Q: Is there a phono line in with this model, so it can serve as an amplifier for a turntable?
A: Yes there is one phono imput and a ground to connect a turntable...
A: It takes banana plugs or you can bare wire twist
Q: can-you-connect-a-tape-recorder-on-this-unit?
A: Yes you can. It has the REC inputs and outputs needed to connect a cassette deck.
A: I wanted to use my SweetVinyl SugarCube SC-1 Mini magnetic cartridge turntable noise reduction device which needs the same inputs and outputs you require. After a few hours of trying every hookup I could imagine, my answer is no to your question. I have old Bose 901's and the EQ so I am very familiar with the scenario you have in mind. Sorry!
Q: How does this compare to the Yamaha 1020A?
A: undefined

My first good stereo was in 1973. It amazes me the level of quality you can get today with relatively little money. This Yamaha amp sounds really, really good at its price point. It is powerful, musical, and natural sounding. However, these qualities are only evident when when the Pure Direct circuit engaged. Without it, it can sound a little thin and tinny. The amp even has a phono section. BTW, the real RMS power specification is 85 watts per channel @ 8 ohms. Highly recommended.

I am 67. I love music and movies. I tried a 7.2 Yamaha AV receiver. It was too complicated for me. The center speaker I couldn’t control. If you want it simple here’s what you do! Buy the Stereo Yamaha SA-501. It’s 85 Watts RMS at 8 ohms per channel. Buy 2 sets of Bose 301’s. Buy one Polk Audio PSE-10. Stack the Bose. I have been a musician for years. I play bass, electric and acoustic guitar. I am not an audiophile but I do love music. This amp with this set up is THE BEST SYSTEM I have ever heard. This amp has a phono input. My turntable should be here day after tomorrow! The Bose are unreal! The Yamaha is too! The Polk sub is the Best Buy out there! This amp has a musicality that I have never heard before in an amp. Quadraphonic failed. Stereo rules!!! 2 eyes 2 ears! Figure it out!!! Trust me on this. Listen to the intro of Terminator Salvation after you set it up! It is Totally Awesome!!! You have plenty of power for 2 sets of speakers. You need to be able to turn up the Knob to have “headroom”! The 7.2 amp by Yamaha was too much power. I hoped that this review has helped someone!!! Seems like most people don’t talk about speakers and sub woofers. It’s all connected If you do these things the power will come.
