A: According to the manual the NR 7100 has 3 zones. I think they're both powered, with an additional pre-amp out for Zone 2. Check the manual to see if it does what you want. I have deck and living room speakers that I want to mostly adjust volume independently ( like for a party ) or source independently from my iphone - I think it'll do it with certain combinations of inputs.
A: Hello You can use regular speakers as long as they are compatible with the wattage and the impedance that the receiver supports. The TXNR7100 is rated with an 8ohm load with 100 watts per channel. Thank you Onkyo

My experience with the NR 7100 is not good. The unit has major HDMI switching issues that need to be addressed quickly. When changing from DVD back to cable TV, the video plays but the sound disappears. And I don't get the sound back unless I rurn the TV off and on - and even then there's an ubcomfortable delat. The fact is whenever I turn the NR7100 on I have no idea whether it will work or not. The bluetooth digital display remains fixed on the first song I play even when I change songs. The music changes, but the display stays fixed on the first song. Watching TV apps, like Netflix or Amazon is iffy. Video works, but sound gets lost or plays thru the TV speakers which can't find an external audio system AKA, the NR7100. HUH? Oh boy. And as for the calibration system, the famed Dirac Live, you can't download from Dirac, but must use the scaled down Onkyo licensed versions. And good luck trying to figure out the microphone placement for full, nine position calibration. Who drew that confusing diagram? I downloaded the full 191 page manual, which lacks commonsene explanations for setting up basic functions. I'm not an engineer and I doubt most buyers are either. One hundred and ninety-one pages? It's new and I still have a few days to decide if I want to keep this unit. I really do want to keep it, but for $1,100,00 I don't know if "hoping" for the best makes sense, when Marantz is right around the cirner. Fair warning. Problems, problems, problems. My assessment? This receiver is not quite ready for prime time. When it finds its way, the sound is good. The set up screens are pretty easy to navigate and the customer service is quite good. But in truth, having called rwice, even the reps seemed a little baffled that things weren't working as they shoukd. Look AV receivers should be intuitive and ready to identify and switch HDMI inputs, which the NR7100 isn't ready to do.

I recently bought this Onkyo receiver And I got to tell you all this is the greatest receivers I’ve ever owned!!! My biggest recommendation is to mate this receiver with some Klipsch Dolby Atmos speakers and you’re really get some great sound!!! In fact you can choose in the settings menu that your brand of speakers is Klipsch. And if you get Jurassic World Dominion on 4K Blu-ray, that movie has DTS X Instead of Dolby Atmos with a Klipsch Subwoofer, oh my God now you will have a mini theater in your house!!! I have two Klipsch 12” powered subwoofers with this receiver.I really recommend this receiver to anybody who is a fan of theater surround sound. The only drawback that I could say is if you are coming off of a Onkyo TX-NR777 this receiver is not as loud as that one. Where the 777 is on volume at 30 on the 7100 you’ll need to put it to 40. But other than that this is a really great receiver!!!
