A: "No contract" means exactly that. You are not bound to have service and you can start or discontinue and restart at any time. You will need to buy airtime or a monthly service plan to connect to the network, otherwise the phone (if it is a smartphone) can only be used for Emergency 911 and can connect to WiFi and become a glorified (albeit much cheaper) iPod.
