The Shack
After a loving father (Sam Worthington) endures a family tragedy that rocks him to his core, he receives a mysterious invitation to "The Shack," a decrepit shelter where an unimaginable horror once took place. But, much to his surprise, his visit prompts a divine intervention from a series of strangers (Octavia Spencer, Graham Greene, Avraham Aviv Alush, and Sumire Matsubara), and the group soon lead him on a theological inquiry in the hope of getting him unstuck from his grief by reminding him of the all-encompassing love of God. I have been a self identified Agnostic for a number of years for various reasons. I was drawn to this movie because of it's cast, in particular Octavia Spencer. I found The Shack very touching and thought provoking. It brought you along for the emotional ride with the father/main character as he experiences the deeply emotional life event that makes him ask the questions he does, in the way he does. It is a similar, but not nearly as traumatic event that affected me, so the theme of the movie had a particular interest to me. I found, even myself, after so many years, being opened and touched by the resolving premise and strongly recommend the movie as a very good viewing experience and a healing experience.

The Shack is not just one of the best faith-based movies that I've seen. It's one of the best ... period. Of course, the story line from the book is outstanding. It offers a fascinating insight into who God is. Some don't like it because the picture of God it presents is very unconventional, but I believe this really taps into the real nature of God ... which is far beyond our ability to fully understand. God transcends us, and The Shack paints a vivid portrait of this. But it also gives a truly amazing picture of God's grace toward people, especially those who may seem to be unlikely or unworthy. And then it provides an unforgettable climax showing the transforming power of forgiveness. All this is done with a disarming warmth and a great sense of humor. The Shack is a truly great film.

Once in a while a movie comes along that best illustrates the heart of God. It closely follows the book that its based on, and fleshes the books characters. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are portrayed wonderfully in a way never portrayed in any other film. Sam Worthington plays Mackenzie Allen Philips who's early life and subsequent loss of his daughter, Missy, lead him to have heavy doubt about God, His existence, and if His love is reall. Sam gives a powerful performance, one of his best. Octavia Spenser gives one of her most personal performances as God; as does Graham Green. You must see this film! Its one of the best! I also suggest Risen, Heaven Can Real, Hacksaw Ridge, and Unbroken.

This movie really helps to open one's eyes to the many different types of ways that God shows us his love and gives us the free will to actually love ourselves and our loved ones that surround us. It shows us that whether we are asking for the forgiveness of another or if we're actually doing the forgiving to be set free from the pain, that forgiveness and God's love for us will bring happiness and peace to our lives when those things feel unattainable for us to achieve. This movie sheds much light on so many different questions that we face as human beings and opens up the mind to hope and forward progress. I really enjoyed all of it thoroughly.

If God is so good, than why is there so much evil in the world? Everyone has asked God this and other questions just like it. What if you could spend the weekend with God and ask him any of these questions that you wanted? ...and get answers! That is what this movie is built on. Anyone can see this movie, and everyone should! This movie will run you through all of your emotions. Put your heart through the wringer, answer a lot of questions, leave you with a few more, and is one of the few that makes you think about these relevant issues well after the movie is over. Simply the best movie, ever! P.S. ...and the book is even better.

"The Shack" tells a moving story about a man learning to find healing by discovering new ways to relate to God. While it is a meaningful book, it's not "great literature" (nor does it try to be). So the movie adaptation could have been a disaster, but it's actually quite lovely. All the actors bring the right blend of sincerity and gentleness to the role, and the story is presented in a way that is meaningful and thought-provoking. This is a faith-based movie and is not likely to win any converts, but again, that's not its purpose. It's meant to give people of faith something to think about, and it does that well, and beautifully.

I read the book and marvelled at Young's portrayal of God. Each part of the Trinity has a separate and vital personality. It makes God personal and divine at the same time. Most film adaptations don't meet the mark of the book, but this one does. It masterfully captures the relationship developing between the main character, Mack, and these unique aspects of God, each helping him to heal past a tragedy in a special way. It is spirituality with subtlety.
