Great once you figure out how to reformat for Mac

I spent hours struggling trying to get the Mac Disk Utility to reformat this drive. No success. Neither were trips to Geek Squad successful. Finally, I called WD support; within 5 minutes, the drive was reformatted. NOWHERE online did I find this essential information - to view ALL devices (in Disk Utility) -- and then to do the reformat/erase on the drive that appears ABOVE your external drive. You can only view that by using the Disk Utility Menu controls in the upper left of your screen (in step #3 below). Here's the sequence: 1. Connect external drive 2. Click Initialize… (if it says this drive cannot be read by this Mac) 3. From Disk Utility menu (in upper left of screen), choose View > All Devices 4. Then choose the "Easystore" device listed one level above the disk2s1 (or whatever name appears for your WD external drive) 5. Click Erase (top middle choice of Disk Utility window) 6. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) to use drive ONLY with Macs - and/or if you want to use this drive for Time Machine. (Note: If you are not using drive for Time Machine, and want files to be readable on Windows machines, too, choose exFAT format.) 7. Select GUID partition That's it! SUCCESS at last!

Do NOT trust this hard drive! BROKEN after one use

I bought this hard drive to help me backup a bunch of files off of my main computer to free up some space... Did one transfer of a few folders (about 10 GB worth), no problems... Then I attempted to transfer the entirety of my old external drive onto this one (nearly 1 GB of files)... The transfer started okay... but before long, it said "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error" ... I skipped that message, and then it aborted the transfer altogether. When I checked the drive to see what had transferred... only a few 1 kb files had successfully been written... BUT what is even worse: (a) I can no longer access the files that WERE successfully written to this "easystore" drive (I was just about to delete them from my recycle bin... good thing I hadn't done that yet!!) (b) I can't even erase or format the drive. It is literally broken. It appears that, after a SINGLE use, the drive actually FAILED (irrevocably) on the second attempt to even use it. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, or be prepared to pay the price when you suddenly lose all of your information stored on it...

Great product, makes for a lot more space for when I want to purchase and download new games, apps, movies or music. This configures easily with Xbox One, with a single click of the controller, it programs it just for your Xbox, never seen it so easy. HOWEVER, there is one downside to this whole thing and that's an issue with converting files from my internal HDD to this external. I transfer my files to the external but you are UNABLE TO DELETE the files stored on the internal HDD. So, you're stuck with two sets of files and of course, that makes no sense. Additionally, if a file is installed on your internal HDD (say a Call of Duty game) that requires an update too large in size for the remaining capacity of your internal drive, you will be unable to download the game to the external drive as for some unknown reason, the console has a hard time detecting there is available storage externally that the data can be stored. So, why not transfer the game from internal to external? You can't.. unless you want two files of the same game. It's a really poor setup. WD gave me the runaround and so, I would really only recommend this product if you're willing to put up with a slight headache. I got this bad boy for 50% off on a deal ran by Best Buy so bring me the Ibuprofen, I'll be alright.

After having a "My Passport" that I wanted to back up two laptops I bought 2 Easystore drives. I have problems with moving the My Passport from each computer. Hard to tell which computer if any was being backed up. The way the files are stored it is hard to name the files per computer because the date seems to be a different date. Anyway, by buying 2 Easystore that would be a separate storage per each computer, I hoped to not have the concern of what backup for what computer. That now seems to by file but I still don't care for the name of the file on each backup. So I rename each backup and hope I have the right file. It was not as easy to set up as they make you believe. Also, another problem I have is with the Easystore plugged in my phone back up will not work. I have to up plug the Eaststore to get the computer to see my phone when plugged in. So I think all now is well but will file out when I really need the back up. That is why I changed backup drive companies because with another company with I needed the back up the backup drive was bad.

I know almost nothing about computers or computer accessories. I purchased this device because I needed more storage space for my PS4 that only has 500GB of internal storage. My son and I were constantly deleting games to make room for others. I finally gave in and decided to purchase an external USB to alleviate that frustration. My reason for purchasing this specific device was size (2GB) which I didn't see us filling up, and price (on sale for $69.99 from $129.99). I've hOnly had it for one week, but I can say that I am totally happy I made the decision to expand my PS4 storage. I have space galore for all my games and they load fast and without issue. I would recommend this device to anyone with similar needs. I'm picking up the Xbox One X on November 7th, and while it has a bigger internal hard drive than my PS4 I fully plan on getting an external USB for it, too. This WD drive will be perfect.

best buy wants an immediate review and i suppose getting data onto the drive has been what one would expect. the real test is in how the drive performs over time - especially as there become more overwrites and limited free space. all of my wd drives have been internal drives and they have all held up pretty well. this is my first 2TB external and it is not quite a speedy as my external seagates but they are 1TB drives so i imagine that to be the major factor. but that is by no means a complaint, just a comparison that may be more apples to oranges than winesaps to granny smiths. at any rate, though i did so because of a requirement to end this post, i honestly could no more recommend than dissuade a purchase at this point. it's storing music files (hd wav & flac) and i have no complaints about playback performance even when playlists are culled from various albums that i assume to be scattered all over the drive. a better test might be to run films or video games but that is not why i bought the unit. if i lose a treasured album, then i'll be back with one heck of a review! otherwise, it's fine for my needs.

I bought this several weeks ago, but just started using it a few days ago. I'm using it to back up some critical files. Right out of the box, only needed to plug in, and after a brief download of driver which starts automatically, I was able to begin copying files. Process was very speedy and simple with copy/paste or drag and drop functionality. I love the compact, sleek design. After copying the files, I put it back in the original packaging for extra protection, but it sits very nicely on desk or PC tower without getting in the way if you want to use for continuous backup. I returned a Seagate drive to another store before using it (I read the reviews after purchase instead of before). Reviews on this drive were almost universally positive and Best Buy associate vouched for its quality and durability, so as long as the drive continues to peform for at least a few years, I'll be satisfied. I do have two other WD drives, both a larger tower and an old passport that I've had for years and they continue to work very well as extra and duplicate storage and PC backups.

I've been kicking myself for not getting a backup drive for years. But then I had a big scare with my laptop. It crashed and I thought it was toast. Well, we revived it and I decided, okay, I really really need to back up my files. The price point was perfect on this drive. I've never used a back up drive before and I'm generally hands off with technology. This little drive was extremely easy to install and set up for a regular back up program. Much to my surprise the process didn't take hours, the whole thing was up and running and backed up my laptop in about a half an hour. I'm sure the time will vary depending on how many files you have, but for me this was an invaluable experience. I now have peace of mind that if something happens to my laptop, all of my hard work is saved to this tiny little device. I can't believe how small, but mighty this thing is. I absolutely will buy another as soon as I run out of space on this one.
