10 best classic films
||Posted .The Burbs is an awesome film about modern suburbia, with one house on the block where all the neighbors wonder why this one family keeps to them selves. It a must see, the Blue Ray edition released an alternate ending!

Great 80's comedy/thriller mystery!!
||Posted .I've been waiting forever for The 'Burbs to get a blu-ray release and when I found out Best Buy was the only store to put this out, it was a day one purchase for me!! Good picture and sound quality but it is very bare bones, only bonus features it comes with is an alternate ending and teaser trailer but it's great 80's fun.

It's Alright
||Posted .This is one of those movies that you'll pop in every now and then but doesn't really stick with you that much. I couldn't tell you any of the lines or plots of the movie. It's not a bad movie by any means. It's just....there. If you're a Tom Hanks fan, you'll probably like this movie. For me, it just....exists.

"Sardine?"
||Posted .Joe Dante is always, at least to me, a very underappreciated filmmaker, with his films usually misunderstood and box office disappointments if not outright failures. The 'burbs is Dante's follow up to his Oscar-winning but box-office disappointment Innerspace, tackling a one-location story about paranoid neighbors who band together to see what mysteries lurk with their new neighbors, the Klopeks. Ray Peterson (Tom Hanks) is forced to lead fellow neighbors Art (Rick Duccommon) and Rumsfeld (Bruce Dern) to learn why they are so secretive and possibly learn if elderly man named Walter is possibly a victim of the Klopek's. The film was released in February of 1989, and did reasonably well, but didn't do gangbusters as expected, and was a huge critical flop, some even labling the film one of the worst failures in comedy. Luckily, critical and public perception has changed and has become a popular film, developing a strong cult, and I am part of the cult. Funny, witty, some dark-ish humor abound with Dante delivering some of his best work here, complete with his usual filmmaking touch. The cast isnuo to snuff, with Hanks delivering one of his best, and last, major comedy films he has done. The technical work is well done and professional and you can tell it had a good budget to work with. All in all, it is a funny film, a comedy classic that will not satisfy most, but will make new fans out of the film. The Blu-ray specs feature a decent 2k remaster, but compared the the better version from Arrow, it is a bit if a downer. It does feature a sharp image for the most part, with colors and details being well done and grain being well-resolved for the most part, but I suspect part of the problem is sharing 2 versions of the film on one disc. The sound, featuring a DTS-HD 2.0 track is lively and features nice separation of stereo elements, but be reserved since it cannot compare to modern films. The extras are where the disc really shine, leading off with a work print version of the film, loaded with deleted scenes not shown elsewhere, but since it was sourced from VHS elements, keep your expectations in check. There is also a commentary with writer Dana Olsen, an over hour-long documentary carried over from the Arrow bluray, new interviews (38 mins.) with cast and crew specific to this release, an alternate ending, photo and poster galleries and a trailer. The Arrow release also had a 24 min. featurette along with an isolated score and a nice booklet, but this release has a slipcover and reversible artwork. This release is overall recommended, with decent specs and plenty of extras, but is lacking a couple of extras from the Arrow release, still i recommend this one hundred percent. You won't regret it.

An 80s classic in a fantastic edition.
||Posted .Owned for 1 year when reviewed.I've seen this film a couple of times before I bought the Blu-ray, but watching this restoration on this disc it was like watching it for the first time. It looks excellent. This is an excellent dark comedy with a killer cast (Tom Hanks, Corey Feldman, Bruce Dern, Carrie Fisher). Shout Select also includes an hour long doc and a workprint version, both are highly recommended. I love this film. In my opinion, it's a must have. I hope you feel the same.

the burbs
||Posted .Nearly thirty years after its theatrical run, The 'Burbs remains a humorous portrait of the growing dissidence in dealing with "different" neighbors within a heterogeneous community. If you own any of the other Blu-rays of the film, I think that Shout Select's Collector's Edition is worth picking up, although look for it on discount. It offers nearly forty minutes of new interviews and has a couple of nice archival image galleries. It definitely vaults ahead of the Universal BD. Shout also duplicates the UK audio commentary, retrospective doc, the complete workprint, and alternate ending. For image quality, I would go with the Arrow (and do note that it also has an exclusive music/effects track and booklet). For fans of Joe Dante, Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, and Bruce Dern, the Shout Select earns a VERY HIGH RECOMMENDATION.

Classic Tom Hanks film!
||Posted .I can't give enough praise about this 1989 classic directed by Joe Dante ( the howling, Gremlins 1 & 2) and stars Tom Hanks & Carrie Fisher in a brilliant dark comedy that could easily been an episode from Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories (1985-1987) or HBO's Tales from the Crypt(1989-1996). The comedy and horror element is mixed perfectly like Gremlins. This film will delight and has gained a good cult status since its original release. The bluray Looks great on this transfer and is a huge upgrade to the previous DVD release. Also this bluray has a bonus feature of an alternative ending which is pretty cool. The only thing missing is the Uk bluray bonus feature of Joe Dante's workprint of the film which he is a different toned film. All together tho missing this bonus cut this bluray release we have in the US is worth the purchase because of the new transfer and bonus alternative ending. I highly recommend this bluray and suggest fans of Tom Hanks or Joe Dante get this ASAP!
