    Synopsis

    The Prestige
Obsession, jealousy, and deceit define the tense relationship shared between two turn-of-the-century magicians in Memento and Batman Begins director Christopher Nolan's dizzying tale of sleight of hand. Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) are London-based magicians of the highest order, both blessed with spectacular powers of deception and both cursed with unrelenting envy for one another's skills. When Alfred performs an awe-inspiring trick for which there seems no logical explanation, the friendly competition shared between the pair turns to deadly rivalry as the enraged Rupert determines to uncover his rival's deepest secrets. In the world of illusion, however, nothing is ever quite as it seems, and the rules of the physical world simply don't apply. Now, as bitter competition quickly begins to consume the souls of both performers, the firestorm birthed by their anger threatens to consume all who surround them. Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, and David Bowie co-star in a feature that finds director/screenwriter Nolan reuniting with brother and Memento story author Jonathan Nolan to adapt author Christopher Priest's original novel. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The great thing about The Prestige is that the first time you watch the movie it completely messes with your mind. But what truly makes it a modern classic is that it’s highly re-watchable. There are so many layers to this movie but ultimately I feel it’s about obsession and how certain driven individuals place their pursuit of making history and claiming greatness over dedicating themselves to their family and the ones they love. And ultimately that comes at a very heavy cost. But if you do not want to get that deep with the film it’s a viscerally thrilling ride all the way through and nicely blends authentic magic with a touch of science fiction to further heighten the sense of being in a forbidden world where tragedy, magic, revenge, and obsession intersect. The 4K image is glorious in revealing richer colors and really fine details that the Blu-ray cannot match and the lossless sound definitely pulls you into the world of early 20th century London as well as Nikolai Teslas hidden laboratory in Colorado. Highly recommended for Nolan fans and those who enjoy mindbending, psychological dramas.

Nolan's gorgeous period-drama about two rival magicians makes a wonderful addition to the UHD home format. Like all of the Nolan 4K releases, this new transfer was created using the films original camera negative and supervised by Nolan and his director of photography. The film is complex with rich characters and a chilling climax. While not very successful upon its initial theatrical release, the film is beloved by all who stumble upon it now. The new 4K transfer looks beautiful and while some will complain about the lack of a new Atmos audio track, this decision was left to Nolan and I respect his choice to reuse the original 5.1 lossless from the bluray release. For a more in depth review of the transfer please follow the link below but all told this new release comes highly recommended by this reviewer. http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Prestige-4K-Bluray/193521/#Review

I've never read the book, but I do love the movie! The Prestige takes you on a journey full of twists and turns as you watch two rival magicians battle it out in an effort to outdo one another. Each cast member seems perfectly suited to their role- I cannot imagine better choices! The whole time you watch the movie, you cannot help but try to figure out the tricks- ESPECIALLY the big one that consumes our main character. Keep your eyes peeled as telltale signs DO pop up during the movie that all make perfect sense in the end, but good luck picking up enough of them to figure it out by the time its all over! One word: DEDICATION. The ending to this movie really makes you smack your forehead in realization, even if it is a bit on the creepy side- I don't think you'll see it coming! As with some movies, this one does suffer from a bit of slowdown at times, but thankfully it is not enough to sour the experience! At the very least, this movie is worth a rental, but I chose to OWN because I know I'll watch this one again from time to time!

Here's another one where I have been waiting a LONG TIME for to come to the 4K format, well only 2 years since the format is relatively brand new. Happy to see the 7-film Nolan 4K collection come home finally to the 4K UHD Blu-ray format. His movies are some of my all time favorites. This one is no exception either. I love the way Bale and Jackman play off each other here. And Scarlett is just the icing on the cake! This is an oldie in the Nolan catalog, but goodie. The audio and video throughout are reference, but dialog can be a bit low in the mix. Your results may vary. However, it's the same audio from the former Blu-ray release so no new Atmos or DTS:X tracks. The slip cover artwork on this one is mesmerizing and trippy. Love it!

"The Prestige" is that rare specimen of modern blockbuster filmmaking - the type of film that demands you revisit it again and again to fully unwind its tightly guarded secrets. Much like "The Sixth Sense" did several years earlier, Christopher Nolan's film keeps its secrets hidden in plain sight, and yet it's only on a second (or third) viewing that most people will be able to detect them. The less said about the plot, the better. Just know that the story has considerable thematic depth (passion, power, obsession, duality, identity, and revenge are all seamlessly woven into the fabric of the film) and is elevated by the performances of both Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman. The greatest achievement of "The Prestige" is that it ultimately functions as Nolan's own magic trick, perpetuated in front of an audience that views it and is left with the most wonderful question in all of film at the end: "How did he do that?"

I saw this movie when it first came out and waited longer than I should have to buy it. Christopher Nolan is in my top 3 favorite directors and he never disappoints. Each member of the cast was a perfect selection for his/her part and the rivalry between Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman is fascinating. The movie starts out with (in a sense) pieces of a puzzle because you are shown both present and future scenes and you know the are put together, but you don't know what leads to it and the suspense only builds higher and higher from there. The story is filled with deception, suspense, jealousy, hatred, and revenge. Two magicians battling to be the best and have taken many risks/chances to doing so. In the end, all is revealed and then you realize that this is an amazing movie and should be part of every collection.

I saw some previews of the Prestige on a few other movies I bought on Blu-ray and the movie looked intersting enough to watch. I had planned to rent the movie off of Netflix but found myself at Best Buy browsing their Blu-ray section and ended up buying it. The purchase is one I do not regret! This has got to be one of the best movies I have seen in a long time! The acting is phenomenal and the script is top notch. I found myself a bit confused in the begining of the movie because the story jumps from present to past to present and it was a bit hard to follow. Though once you understand the story and you reach the end your mind will be blown away. The ending is an eye opener! The movie does a good job of giving you clues to figure out the ending, and some people might even figure it out, but once you watch the ending you still can't help to feel surprised and amazed!

Following the passing of the iconic David Bowie, I found there was a film missing from my Bowie collection; this happens to be the it, and what a great find it is! Directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson and Bowie.........just this line up says must see! The story involves two rival magicians and a very tangled web of deceit, illusion, and showmanship building up to a must see conclusion. The adders are all great too, giving some insight into this powerful production. I'd overlooked this for nearly ten years.........DON'T make the same mistake, see this now for the first or tenth time, you won't be sorry!
