Vertigo 4K SteelBook
||Posted . Owned for 11 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. Not my favorite Hitchcock film, but I love the design on the SteelBook. The orange case pops against the rest of my collection, and the artwork is really unique. The 4K transfer looks great too. If you’re a fan of Hitchcock’s films and are looking to transfer to 4K, this is a solid addition.

Vertistop!
||Posted . Owned for 7 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off, let me say that VERTIGO is my favorite movie of all-time. It is also one of the most beautifully-shot Technicolor pics ever filmed. But you wouldn't know it from this very disappointing 4K Steelbook (I was SO anxiously awaiting this one!). With its meticulous restoration and it being a VistaVision movie, this should have been a no-brainer. I've seen literally dozens of prints, laserdiscs, DVDs, and Blu-rays, and, while this not the worst -- it certainly leaves much to desired (the best home vid version I've ever seen is the now out-of-print Black Barons Steelbook from Film Arena). While the clarity is there, in both picture and sound, the colors are wayyy too over-saturated. With their (Universal) SPARTACUS 4K looking so fantastic, I held high (definition) hopes for this Hitchcock masterpiece. Fingers crossed that they re-do it. I've included two shots from the aforementioned Film Arena edition in contrast to a pair of images from this 4K. Universal, do better.

MUST OWN !!
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Film buffs can argue about whether Vertigo ranks as Alfred Hitchcock's finest film, but everyone will agree this haunting study of obsession, transformation, and betrayal is the crown jewel in Universal's Alfred Hitchcock Classics Collection. Eye candy can't begin to describe the breathtakingly beautiful 4K UHD HDR10 presentation that immerses us in the intrigue that engulfs a retired San Francisco police detective when an old college buddy asks him to tail his mentally disturbed wife. James Stewart and Kim Novak ignite the screen, but Hitchcock is the true star of this elegant thriller that celebrates the director's ingenuity and artistry. The new DTS:X track supplies potent audio and all the extras from previous Blu-rays have been ported over to this release. Vertigo is an enduring masterpiece, and though you may have seen it before, you've never seen it like this. Must Own.

Well Done, As Expected.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Compared to today’s movies, Vertigo is a masterpiece. Compared to most of Hitchcock’s efforts, its somewhat middling. Of the four films that have been scanned and released on 4K blu ray, it ranks third for me behind Psycho and Rear Window. It is better than the Birds in my opinion. I’ve watched this movie many times over and enjoyed it more each time. The acting in Vertigo is fantastic. The movie is more of a mystery than a thriller, and if you’re smart you will figure out what’s going on before the end. As far as video quality, it’s great. Grain is retained and it looks glorious. No digital magic to remove the evidence of the 35/70mm film. Aspect ratio is 1.85:1 so if you have a typical lcd or oled panel it will be full screen. Detail levels are amazing, it looks like it could have been filmed yesterday. Especially close ups, The fine grain holds detail that we couldn’t see on developing digital displays for years. HDR serves its purpose in well-lit scenes but there are some dusk or twilight scenes that seem too dark, almost dull. This may be the intent, I’m not sure. Blacks look perfect to me but this will depend on your TV. Some softer scenes as expected, and it doesn’t pop as much as rear window, which is a lighter film in tone and scenery to begin with. I can’t really speak for the audio as I don’t have a sound system, just a soundbar. I do appreciate the 2.0 soundtrack and it seems to be mixed well. Music blares on purpose during dramatic scenes as if the audience won’t understand the scene without the score. Overall it’s worth purchasing as you may end up watching many times. Definitely a requirement if you are building any kind of movie collection.

Possibly the Greatest Catalog 4K Transfer
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. If you can get your hands on this steelbook, do it, as there are few movie posters more iconic than that of Vertigo. Even if you aren't able to get this version specifically, you're in for a treat with the disc itself. In terms of the 4k transfer, there may not be any I've seen as good as this for the time period, and maybe for any catalog release. The audio has been upgraded to DTS:X, as well, making for a more robust listening experience. A must-have in any packaging.
