy!

If you are thinking about this purchase, you most likely remember the show. I think that it is even funnier now looking back on it. When nothing else is on TV, nice to be able to pop in one of these DVDs.
