Doug Liman (director of The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow) shapes a script by Dwain Worrell into an unconventional war film that is basically once solider against another. Set against the backdrop of the Iraq War circa 2007, The Wall, focuses on two expert snipers from both sides and takes you deep into the psychology of what it means to be pinned down with no where left to turn but wit, limited resources, training, and survival instincts, The movie is well acted all around and Aaron-Taylor Johnson gives a raw physical portrayal of an American solider stuck in the desert heat and in the line of fire. Even though the film is light on big action sequences The Wall has a ticking clock urgency that keeps you on the edge of your seat and is given first class treatment by a first class director who knows how to push the action/thriller genre and surprise you while keeping you invested in the characters. Shot on 16mm film the Blu Ray looks fantastic and preserves the sun scorched, desert feel while maintaining sharp details while the lossless DTS-HD soundtrack delivers precise dialogue which is key along with well placed and occasionally hard hitting sound effects. Highly recommended for Doug Liman fans and thriller enthusiasts looking for something different.

I guess this was intended to be a psychological thriller. It involves a US soldier in Iraq who gets pinned down for several hours behind a wall by an Iraqi sniper whose shooting accuracy would put Annie Oakley to shame (we are told he is shooting from 1500 meters, which is almost a mile). In quick succession, the sniper wounds Aaron Taylor-Johnson below the knee (a wound that we are told might be life-threatening), puts a hole in his canteen (threatening Taylor-Johsnon with death by dehydration) and shoots the antenna off of his radio (thereby making it impossible for him to seek help). The film was so slow it felt like watching paint dry, except that drying paint would not be nearly as whiny as Taylor-Johnson. The film also leaves unexplained why the wall that we are told was part of a demolished school, and a garbage heap that we are told that the sniper is hiding in, both seem to be set out in the middle of nowhere, begging the question (why are they there?). Finally, the ending was obvious from 1500 meters. Overall, a pretty poor effort by the director of Edge of Tomorrow (which I loved).

Late in 2007, on the day after the 2nd Iraqi War Armistice is signed, an Army Scout/ Sniper Team loses patience and comes out of their “hide” to “early” and into the crosshairs of an Iraqi Sniper nicknamed “Juda” – “the Ghost” credited with 35 American KIA. Now it turns into a battle of wits and cunning. This is an action saga of two characters, one location and one “voice” – that of the Iraqi sniper. There’s enough “hide-and-seek” and realist-action to hold the audience’s attention – a very satisfactory view

After watching this movie (Blue-ray) I threw it away. It did not honor our military; but rather made them out to be undisciplined and unprepared. That's not how a scout sniper is trained to act. This movie made the enemy to appear superior and disciplined as he "played" with our fighting men. I was repulsed by this movie. Then I learned the author wrote this while on an extended stay in The Peoples Republic of China.

This is one of those purchases where my wife and I got sucked into the trailer that we saw while watching another movie earlier this year. The premise of this movie is somewhat believable but it is much more of a psychological battle more than anything else. I don't usually watch movies that have that many f-bombs in it but giving the milieu that the movie was set in, this was somewhat acceptable. I would not re-watch this movie and that is my own personal benchmark of how I rate my movies.

So, if you like realistic movies, this one is the one to have. If you like, lets beat the life out of everything.... this is not by a long shot. I boils down to your expectation. This war movie is devoted of action. the random sniper shot here and there does not amount to serious blood spillage, but if you really want an idea of what it was like. this is it. if you are looking for non stop action...bring a blanket and a good pillow cause you will fall asleep.

I like films that limit its characters to a small area and/or space of time. "The Wall" does a good job with both facets and is definitely worth a look. The subject matter itself is less gripping for me, but war and action fans should enjoy this one.

All I had seen was a couple trailers when I purchased it and I was not disappointed. For a military movie there was not all the blood and guts action & a small cast of actors but, the drama, suspense and story line more then carried it.
