Not using the recommended detergent can lead to additional rinse cycles and increased water usage.)
    • Steam Function: false (In washers, this feature may be employed before, during, or after the main wash cycle. Steam aids in stain removal, activating detergent, sanitizing, and softening wrinkles. In dryers, this feature can be used to remove wrinkles or quickly freshen clothing items.)
    • Washing Mechanism: Agitator (There are two washing mechanisms to choose from in today's washing machines: agitators or impellers. An agitator is a column located in the center of the washing tub. It may be finned or vaned, and works to clean clothes by rotating and rubbing against clothes to break down stains. An impeller is a low-profile cone at the bottom of the tub that uses fins, cones, or discs to create motion. This motion pushes clothes to rub against each other, versus against an agitator, to break down dirt.)
    • Agitator Type: Dual-action (A single-action agitator typically rotates one way to circulate clothes throughout the washer. A dual-action agitator has two parts that rotate differently; the top rotates to push clothes down toward the bottom of the tub while the bottom continues to move clothes in a circular motion. Triple-action agitators work similarly, but add a third up-and-down motion to the dual rotation.)

Q: Does this washer actually fill up with water?

A: No, this washer does not "FILL" with water....even if you use the deep fill option. The fullest it ever gets is about 3/4 the way up the tub. I have tested it on each setting and it will not fill higher than that. I still recommend the washer. I had to get use to the idea of not putting more clothes in it than it can handle, but once I did, I love it!!! I had a front loader before this and I hated it. My clothes never smelled clean. I have a teenage boy and I could still smell him when I opened the front door. As long as I do not over fill this washer with clothes, everything smells very clean when done. I am guessing the people that say it "FILLS" have never opened it to realize that "FILLING" means only 3/4 full and not anywhere near the top.

Q: Do the clothes come out twisted into ropes? Especially sheets and jeans.

A: Large HE Maytag, a load of long sleeved shirts, sorted properly will come out tied in knots and in long ropes. I hate the new machines. Sometimes have to rinse twice even using proper soap pods. The old type machines need to be manufactured again!

Q: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE SPEED WASH CYCLE? I SEE THIS IS NOT THE QUIETEST MACHINE BUT MOST REVIEWS ARE GOOD BUT THE PROBLEM I HAVE WITH THE QUIETER MACHINES THAT I'VE FOUND IS THAT THEY ALL TAKE FOREVER TO RUN A WASH CYCLE, ALL OVER 30 MINUTES.

A: Hi ROB- The approximate cycle time with no options selected for Speed cycle is 23 minutes. With a dual-action agitator and Deep Fill water level option, the traditional top-load washer lets you do laundry your way - even if it's the old school way! See the following link: http://www.geappliances.com/ge/washer/traditional-top-load-washing-machine.htm - Check out the matching electric dryer- GTD42EASJWW (Gas GTD42GASJWW). Thanks for considering GE! SUEatGEA

Q: Does this machine have an agitator?

A: It has a vibration agitator, works great and your clothes don't get all tangled!!

Q: I don’t see that this machine is rated as a High Efficient machine. Can I use regular detergent?

A: Hello, This is Lisa from GE Appliances. We suggest using HE detergent. If you decide to use regular detergent, you will want to use less than normal. thank you for checking with us.

Q: Can you wash a queen-sized comforter in this washing machine?

A: Yes. It has a setting for "Bulky items" and towels. I was able to wash a queen size comforter with ease.

Q: Clothing wear

A: I've had mine for about 2 months. I wash ALL my clothing, including delicates, in it. I DO use a lingere bag for my most delicate items. I have not had a single problem so far. (I have not tried it on any sweaters yet.) Hope this helps!

Q: Direct Drive or belt?

A: Hi mamaheel- This is Sue at GE Appliances. We are excited to hear of your interest in our Top Load Washers! GTW460ASJWW features a belt and pulley driven system. Thanks for checking with us!
