    The Orphanage
Pan's Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro produces director Juan Antonio Bayona's gothic frightener about a long-abandoned orphanage with a particularly troubling past. As a child, young orphan Laura spent her formative years being cared for by the staff of a large orphanage located by the Spanish seaside. Those were some of the happiest years of Laura's life, and now, 30 years later, the former charge returns to the dilapidated institution with her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old son, Simon, to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. However, something ominous haunts the darkened hallways of this silent, stately manor. When Simon's behavior begins to grow increasingly bizarre and malicious, Laura and Carlos start to suspect that the mysterious surroundings have awoken something ominous in the young boy's imagination. It's not long before Laura, too, is drawn into this disturbing web and the repressed memories of the past come flooding back in a terrifying torrent of tension and deeply disturbing revelations. With opening day drawing near and their situation growing increasingly grim by the hour, Carlos attempts to write off Simon's bizarre behavior as a desperate bid to get more attention from his distracted parents. Laura isn't so easily convinced of this theory, though, and soon embarks on a desperate quest to unearth the terrible secret that lurks in the old house, waiting for just the right moment to inflict devastating damage on both her and her family. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Un, dos, tres, toca la pared!

If you enjoyed The Others then you would appreciate this movie. The story focuses on character devlopment and your imagination. Its spooky, jumpy at times, and makes you pay attention. At first I didn't like this movie so much bc I was too busy comparing it to Pan's Labyrinth (which is what Guillermo Del Toro is basically known for). It didn't have the eyecandy that Pan's Labyrinth had but I like how the story unravelled and how the ending closed in on you (well at least that's how I felt). I remember the character, Tomas's face when they unmasked him. You feel sorry for him bc he is forever trapped in the innocence of a child yet he is haunting and scary bc his intentions are not something you'd want on your agenda! And I will never forget the chant that the orphans say in the beginning and throughout the movie: "Un, dos, tres, toca la pared! "(One, two, three, knock on the door!) Nursery rhymes and childhood songs now scare me bc I start to think that they may have an underlying meaning! It takes a little warming up to, but this is definitely a good spooky story.

      Great horror movie!

This was a very good horror movie! The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because it was in spanish. And don't tell me it's because he's spanish, He11boy was in English. He could've atleast made it English dubbed. Besides, you're selling the movie predominantly in America. It doesn't make sense. It's not like an Asian horror designed for Asians, then it eventually makes it's way to us. He makes it in spanish then sells it in America. I don't get it?! My wife and I loved this movie, but for us it takes the fun out of it trying to read a horror movie! I do recommend it, but put on your reading glasses. Also, two other great movies of Del Taco's you may want to check (or should I say read), are Pan's Labyrinth and Devil's Backbone.

*1/2 / **** This film has nothing new to add to horror or film (unlike Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone); merely a waste of time. I felt cheated after viewing this film simply because the pacing left me feeling atrophied as did the simplicity of the narrative. The story could have been told in 5 min. I felt no sympathy toward the characters especially the orphans. The movie is not even remotely spooky. In fact the movie felt quite contrived and barren of life. The critical reception to the film is quite appalling. I love Roger Ebert but given that he gave this film **** out of **** leaves me very baffled. Buttom line DON'T BOTHER!

This is what a horror/thriller should be!!!!

This was one of the best horror/thriller movies I've seen in a very long time. Nowadays all the horror/thriller movies that come out are so cliched!!! This one is different, it focuses on character development more than it does on the horror side, which makes you get into the movie. Awesome plot and ending, very well done. Plus its in spanish which gives it this cool and erie feel. And its produced by the guy who made Pan's Labyrinth, which was another amazing movie!!!

      New Favorite Movie

Once again, Guillermo Del Torro delivers another brilliant movie. I was surprised by the ending that definitely change my view on life. This movie makes you question what is real for the main character and you find yourself believing in a happy ending when you should be expecting the worst. The Orphanage takes horror to a new and refreshing level and I love that it's in Spanish. If you like Pan's Labyrinth, you will definitely love The Orphanage and The Devil's Backbone, another great GDT movie.

First, let me say that, if you are only a big fan of slasher horror films, you probably won't like this film. Why? Because it provides its thrills and chills in a much more cerebral fashion. If that's your cup of tea, you'll love it. I hate spoilers, so I won't give details, but this is an atmospheric chiller that true film lovers will enjoy. Check it out!

      Del Toro is wonderful

This movie is wonderful. I've told everyone I know to watch it and if they haven't seen G. Del Toro's other movie (Pan's Labyrinth) they should see that as well. This movie will blind side you with twists that you will never see coming. This movie will seriously creep you out at the end. Hard to say anymore about it w/out giving anything away. A+, they just don't make movies like this anymore, it's a must see!
