Synopsis

The 'Burbs
Ward and June Cleaver have nothing on suburban couple Ray and Carol Peterson (Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher). Together with their perfect son, Ray and Carol are so clean that they squeak. Thus, when new neighbors Dr. Werner Klopek (Henry Gibson), Uncle Reuben (Brother Theodore), and Hans (Courtney Gains) begin evincing bizarre behavior, Ray is slightly put out. Carol thinks that Ray is getting all worked up over nothing. Ray and his fellow suburbanites endure all sorts of slapstick misadventures in the vain hope of getting "the goods" on the newcomers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

It's The Burbs on Region 1 Blu-ray, finally!

Rejoice! Rejoice! I've been waiting for a Region 1 Blu-ray release of this for a very long time, and did not want to order any of the Region 2 options available on Amazon. I'm not going to review the movie because it's 27 years old and you should've seen it and fallen in love with it by now. I will only tell you what the disc contains, since there's no information listed on the store page: in addition to the movie, you get an alternate ending and the teaser trailer, both of which can be found on Youtube already. So if you were hoping that the first U.S. Blu-ray release of this masterpiece would feature some decent extras, then hope no more, and let's just be grateful that we finally get any release at all. The picture and sound quality are what you'd expect from a film from 3 decades ago; this is not a remaster or anything like that. But it's The freakin' 'Burbs, and you need it, right now. Additional info Video: 1080p High-Definition Widescreen 1.85:1. Chapter selection: 1-18. Audio options: English 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio and Francais 2.0 DTS Digital Surround. Subtitle options: English SDH (Subtitled for the Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing). Case: Standard Blu-ray case (no recycle logo cut-outs or goofy side latches to contend with. Verdict For $9.99 I'm happy to add The 'Burbs to my BR collection at long last, even if it is just a bare-bones release. Cheers.

Nearly thirty years after its theatrical run, The 'Burbs remains a humorous portrait of the growing dissidence in dealing with "different" neighbors within a heterogeneous community. If you own any of the other Blu-rays of the film, I think that Shout Select's Collector's Edition is worth picking up, although look for it on discount. It offers nearly forty minutes of new interviews and has a couple of nice archival image galleries. It definitely vaults ahead of the Universal BD. Shout also duplicates the UK audio commentary, retrospective doc, the complete workprint, and alternate ending. For image quality, I would go with the Arrow (and do note that it also has an exclusive music/effects track and booklet). For fans of Joe Dante, Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, and Bruce Dern, the Shout Select earns a VERY HIGH RECOMMENDATION.

I can't give enough praise about this 1989 classic directed by Joe Dante ( the howling, Gremlins 1 & 2) and stars Tom Hanks & Carrie Fisher in a brilliant dark comedy that could easily been an episode from Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories (1985-1987) or HBO's Tales from the Crypt(1989-1996). The comedy and horror element is mixed perfectly like Gremlins. This film will delight and has gained a good cult status since its original release. The bluray Looks great on this transfer and is a huge upgrade to the previous DVD release. Also this bluray has a bonus feature of an alternative ending which is pretty cool. The only thing missing is the Uk bluray bonus feature of Joe Dante's workprint of the film which he is a different toned film. All together tho missing this bonus cut this bluray release we have in the US is worth the purchase because of the new transfer and bonus alternative ending. I highly recommend this bluray and suggest fans of Tom Hanks or Joe Dante get this ASAP!

Late 80's Classic Finally Has Come to Blu-ray

I love Blu-rays because they are, material wise, superior to DVDs which scratch so easily. That said, I love this classic. It is one of Tom Hanks good ole comedies (also loved him in The Ladykillers). Now this isn't one of those constantly fall out of your chair laughing comedies. I would call this movie a mellow comedy that leaves you with a good feeling at the close of the movie. The actors and the characters they portray just mesh together well in this movie. Bruce Dern is funny as the Vietnam Vet. I usually think of him playing a bad guy role, but this one suited him well. I just love the different personalities of the neighbors and how they band together at the arrival of some unseen new neighbors who obviously lack a sense of lawn upkeep. If it's one thing that will raise the ire of neighbors in a Burb, it's the lack of proper lawn maintenance. So go rent or buy this movie, it's a nice oldie but goodie to enjoy on a rainy night.

As far as the movie goes its incredible. For some reason this one never was a big hit but do yourself a favor and check this one out. The comedy is light and the story carries you through the entire film. The soundtrack is another hidden gem, one of my favorite soundtracks in a movie. Even after all the years I still repeat tons of lines from the movie! I have shown this to my 8 year old son and he absolutely loves it. As for the quality of the blu ray, its pretty sub standard. Its a generic release as it gets, but that shouldn't stop you from picking this up. This is the first time it's been on blu ray and is a major improvement over the dvd. There is an import that came out last year but it requires a region B player. I have never posted a review so that shows you how much I just wanted to share this movie with others. ENJOY!

This is the greatest comedy of all time, second is Clue. It has a whole bunch of great lines and an outstanding score by Jerry Goldsmith (Patton). Even though Tom Hanks is really, really funny, the best character in this is Art, played outstandingly by Rick Duccomon. You have to add this to your comedy collection. The movie itself is about three men (Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, and Rick Duccomon) who get obssesed with what is going on in Tom Hanks' neighbors house. Art thinks that the neighbors are killing the other people who used to live there. But he can't be right. Can He? This is a must have for people who love comedy and mysteries. The lesson: Don't judge a person by his cover....... but don't be too careful.

I have always enjoyed this film. Certainly not the best comedy ever made. Tom several years before his 2 Oscars & years after Bosom Buddies. Something I enjoy in films is when there is at least one scene you can play multiple times. To me this film has 3 1. When Bruce Dern’s character Mark falls off his roof & shoots out the window in his car 2. "Pizza Dude!" 3. At the end when the ambulance runs into Art’s house. Do need a new DVD package for this one with some extras. I do not know if they still mention this at Universal Studios Hollywood but they did the film on the back lot & at least used to mention it on the tram ride.

It's goofy and probably not the most memorable Hanks movie to most people, but this movie struck a chord with me and has always been my favorite Tom Hanks movie, which is truly saying something. Yes, with his wealth of work out there, I somehow choose "The 'Burbs" as my favorite. Very excited to have it on blu-ray, but slightly dissapointed that there are no real extras on this one. I am hoping for a proper extra filled release of this one day, but for now, just having it on blu-ray will suffice. Would love to see some behind the scenes as I am sure they all had a fun time filming this one.
