    Synopsis

    The Pagemaster
A young boy overcomes his obsessive fears by discovering a love for books in this animated fantasy adventure. In a live action wraparound, Macaulay Culkin stars as Richard Tyler, an easily bullied, nervous wreck of a kid who's an expert on safety statistics. His mother and father (Mel Harris and Ed Begley, Jr.) don't know how to inspire their son to embrace life boldly. Barely able to leave the house, Richard ventures out one day, but he gets lost in a storm and ends up at a mysterious library. Inside, he slips, knocks himself unconscious and finds himself in a cartoon realm where books come to life. Guided by Adventure (Patrick Stewart), Fantasy (Whoopi Goldberg) and Horror (Frank Welker), Tyler experiences the adventures of classic novels such as Moby Dick and Treasure Island, and he even meets some famed fictional characters, such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Leonard Nimoy). Through his experiences in the pages of the legendary books, Richard confronts his phobias and learns to face life more courageously. The Pagemaster was directed by Joe Johnston, a former special effects supervisor and production designer who later directed Jumanji (1995) and October Sky (1999). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I first watched this timeless classic when my children were in elementary and middle school, and was very impressed by both the story line and as a wholesome movie for children--which also inspired and reinforced the joy of reading. At the time, my youngest was in 2nd or 3rd grade and attended after school daycare where movies were shown to the children every Friday. Since I worked in a local library at the time, I often supplied the films for the children to watch and The Pagemaster was such a huge hit (as well as being educational) that I made sure to take it to the daycare at least once a year for the remainder of my daughter's elementary school days! Several years later, I bought the film as a gift for a child of a friend.

Back in ye olden days of singing lions, immigrant mice, and strong transforming ranger people the still-young Mr. Culkin played a star role in what can only be a big budget half live-action half-cartoon movie secretly backed by the nation's libraries. Its a good tale and like all its other 90's brethren, amazingly campy. Those of us that aged through or formative years during this era have an unnatural love for the wacky and whimsical. This is all of both and more. It may also hold a good message to our current generation of tweens who barely pick up books now days.

Back before Harry Potter stole the magical world on the Big Screen there was The Pagemaster. Such a great live-action to animation movie starring Macaulay Culkin and Christopher Lloyd. Definitely recommend it to any who grew up in the 90s and didn't have a chance to check it out. Also doesn't hurt that it's only about $5.

My son remembered seeing the movie when he was 5 or 6 and wanted to watch it again 10 years later. It is way more advanced than I was expecting and parts are very dark and odd. I was totally surprised at the novels the characters "visit" as none of them are children's stories but if you have an advanced reader, his/her interest may be peeked in things like "Moby Dick" and Jeckel and Hyde after this.

Animation over live action is not easy, and in the 90's we didn't have the tech we have today, and yet this thing is beautifully done. The story is good, the characters are fun and the animation is impressive for its time and still solid today.

Combination of live action and cartoon. Has a good story line and a few twist. It held our attention for the most part. Just remember it is an old movie and doesn't have the CGI of today's movies. I think a remake would be a good idea with today's technology... would be fun! The kids liked it!

Back in the 90s, when I was a kid, I was a huge Macaulay Culkin fan. Yes, I had an innocent crush on him, so it may be a biased opinion. However, I still find it to be a very cute movie. And the books are funny with their respective personalities. I'm excited to share it with my young nephew.

Childhood classic so it's great to have. Not many bonus features and that's why it's doesn't get the fifth star. I really would have loved to see some BTS footage/Making of Featurettes. If you want to see this classic and don't mind the bare news of its extras then it buy buy buy!
