    Pricey Mid-Range Acer Gaming Laptop

After receiving this Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI gaming laptop, setting it up, and then testing it out on the games I enjoy playing, I found myself to be “low key” underwhelmed, which ultimately affected whether or not I could recommend this laptop. First off, the laptop’s plastic chassis feels rather cheap, and not what I’d expect from a nearly $3000 retail price gaming laptop. The laptop being thin and lightweight doesn’t bother me, just as long as the fans do their job, vents are placed adequately, and the overall design reflects the requirements for managing the heat generated by modern gaming laptops. I’m well aware that computer components are at a premium at the time of this review. So I was relieved to find that this Acer Predator has a 1TB SSD, rather than the 512gb many gaming laptops seem to come equipped with, by default. These days, having a minimum of 1TB storage on a gaming laptop/PC, is a necessity, imo. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti graphics card is oh so sweet! The Intel Core Ultra 9 series (2026) processor has more than proven itself so far, even though I generally prefer AMD Ryzen processors. I would have liked to have double the RAM, but 16gb is still able to handle the types of games I usually play. Plus, there’s always the option to install more RAM as need, and your budget, allows. Onboard speakers are average; sound could definitely be better. As many gamers do, perhaps consider a soundbar or computer speakers, although a gaming headset is also a viable way to go. The webcam is pretty standard, but I did notice some fuzziness and pixelization no matter the light in the room, or what settings I tweaked to try and improve the picture quality. However, the 16” OLED screen is absolutely beautiful! The colors simply pop; the visuals are crisp and clear. Black pixels were indeed truer. Screen brightness and clarity remained consistent even looking at the screen from the side rather than straight on. I could absolutely tell that difference between this OLED screen and the LED one on my other gaming laptop. Additional notable features: Slim profile; simple, stylish design. Matte finish won’t show fingerprints. Acer did a great job of including an ideal number and types of ports. Fans were relatively quiet, and while I didn’t find the laptop to run particularly ‘hot’, still do allow for plenty of airflow. Exhaust vents on back of hinge and along both sides. Large hinge is not at all flimsy. Four elongated rubberized feet for stability. Acer included a nice zippered slipcover carrying case, which is very cool. I was pleased to not have to remove a ton of bloatware. Just needed to delete the offered McAfee virus protection ‘free trial’. To me, I’d rather use Windows Defender anyway, and decide later if I want to purchase additional security of my choice. Part of the setup process is deciding what software you need/want, and what to keep that may be pre-installed on your machine. I found Predator Sense to be a useful tool for monitoring the laptop’s stats, etc. *Remember to do available Windows updates, and any necessary updates to drivers, BIOS, and preferred software, etc. during your initial setup and customization process. Gameplay on this laptop was fun. Playing my usual games - Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and various Steam client games - was a delight. For most games, I could keep many of my in-game graphical settings at mid-level; with a few select game customizations on high. I still had to choose what mattered most, along with fine tuning some settings as this laptop is by no means “high-end.” Both the NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti and OLED screen helped contribute to my overall gaming experience. Bottom line - While the actual components in this gaming laptop are pretty solid, and perform as intended, even being a “mid-range” choice, I know there are other comparable options out there, and I would suggest exploring those before choosing this Acer. That said, I would only recommend this model laptop with some reservations, based on what I’ve stated in this review.

A Good Laptop With Some Tough Compromises

📦 UNBOXING: Inside the box, you’ll find the laptop, a 230W charging brick, and a fabric laptop sleeve with zipper. Also inside the box is some basic documentation. Everything was packaged well, and used a lot of recyclable material. 💪 BUILD: The Predator Helios Neo 16S AI seems to use a mix of metal and plastic for its chassis design. While it won’t feel as premium as some more expensive slim profile gaming laptops, it doesn’t feel cheap, either. Notably, this laptop also has a rear thermal shelf making its footprint a bit larger than traditional 16” laptops. Unfortunately, my unit has some bulge at the center of the display hinge, so it protrudes a bit when the lid is shut. This may be from overtightening the hinge from the factory, but I’d expect better at this price point. At 4.86 lbs on my food-grade scale, there are lighter gaming laptops on the market, but it’s certainly not anywhere near close to the “desktop replacement” laptops that have much thicker designs. It still remains quite thin at a maximum thickness of 0.74 inches on its tapered design. 🔌PORTS: The Helios Neo 16S AI is well-equipped with ports that most users would care about. On the left, you have a 2.5G slim ethernet port, a USB 3.2 gen 1 Type-A port, a MicroSD card reader that maxes out at UHS-I speeds, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack. On the right, you have 2x USB 3.2 gen 2 Type-A ports and status LED indicators. And on the rear, you have a DC barrel input for 230W power, an HDMI 2.1 port, a Thunderbolt 4 Type-C port, and a USB 3.2 gen 2 Type-C port (with DisplayPort). Both Type-C ports support charging at 90 W / 100 W at 20 V. Lower wattage USB-C PD chargers may not work well with this laptop, so plan accordingly. Overall, I’m happy with the port selection Acer is offering on this laptop. Connecting a mouse, headset, and keyboard to this laptop simultaneously is easy, and those with Thunderbolt docking stations can further simplify their desk setups. 🔧 EXPANSION & UPGRADES: Unscrewing the (10) T6 torx screws on the bottom panel, you’ll find a few upgrade points for this laptop. There are 2x m.2 2880 PCIe 4.0 NVMe slots on this laptop, with one occupied by a 1TB Kingston OM8PJP41024K3-CA0 in my unit. Additionally, there are 2x SODIMM slots pre-populated with 2x 8GB SK Hynix HMCG66AHBVA315N CSODIMMs in my unit, but it should support 2x 32GB CSODIMMs of DDR5 memory at 6400MT/s. Given the cost of memory these days, I cannot overstate how great it is that you can upgrade to a higher capacity later if/when it becomes more affordable. Lastly, there is a Killer Wi-Fi 6E AX1675i adapter installed in a m.2 2230 slot. So if down the line you need to upgrade the Wi-Fi card, it should be quite easy to do. ⌨️ KEYBOARD & TOUCHPAD: The Neo 16S AI has a good keyboard. I’m generally able to achieve ~100 wpm with high accuracy. It’s easy to type on without being loud or annoying. It also supports 4 zones of RGB by dividing up the keyboard into 4 equal sections. This allows for some different RGB effects, but you can also keep it simple with a static color, as well. The mechanical touchpad uses the Microsoft Precision driver, so it supports multi-touch gestures without issue. However, the touchpad is on the smaller side compared to some other laptops. With that said, I didn’t find it to be so small that it was a hindrance to use. It also uses matte plastic instead of etched glass, so it may wear down from fingerprint oils over time. Physical clicks will be best done towards the bottom of the touchpad, as the top has much more resistance to click. 📺 DISPLAY: Onboard the laptop is the Samsung SDC41AB—a 16” 240Hz OLED panel that supports G-SYNC and is DisplayHDR True Black 500 certified. What this means is excellent response times, superb motion clarity, deep contrast, rich colors, and gets plenty bright. It is a glossy panel, so it does have reflective properties. If you plan to do a lot of gaming on this display, you’ll find it to be a joy. One thing that I noticed out of the box is that despite being a 10-bit panel, 8-bit color is enabled by default, so I’d recommend opening the Intel Graphics Software app and changing the Color Depth setting to enable 10-bit color. At minimum, that should help eliminate color banding across gradients. The one notable downside is that this display is locked to 240Hz, which means it does not drop lower to save power. Many laptops of this caliber would still have the ability to drop to 60Hz, but Acer opted not to do so, and I think that’s a real miss. But after researching more about this locked framerate, I was able to use Custom Resolution Utility (CRU) to add a 120Hz mode, but the display gets much dimmer in this mode, and it loses color accuracy. It’s not an ideal solution, but it can be a useful workaround if you want to save power while on battery—more on that later. 📹 WEBCAM & MICROPHONE: The 1080p IR webcam supports Windows Hello facial recognition, and delivers a reasonably sharp image quality in good lighting conditions. It does not fare so well in darker lighting conditions, which remains a common issue on the vast majority of laptop webcams. Two integrated microphones flank the webcam, but there is also another one on the outer edge of the laptop to the right of the touchpad that is used for AI noise reduction. You can change the noise reduction settings via the Realtek Audio Console, or you can turn it off and use Microsoft’s Voice Clarity feature in the Windows microphone settings. Either way, the integrated microphone should be plenty decent for calls. 🔊 SPEAKERS & HEADPHONE: One of the cost-saving measures for this laptop design was the speakers. Frankly, they’re not great. They are bottom-firing which makes them sound tinnier, and with only 2 small drivers, there isn’t really any bass. So you’re really going to be best off using headphones, as these speakers don’t deliver a very immersive experience. Even with the DTS:X Ultra app, trying to customize a sound profile for these laptop speakers won’t yield something that I’m going to enjoy, but they can be made somewhat passable with a bit of EQ. The 3.5mm headphone output is also reasonably good for higher sensitivity headphones and can drive a pair like the Sennheiser HD 560S without issue. I also tried a low sensitivity headphone like the Dan Clark Expanse, and the headphone was able to deliver comfortably loud volumes, and even exceed what I would want. By default, DTS:X Ultra is enabled for headphones, too, but it can be disabled for headphone output. If you want the purest listening experience, I recommend disabling DTS:X Ultra for headphones and also disabling audio enhancements and spatial sound in the windows sound settings for the headphone output. ⚡ PERFORMANCE: This model uses an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus with 8 P-Cores and 16 E-Cores. It’s an iterative improvement on Core Ultra 9 285HX that yields about an 8% average improvement in performance for gaming. While it won’t take the crown of best mobile CPUs for gaming, it certainly stands high up on the charts. More importantly, the mobile NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti has 12GB of GDDR7 RAM with a maximum graphics power of 115W, so you should expect less performance than a bulkier laptop with a 140W maximum graphics power. If you want to maximize performance, use a laptop stand and use the turbo profile and additionally set the fan control to max. While the fans are loud in this configuration, it does well to dissipate heat and keep the system from thermal throttling. I was able to achieve a 3DMark Time Spy score of 16227. High-end games like Cyberpunk 2077 can even run with path tracing at over 60fps using DLSS and frame generation. In my testing, the GPU mostly sustained around 100W of power with some occasional bursts to 115W. I feel it’s quite unfortunate that this system comes with only 16GB of RAM @ 6400 MT/s, and some of this is reserved for Intel integrated graphics, as well. Even after a bit of debloating, Windows still consumes a lot of memory. If multitasking with a web browser, discord, and a high-end game, it’s a lot more likely that Windows will need to pagefile to the SSD which can lead to stutters and make the system feel less responsive. I was able to find a used kit of 2x16GB SODIMMs @ 5600MT/s in my local market for $200 (a good deal in this market), and this improved my ability to have more applications running. In 3DMark Time Spy, this RAM yielded a < 2% difference in performance degradation from the stock 6400MT/s kit. Overall, performance is good for a slim-class gaming laptop and is even competitive with more premium slim designs. 🔋 BATTERY: Battery is one of the bigger shortcomings of this laptop. Despite the 92Whr battery, power consumption remains high due to the high refresh rate display, applications running on the Nvidia Graphics, and the CPU turboing while on battery. Changing the maximum processor state on battery to 99% down from 100% can prevent the CPU from turboing. Using a custom 120Hz refresh rate and lower brightness can reduce power consumption fairly significantly. Using the Eco mode while on battery can prolong its use, and ensuring apps aren’t using the Nvidia Graphics while on battery can further stretch the battery life. With all of these changes, you’re likely to see only 2-4 hours of battery with light usage. 🧐 CONCLUSION: I have mixed feelings about the Helios Neo 16S AI. Plugged in, performance is actually reasonably good for a slim gaming laptop. But unplugged, battery life is quite poor compared to its competition. It has a great display that unfortunately lacks a 60hz mode for battery saving, has a good array of ports and is pretty quiet while on battery. Upgradable RAM and the ability to add another SSD is great, but its build quality is mid-tier. The previous model with a Core Ultra 9 275HX and 32GB of RAM costs significantly less while delivering similar performance. My recommendation? Wait for a sale.

Sharp 2.5K Display, Powerful, and Lightweight

Acer now has in the Predator Neo line of gaming laptops, the Predator Neo 16S AI. With it’s 16” 2.5k OLED display, a Core Ultra 9 Series 2 processor, and an RTX 5070 Ti, it makes for a really good upper entry level gaming laptop. CPU/RAM The Predator Neo comes with an Intel Core Ultra 9 Series 2 CPU. This is a good CPU which certainly helps with Games and makes the Neo’s responsiveness fast and snappy. It also comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM. This is still a base amount of RAM for an entry level gaming laptop, but I feel that it should have been stepped up to 32GB. Given the RAM situation in 2026, keeping the base 16GB of RAM is a way to cut costs. Though, I can upgrade later if I want to. This does have an impact of RAM intensive games. Battlefield 6 sessions were maxing out the RAM on the Neo. The game still played well, but 32GB would have helped. GPU/Display The 16” 2.5K OLED display is the best laptop screen I’ve seen. It’s crisp, vibrant, and has an incredibly high refresh rate. It makes for a very pleasant FPS gaming experience. When playing Battlefield 6, I was getting up to 80 FPS at 2.5K resolution with the Turbo profile on. The limitation involved three things. The GPU, VRAM, and system RAM. The CPU wasn’t maxed out, but the RTX 5070 Ti laptop GPU with 12GB of VRAM and the 16GB of system RAM were maxed out. If the laptop had 32GB of RAM and the GPU had 16GB of VRAM, I would have gotten higher frame rates, but this is, due to the GPU, VRAM, and system RAM, an entry level laptop, albeit the upper end of entry level. Other Components It has Killer WiFi and wired NICs. I was getting up to 850Mbps for downloads over my wireless connection with multiple walls between the Neo and my router. The 1TB NVMe SSD is a step up from previous generation laptops at this level. There is plenty of space to hold multiple FPS, RTS, and RPGs that I have along with many LLMs. The keyboard has RGB lighting and the keys feel good. It has a full keyboard including num pad. The trackpad is large and smooth. Acer added in an RGB lighted button for quick switching through the different power profiles. I can quickly go from Quiet to Balanced to Power to Turbo and I can see what profile the Neo is currently using by the color of the RGB light of the button. I’m glad Acer added that in. Ports There are a good number of ports on the Neo. It has a USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, a micro-SD card reader, RJ-45 ethernet port, and a microphone/headphone jack on the left side. On the right is a USB-A 3.2 port, a USB-A 3.2 that allows for charging a device even when the laptop is off. On the Back is a full HDMI 2.1 port, Thunderbolt 4 type C port, USB-C DC-in port (supports PD fast charging up to 100W), and the power adapter DC-in port. Software Acer includes the Predator Sense application. This is where I can set different power profiles, run checks on the RAM, Battery, and SSD, monitor CPU and GPU information. Acer also has a few additional programs that can be installed on the Neo that involve AI. One is an chat interface to LLMs. It gives me the option to use either of two Llama models or Gemini. It’s convenient as I don’t have to open a browser to use Gemini or download something like Ollama to use either of the two Llama models locally. I would like to see support for more local models, but I’m happy to see Acer include this. I hope they update the app later to support other LLMs. Final Thoughts I suspect the 16GB of DDR5 and the 12GB of VRAM was a cost savings decision by Acer given the global RAM and VRAM situation we have in 2026. Even with that, the performance is really good for an entry level laptop and the high refresh rate of the 2.5K OLED display make for a good gaming experience. Thumbs up to Acer regarding the display. The laptop is light compared to other gaming laptops which I’m thankful for. Carrying this in my laptop backpack will be less burdensome given how light it is and the power block being of a reasonable size and weight. Overall, I’m happy with the direction Acer is going with the Predator Neo. If you are looking for an upper end entry level laptop with an incredible display, then definitely consider the Acer Predator Neo 16S AI gaming laptop.

    This Predator Is Your Ally!

Acer Preadtor Helios NEO 16s AI Looks: Simple, more elegant execution of the masculine gaming laptop aesthetic. It's still true to what it is; Matte black with subtle nods to what beastly hardware might be under the hood, but you won't feel self conscious or embarrassed using it out in public. Set the RGB backlighting to a solid color like white, and it'll blend right in with other professional laptops. Build quality: Solid build. Hinge is smooth, stable, not too tight. Everything feels premium to the touch. Like all matte finish surfaces, it's a fingerprint magnet. Keyboard: It's a full keyboard. Which means a full suite of dedicated media keys, a number-pad, and a couple of unique keys, which is very nice to have. Pleasant to type on. Keys feel satisfying to press and responsive while remaining very quiet. Fully backlit with addressable RGB software. The track-pad is adequate. Screen: The screen is gorgeous. Best I've seen on a laptop. 2560x1600 240Hz refresh rate OLED with G-Sync is gonna be hard to beat in this space. The screen is a little reflective in the light simply due to the nature of the panel. Colors really pop and blacks are deep which is what you'd expect from an OLED panel. The VESA HDR certification ensures you're able to take advantage of HDR compatible content. Though this true black 500 Certification is on the lower end of VESA certifications, it's still far superior to even the best LCD screen and is very impressive to find in a laptop form factor. Th 240Hz refresh rate is buttery smooth while gaming, modeling in fusion 360, or normal use. The G-Sync ensures there's no screen tearing while gaming. Just overall a very pleasing to the eye screen- excellent execution. Hardware Specs: It's fast. It's powerful. The RTX 5070ti in this is an absolute weapon. 12Gb of VRAM on top of the system's 16gb of RAM really helps with rendering and cutting down on loading times. Paired up with the Intel Core Ultra 9 CPU, this thing can play games at impressive graphical settings. 3D modeling in fusion 360, was a cake walk. It will chew through most everything the average enthusiast will probably throw at it. One caveat: like all gaming designated laptops, this thing runs HOT when under load. The fans work very well at helping to shed the heat and protect the internals, but that means it's shedding the heat potentially onto YOU, so doing demanding tasks while it's sitting in your lap is not recommended. Keep it up on a hard surface so it can adequately shed the heat. This is simply the nature of the beast when it comes to high performance laptops, though. Gaming Performance: The suite of games I used to test this were: Forza Horizon 5, Cyberpunk 2077, and Monster Hunter Wilds. It easily chewed through Forza Horizon 5; no surprise there. Max settings, high stable frame-rates. Performed masterfully, as expected. Cyberpunk was a much tougher beast, no surprises there. Had to play with some things on medium and only taking advantage of certain ray tracing and real shadows/ reflections features. The game still looks gorgeous and is very playable at these high settings, but it's still part tech demo so it's gonna stress test any hardware. This machine performed very admirably, especially given the portable form factor. Monster Hunter Wilds is known for being a poorly optimized mess at times on PC. That holds true on here. It does a great job, that game gives the RTX 5080 in my main gaming desktop some trouble every now and then. So the fact this plays that game so well with the exception of some micro stuttering here and there, is great. The Acer Predator Neo Gaming Laptop is a a fantastic machine for doing battle in another world or doing the mundane normal every day tasks like, watching a video, homework or surfing the interwebs! Highly recommended for those that live and work in the real world but like to take time out to fight in a Galaxy not so Far, Far Away.

If i could rate this a 4.5 i would but anyways a gamer this laptop its great it can handle red dead 2 max call of duty ww2 any game that is from like 2022 downward csn handle it but when jt comes to marvel rivals everh time id move my camera it dropped to like 4 fps before going back up to like 90 fps overall it doesnt really handle mavel rivals i obvously pyt yltra performance it didnt help much i put it on turbo and mange to pnly get like 150 fps but when id turn ky camera it dropped to ljke 30 fps so very laggy indeed the proccesor is amazing very fast and very like awesome i can have like 8 diffrent apps/games open with no issue i can screenshare in diacord with ntothing to worry about though i do jot recommended playjng game while downlaoding somrthing because you will experince network connection issues like i did in valorant and roblox though it might just be my wifi anyways the rtx 5070 ti with 12 gb of ram does an amazing job no sweat with like 8-5 gb of vram left for anything you want to maximize this the display is beautiful though i do noy reccomend playing with max brightness because it will strain you eye because od the display so id reccomd get gaming glasses first for this because it will strain your eyes with the naked eye and give you hradaches also for my valorant players i reccomend adjusting the speakrs to ur liking for footsteps etc because if you dont customize and you select the presets its hlorible audio its nlt good the speakers suck ig they arent customized so do that first obviouslt 240 hz its amazing
