Q: What tv recorder is available for cable tv without a monthly fee?
A: Channel master
A: There are over the air DVRs out there with no subscription costs. I just purchased a tivo roamio for $359.00 on sale, and here's why: The other options (channel master, tablo) were $300 once you added in the required hard drive for storage. The menus, guide, storage capacity, number of tuners, everything about the tivo is superior. And the roamio cost includes a lifetime subscription to the service. So, for around $60 more (on sale, best buy matches online retailers) you get the real McCoy. You're going to have this thing for a while, don't cheap out and get something inferior!
Q: How many shows can be recorded at 1 time? What is the annual $149 fee for?
A: Depends which model you have, but the cable/OTA model is 4 tuners and the cable only model is 6 tuners. So either 4 or 6 shows depending upon the model you purchase. The annual fee is for program guide information and other software capabilities. The subscription is required for the Tivo to function.
A: I'm using a Comcast Cable Card with my Bolt+ and it works fine. My initial issues around cable card activation were because they provided the incorrect cable card for my area, but once that was taken care of it activated fine with the Bolt. On the subscriptions, Tivo quit offering lifetime subscriptions and now offers a monthly or annual subscription. It's basically $150/year or something like $14/month if you go the monthly route.
A: This is correct, it will eliminate the need to rent the xfinity DVR. However instead of renting the xfinity DVR you will need to get a Cable card from xfinity. They may charge you a small monthly fee for that (call them to find out the cost). You will also need to either pay monthly for TiVo, Annually, or the Lifetime membership. All this is outlined on their website. In order to figure out if it's cheaper you would have to see what the monthly cost of renting xfinity equipment, then figure out if the monthly cost of the TiVo box, and the cable card is less expensive. It's generally more cost effective when you have multiple Cable boxes.
A: Yes. Recording is great with Tivo Bolt. Service fee may be taxed if STB is purchased directly from Tivo. https://support.tivo.com/articles/FAQ/Sales-Tax-FAQ#not%20another
Q: If I just want to use it to record TV shows does it require a TiVo subscription?
A: Yes, you need the subscription for the Tivo to function.
Q: So if I buy this TiVo device, there are no fees if I’m using a tv antenna right?
A: Wrong. In order to use the features of TiVo, you must activate it and pay a monthly fee. You still need an antenna to receive the channels, but you need TiVo service to record shows. LB
