The Waterboy [DVD] [1998]

Adam Sandler's gridiron comedy The Waterboy comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. A closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Stereo. There are no subtitles on this release. Supplemental materials are limited to a pedestrian production featurette and a theatrical trailer. Fans of Sandler's comedic style will be thrilled with this disc, but there is nothing compelling about it for anyone else.

    Synopsis

    The Waterboy
As with his previous films, comedian Adam Sandler and writing partner Tim Herlihy have conceived a simple premise, character, and title, and peppered their creation with visual sight gags. The story concerns Bobby Boucher, a Louisiana-born-and-bred kid living in the swamps with his overbearing, alligator-eating mom (Kathy Bates). Bobby is a water boy for the local college football team, and a damn good one, even good at turning a deaf ear at the ridicule he gets from the players and coach (Jerry Reed). But when Bobby is fired from his job, he is forced to continue his water management skills at the rival college, a losing team with a washed-up coach (Happy Days' "The Fonz," Henry Winkler). It's here that the coach teaches Bobby to channel his anger, and he makes a surprising discovery. The water boy can tackle like no one he's ever seen. Forced to keep his football talents from his mom, Bobby soon joins the college as a student and learns that there's more to life than alligator stew. He even falls for a perky ex-con (Fairuza Balk) who teaches Bobby about the birds and the bees. As Bobby leads his team toward victory, they get an invitation to play in the annual Bourbon bowl against his old college rivals. Bobby must choose between the love of his ailing mother and the glory of the final game -- or maybe there's a way he can get both. ~ Arthur Borman, Rovi

Ok when I watch films I do so on a 180" movie theater screen with full 7.1 surround sound and the Buttkicker transducer system. This is not to Bragg but to give an idea of the clarity that I rate both 4k and 1080p films. 1st off regardless if you are huge into 4k or still collect Blu-ray; I will add that with today's (Oppo) upscaling technology along with upscaling technology on theater projectors that the difference between Blu-ray & 4k is minimal. I will say that going over 180" that you will likely see a difference and recommend 4k for 150"+ screens. I found the film to be Fruterating when it came to the picture quality. It was grainy especially at first, then once you got used to it..... This is a film I'll be happy to purchase when 4K UHD releases! As to the film itself. I consider some slap stick comedy to be annoying. Those over the top goofy films. This film doesn't have that film and in a way pay tribute to prior Adam Sandler Films. I'd like to see Sandler films take a better approach and lean more toward Something like Caddyshack. Happy Gilmore was close but again seeemed to lack any serious side. Maybe that's why "The Wedding Singer" was one of his best? I still love the film, its a classic! The sound is Blah, the Picture is Blah.. Its just a cheaply encoded Blu-ray.. SAD!

The Waterboy is a 1998 American sports comedy film directed by Frank Coraci (who played Robert 'Roberto' Boucher, Sr.), starring Adam Sandler, Kathy Bates, Fairuza Balk, Henry Winkler, Jerry Reed (his last film role before his death in 2008), Larry Gilliard, Jr., Blake Clark, Peter Dante and Jonathan Loughran, and produced by Robert Simonds and Jack Giarraputo. The movie is about a water boy, for a college football team, discovers he has a unique tackling ability and becomes a member of the team.

Upon leaving on a visit to Best Buy, I searched throuygh one of their dvd/blu-ray bins located toward the front of the store, close to the checkout counters. I found this Adam Sandler classic, one which I have been looking for on blu-ray for quite some time. I am extremely satisfied with the movie and the price!

      Not Sandler's Best, But Enjoyable

'Waterboy' is just another typical Adam Sandler movie with him playing the same type of character audiences love to see him as. Not his best film, but still loaded with some really funny material, this one is at least worth one viewing. The dvd itelf, featuring a shoddy letterbox widescreen transfer, could have been much better.

I had not added any adam sandler movies to my collection before , but I am glad I added this one. It is hillarious and fun to watch. This was one of his first I think ,but his comedic talent shines thru. The supporting actors are also great. Don't miss this one for your collections.

For me this is the last in line of good Adam Sandler comedies. There have been a few decent since but nothing that compares to that run he had first starting with Billy Madison. This one is not even close to his best but definitely worth a watch.

This movie is nostalgia for me. I haven't watched it for years up until a month ago, and the jokes still stick. Slapstick as its finest. one of Adam Sandler's better comedy films. If you enjoy the older Adam Sandler films then I would reccommend you get this movie

Bobby Boucher wants nothing more than to quench the thirst of dehydrated athletes. But when Bobby gets the chance to play, he is transformed from a meek "water distribution engineer" into the hardest hitter ever to roam the gridiron!
