Synopsis

Varsity Blues
In his first feature following the success of television's Dawson's Creek, James Van Der Beek stars as Jonathan Moxon, the back-up quarterback on his high-school football team, the West Canaan Coyotes. In West Canaan, the only thing that matters is football, and the man who matters is the one with 22 divisional championships, coach Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight). Mox, as the young "A" student is called, is wrapping up his senior year on his way to Brown University in the shadow of his childhood friend, star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker). With only five games until the end of the season, Kilmer pushes his players too hard, and Lance suffers a career-ending injury, forcing Mox to play and win the game. Now the starter, Mox must deal with his newfound celebrity; the attentions of Lance's girlfriend, head-cheerleader Darcy (Ali Larter); prevent his friends and fellow players Billy Bob (Ron Lester) and Tweeder (Scott Caan) from self-destructing; prevent Coach Kilmer from crushing everybody; and hold on to his own girlfriend, Lance's sister Jules (Amy Smart). Oh, and Mox must also win the championship and prove himself the hero. ~ Ron Wells, Rovi

In small-town Texas, high school football is a religion. The head coach is deified, as long as the team is winning and 17-year-old schoolboys carry the hopes of an entire community onto the gridiron every Friday night. In his 35th year as head coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight) is trying to lead his West Canaan Coyotes to their 23rd division title. When star quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) suffers an injury, the Coyotes are forced to regroup under the questionable leadership of John Moxon (James Van Der Beek), a second-string quarterback with a slightly irreverent approach to the game. "Varsity Blues" explores our obsession with sports and how teenage athletes respond to the extraordinary pressures places on them. -- IMDb Plot: Varsity Blues (1999)

My guilty pleasure are teen themed films but not all of them are great for repeat viewings. I spent many years avoiding this particular film even after it had been parodied by Not another Teen Movie.I saw it on television a few months ago and really enjoyed the story and all the young up and comers that were in this movie. I bought the blu ray for a very good price and have now seen it several times and I am happy to report it is part of my collection

Great movie at a great price from Best Buy. Varsity Blues is one of those movies that stands the test of time. It's just as good years later as it was when it first came out. It doesn't take itself too seriously and is a lot of fun without needing strong dramatic performances. Blu Ray version is great quality. Extra's are OK.

This is a reasonably entertaining movie in the vein of Friday Night Lights (TV show). Fictional W TX town obsessed with football, wacky players, but with a win at all costs coach (Jon Voight). It also features a pre-F&F Paul Walker and pre-heroes/Resident Evil Ali Larter.

'Varsity Blues' is a gem of a film, that I actually ended up seeing as the result of a mishap regarding start times of showings at the local theater. Superbly cast and directed, this movie is sure to please, and one you can watch repeatedly at that. Widescreen, highly recommended!

If you go into this movie expecting so see the greatest movie ever you'll be disappointed. However if you're looking for a entertaining movie with realistic football action and plausible off the field action then you'll enjoy the movie.

Great movie with a better picture in Blu Ray. I have purchased several movies in blu ray, which I already had on regular DVD and this movie has a lot more footage and more clarity just as the other blu ray dvd's I have purchased.
