    The Grudge
This American remake of director Takashi Shimizu's popular Japanese movie franchise The Grudge puts Buffy the Vampire Slayer alumna Sarah Michelle Gellar back into the line of supernatural fire. When Karen (Gellar), an American student working with a Japanese health center for college credit, comes across a mysterious curse, she quickly finds herself embroiled in a fight for her own sanity, and, ultimately, her very survival. Known as a "grudge," the curse was born inside of a house after its inhabitants died while consumed by rage -- according to legend, the curse touches all who come into contact with it, and will torment those unlucky individuals until they, too, become part of the grudge . Each time the curse finds a new victim, it is, in a sense, reborn, and will continue on its path unless Karen can free herself from its control over her. This version of The Grudge is also directed by Shimizu, and features Jason Behr, Clea DuVall, Kadee Strickland, William Mapother, and Bill Pullman in supporting roles. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

      Scary, scary, scary.... and scary.

To date, director Takashi Shimizu has made 6 JU-ON/GRUDGE films. What is interesting is that each one contributes something new to the "Grudge Mythos." None of the films are merely "remakes" of another one. Although I personally find the first theatrical JU-ON film to be the cream of the crop, I think that this American version stands up well in its own right. It's a fantastic horror film, brimming with interesting ideas, unforgettable imagery and fine performances. If you are a Grudge enthusiast/completist, or if you've simply been meaning to pick-up a copy of the film, this Unrated Director's Cut is worth adding to your collection. The added footage is welcome, as are the excellent extras. The feature commentary by director Takashi Shimizu, producer Taka Ichise, and actress Takako Fuji (who plays the iconic, long-haired ghost, Kayako) is a pleasure from start to finish. It's exactly what a commentary should be, a combination of information and entertainment. The three are obviously having a ball doing the commentary and there are times when they sound as though they're giving their film the "Mystery Science Theater 3000" treatment. I was laughing out loud at times. In addition, Shimizu offers some interesting insights on the film's imagery, what it was like working with an American cast, etc. This commentary alone is worth the price for Shimizu fans. Also included in the Extras is a generous helping of deleted scenes. GRUDGE fans will enjoy comparing and contrasting these scenes with the earlier films in the franchise, especially the two original made-for-Japanese-television JU-ON films. As a welcome bonus, Shimizu, Ichise and Fuji offer interesting commentaries on all of the deleted scenes. This DVD edition also contains two early, very short (about 3 minutes apiece) Shimizu films based upon his "Grudge mythology." What is interesting about these shorts is that they both relate to events which occur in the original made-for-TV JU-ON films. For my money, the original JU-ON is the gold standard of horror cinema, and Takashi Shimizu is the reigning king of cinematic horror. I believe that, given the compromises which were forced upon Shimizu by his American producers, he still created a very worthy entry into the "Grudge mythos" -- and a brilliant film, period -- with his American version of the story. Great horror movie!

This is a great horror movie, my wife and I loved it. I like the fact that we are remaking all these Japanese horror films. The Japanese have great storylines and that creep factor, but thier acting and special effects are poor. We have better actors and better special effects, but weak storylines. However, a lot of people didn't like this movie, because they didn't understand it. A Japanese horror film usually has a more indepth plot, as opposed to our horror films which are usually slasher films and all have similar plots, 'man chases woman with chainsaw'. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of slasher films, but sometimes it's nice to have something different with a little bit more plot depth. That's why I like the unity between us and the Japanese. This film has a great plot, but got mixed reviews. From the people I've talked to that didn't like it, 9 out of 10 times it's because the plot was over thier head. So, if you didn't like it or didn't understand it, try watching again with a different mind set and maybe you'll like it. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it! But, keep in mind, this is more complex than your average slasher film. Also, I recommend The Grudge 2 and 3.

After watching it, my friends and I all though the same thing. “What a waste of time.” As a big horror/thriller movie fan, I dive into any chance I get to watch a good scary movie. This one just seemed silly. It was needlessly confusing and I found the storyline to be at most just OK. Movies this reminded me of was The Ring, The Skeleton Key, and The Amityville Horror… all of which were more entertaining and satisfying than The Grudge.
