Bought this for PC to be used by our 9 year old son. He is (like all his classmates) hooked on Minecraft. We had problems with this on our laptop and had to uninstall and reinstall a couple times. Our computer had recommended requirements, but just at the minimum. We found customer service to be slow to respond and had to write a couple times on one occasion to get a response. We also found that there is a lot of virus and malware vulnerability from associated sites (skins and mods) so you need to be extra careful.

Wandered aimlessly, found a mountain, dug into it, found floating water. 10/10 Built a holy shrine to the magnificent endlessly flowing floating water. 11/10

Hopefully this clears up some confusion parents may have. So I purchased a download card from Best buy, all it is, is a card with a code. You take this card, scratch off to reveal your code. On the Mojang site, the maker of the game, you enter the number there to download the actual game. I could've also paid with a credit card at their website, but this allowed me to get a few best buy points and use up a gift card I had sitting around. Once you download the application, you have to setup a name and register it with an email address. Once you do this, you can always re-download later to a different PC or Mac without having to buy it again or enter in the code in the card. You can toss the card. If you had purchased the iPad version of this game, the world you've setup there won't be in your desktop version. The feature that the desktop version has is that it allows you to play on Minecraft servers with others, (friends and strangers). Whereas the iPad version, you can only play with others on the same wifi network. This is about all I know about this game. It seems to spur creativity with my kids as the design and build things. To me, the game looks very pixelated, sort of like playing breakout from the 1980's!
