Synopsis

The Godfather Part II
Francis Ford Coppola's legendary continuation and sequel to his landmark 1972 film, The Godfather, parallels the young Vito Corleone's rise with his son Michael's spiritual fall, deepening The Godfather's depiction of the dark side of the American dream. In the early 1900s, the child Vito flees his Sicilian village for America after the local Mafia kills his family. Vito (Robert De Niro) struggles to make a living, legally or illegally, for his wife and growing brood in Little Italy, killing the local Black Hand Fanucci (Gastone Moschin) after he demands his customary cut of the tyro's business. With Fanucci gone, Vito's communal stature grows, but it is his family (past and present) who matters most to him -- a familial legacy then upended by Michael's (Al Pacino) business expansion in the 1950s. Now based in Lake Tahoe, Michael conspires to make inroads in Las Vegas and Havana pleasure industries by any means necessary. As he realizes that allies like Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) are trying to kill him, the increasingly paranoid Michael also discovers that his ambition has crippled his marriage to Kay (Diane Keaton) and turned his brother, Fredo (John Cazale), against him. Barely escaping a federal indictment, Michael turns his attention to dealing with his enemies, completing his own corruption. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

I loved the first Godfather Film, I believe it to be perfect in every way, and this one doesn't fall behind. This film is both a sequel and a prequel, with two different stories (Michael's and Vito's), with excellent performances by Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. You are able to contrast both stories and find how family and power differs in both generations: how one individual built an amazing empire, and how his son eventually tampers it while trying to secure it. Can't stress how much I loved this one.

Considering The Godfather II has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's no surprise this sequel is as amazing as it is. The film picks up after Michael Corleone's success as the heir to the Corleone dynasty. It's twisting to see the huge transition from kind, patriotic Marine to unforgiving, violent don. The storyline arc to Don Vito Corleone's upbringing and rise in New York City is very well portrayed by Robert De Niro. Both actors deserve the praise and accolades for their performances.

One of my favorite movies, "The Godfather Part II" DVD is a must-own for fans of the film. The film is compelling and features one of Al Pacino's and Robert DeNiro's best performances. The film is spread out over two discs (it's 200 minutes long and wouldn't fit on one disc without sacrificing video quality). The only extra feature is an audio commentary by director Francis Ford Coppola, but the film looks great; the movie itself is better than any special feature. Highly recommended.

Al Pacino is excellent in his part as a simmering human volcano waiting to explode against his rivals, both real and imagined. The sub-story of Don Vito's origins in the old country was interesting. This gives the character more fullness as to the "how" and the "why's" for his personality traits. The family as a whole is sad. The family seems to live a contrived life believing more things will make them happy. Happiness comes from within a person.

The Godfather was a great movie all by itself, then The Godfather II comes out and it is even better than the original. It tells the story of Michael's continued rise to power and how Vito Corleone came to America and rose to become the head of the Corleone family. It has both Robert De Niro and Al Pacino early on in their careers and you can tell that they have a great future ahead of them. A definite buy for any mafia fan.

    lame steelbook

The steelbook is not as quality as others out there, and the cheap gloss finish is nowhere near as nice as a matte finish. I ordered both Godfather I and II, and both arrived with dents, and scratches - it really sucks when the packages are abused at the warehouse. In fact all the discs in my order were in bad shape - I will be very wary in ordering from Bestbuy again - IF ever again!

Don't watch this until you watched the first Godfather. This picks up the Michael Corleone saga and also fills in the backstory of his father hardscrabble life in America, at least until he decides he will shape his world rather than be shaped by it. So good.
