The Pre-1 is an affordable stereo preamplifier that handles the signal conditioning tasks a power amplifier alone cannot. It accepts phono, microphone, tape, tuner, CD/DVD and auxiliary sources, matching each to the appropriate sensitivity and impedance: 3mV at 47k ohms for phono, 0.5V at 600 ohms for microphone and 150mV at 47k ohms for line sources. A phono stage with proper gain and loading means a turntable connects directly without a separate phono preamp. The microphone input boosts low-level mic output to a usable recording level, which produces a cleaner signal than plugging a microphone straight into a computer. Tone controls offer plus or minus 12dB of bass at 100Hz, plus or minus 6dB of midrange at 1kHz and plus or minus 12dB of treble at 10kHz, with a loudness contour for low-volume listening. Frequency response spans 5Hz to 30kHz. Tape record and preamp outputs feed a recorder and a power amplifier simultaneously. Dual voltage AC 120V/60Hz or 220V/50Hz operation.
A dedicated phono input rated at 3mV into 47k ohms provides the gain and loading a moving-magnet cartridge requires, so a turntable connects directly without a separate phono preamp. Phono signal-to-noise measures above 70dB with total harmonic distortion under 0.4 percent.
A 0.5V/600-ohm microphone input boosts the weak output of a microphone to a usable recording level. Running a mic through the Pre-1 rather than directly into a computer sound card delivers a stronger, cleaner signal and adds tonal character that plain digital inputs cannot provide.
Bass adjusts plus or minus 12dB at 100Hz, midrange plus or minus 6dB at 1kHz and treble plus or minus 12dB at 10kHz. A loudness control adds +4/0/+2dB at 100Hz, 1kHz and 10kHz to restore perceived bass and treble balance during low-volume listening when the ear is less sensitive at the extremes.
Phono, microphone, tape, tuner, CD/DVD and auxiliary inputs each receive appropriate sensitivity and impedance matching. Line sources see 150mV at 47k ohms with distortion under 0.2 percent and signal-to-noise above 80dB, so switching between sources does not require level adjustment at the amplifier.
A tape record output at 150mV into 100k ohms feeds a recorder while a 500mV preamp output at 47k ohms drives a power amplifier, so recording and playback run at the same time. Frequency response spans 5Hz to 30kHz (+0/-3dB). Dual voltage 120V/60Hz or 220V/50Hz, 18.9 inches wide, 2-year warranty.
