    Synopsis

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Douglas Adams' oft-adapted tale of an normal guy making his way through the universe (it's already been presented as a novel, a radio serial, a television series, and a comic book) finally makes its way to the big screen in this endearingly goofy sci-fi comedy. Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) is a very ordinary man who is having a truly unusual day -- after discovering that one of his best friends, Ford Prefect (Mos Def), is actually an alien, Ford tells him that the planet Earth is going to be destroyed so that otherworldly forces can make room for construction of a hyperspace bypass. Since Arthur accidentally saved Ford's life years ago, Ford does him a favor -- he first gets him a ride on a spaceship passing by, and then presents him with a guidebook that will tell a beginner everything he needs to know as he hitchhikes through outer space. Along the way, Arthur encounters such interstellar notables as sleazy Galaxy president Zaphod Beebelbrox (Sam Rockwell), the girl of his dreams Tricia McMillan (Zooey Deschanel), perpetually glum robot Marvin (voice of Alan Rickman), interplanetary construction magnate Slartibartfast (Bill Nighy), and cult leader Humma Kavula (John Malkovich). The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was the first feature film for Garth Jennings, previously best known for his work in television commercials and music videos; he was recommended to the producers by director Spike Jonze after Jonze had to turn down an offer to head up the project. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      For fans only

Fans of the books by Douglas Adams will love this movie -- and you have to be a fan, or at least have read the books, in order to make any sense of the movie. The movie tries to cover all 5 books in under 2 hours and so the pace is breakneck. The actors do a good job with their characters, especially Sam Rockwell as President Zaphod Beeblebrox (you can believe that he would be the 'best bang since the big one') and Alan Rickman as the morose Marvin the Paranoid Android (I can't imagine anyone else being Marvin after hearing Mr. Rickman's version.) Mos Def and Martin Freeman play well off of each other and Zooey Deschanel is really good as the cute-yet-zany Trillian. What makes this movie good to watch has to be the special effects. I, personally, like the BBC Video version better as they had a little more time to explore and clarify the story of the 5 books. However, with the advances in modern CGI techniques, this movie is much better, which is to be expected. The scene where Slartibartfast takes everyone through the 'planetary production line' is alone worth the price of the DVD. Extras on the DVD like the Fake Deleted Scenes and the Sing Along to 'Thanks for all the Fish' are definitely pluses and the two separate audio commentaries are worth watching. However, I must once again caution that unless you are familiar with the books, you will lose most of the jokes and probably your patience with the story jumping leaps and bounds. But for the fans, this is definitely recommended.

The film is a fun, intriguing little nugget with lots of British flair throughout. Some very ingenious set pieces, great set designs, and well-acted roles detract from how difficult it is to transcend the source material onto the screen. The Blu-Ray extras are vast and enjoyable, and the overall picture and sound presentation is good, though DNR and grain are present. Perhaps a future 4K transfer will improve -- but until then, this is the best version of this enjoyable film to get.

It's all a joke, it's all ridiculous. The absurdists might find this depressing, but they're just a bunch of narcissists, anyhow. Demanding the world make sense and give you purpose is rather self centered when it already contains toasted paninis, attractive people in bathing suits, and Euler's Identity. I say let's sit down at the bar with the rabbi, the priest, and the frog and try to get a song going. Or at least recognize that it's okay to laugh at ourselves now and again. It's not the end of the world.

Great Movie, but not as good as the books

As a huge fan of the books, I saw the movie on www.42gifts.com while I was looking for other Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy gift ideas. I'd never seen it before but it gave me some good feed so I thought I'd give it a shot. Apparently Douglas Adams helped write it before he passed away and you can definitely tell that his humour is there. Overall it's good but not as good as the books

This is a hilarious movie for those fans of the British comedy genre. It offers wit and hilarity at every turn and fits quite nicely with the books. The previously reviewer didn't give you much to go on (doesn't surprise me) and leaves out the great acting as well as the iimaginative storyline. So long and thanks for all the fish!

Having read all the books in high school and watching the BBC series on PBS, I couldn't wait for this movie to come out. I was not disappointed. The casting and the acting are very close to what I had envisioned when reading the stories in high school. I introduced my teenage kids to the movie and they are now reading the books and love them.

I've been a fan of this movie for years, really glad it finally came out on Blu-Ray! Just a very fun movie to watch! I was so happy to hear that Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent in the movie) is supposed to be playing Bilbo Baggins in the new Hobbit movie adaptation!
