    Synopsis

    The Sting
Four years after setting box offices ablaze in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, and director George Roy Hill re-teamed with similar success for The Sting. Redford plays Depression-era confidence trickster Johnny Hooker, whose friend and mentor Luther Coleman (Robert Earl Jones) is murdered by racketeer/gambler Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Hoping to avenge Luther's death, Johnny begins planning a "sting" -- an elaborate scam -- to destroy Lonnegan. He enlists the aid of "the greatest con artist of them all," Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman), who pulls himself out of a drunken stupor and rises to the occasion. Hooker and Gondorff gather together an impressive array of con men, all of whom despise Lonnegan and wish to settle accounts on behalf of Luther. The twists and surprises that follow are too complex to relate in detail -- suffice to say that you can't cheat an honest man, and that you shouldn't accept everything at face value. The Sting became one of the biggest hits of the early '70s; grossing 68.5 million dollars during its first run, the film also picked up seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Adapted Score for Marvin Hamlisch's unforgettable setting of Scott Joplin's ragtime music. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Sting is a film of intelligence and incredible charm. Every detail of the production, from its costumes to its music, appear to have been handled with great enthusiasm. Many films and television shows since have attempted to lift the film's architecture and memorable character ticks, but, throughout its smile-inducing runtime, there's no doubt that The Sting remains one of a kind. This Blu-ray release contains a nice retrospective and a solid audio-visual presentation of the film. As with previous releases on DVD and HD DVD, picture quality lacks the sharp, slick appearance of The Sting's modern-day caper contemporaries, but the hazy nostalgia of its 1930s atmosphere (or 1970s filmmaking) minimizes any resulting disappointment. The Sting on Blu-ray is a top-notch film faithfully conveyed and a sure bet for any collection.

I’m collecting all the best picture winners and this is one of them. 1973 it went up against American Graffiti, Cries and Whispers, The Exorcist, and A touch of class. While I have not seen A touch of class or Cries and Whispers. Of the three I have seen I prefer American Graffiti and the Exorcist to The Sting. That being said it is a good movie and well worth having in your collection.

Simply put, this is the best movie I've ever seen. Sorry Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, etc.; but this is the best feature film I've seen in 30+ years of viewing. If you haven't seen this film, you need to. It is excellent. A dynamite cast and a great screenplay beats special effects anytime. WARNING: There are no massive car chases, wild love scenes, huge gunfights, or explosions that require surround sound. You merely get two of America's greatest living actors in a film that won multiple Academy Awards.

The Blu-ray provided excellent picture and sound quality. This movie is one of the most entertaining ever made. Paul Newman and Robert Redford are at their best and Robert Shaw is a great villain. The movie has lots of action and twists and turns in the plot. Buy it and Watch it.

1973 was a great yea for The Sting. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were at it again since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. And who can ever forget the Role of Robert Shaw ... Just Golden!

It was a great price with a minor complication. The digital copy code was already reported as used. I contacted Universal and the problem was resolved in a few days. Great movie!

A classic Caper movie, the BluRay lifts the music from the soundtrack in places but other than that no major changes. A movie made by an Oscar winner. Can't go wrong.
