Synopsis

10 Days in a Madhouse
The stunning, true story of journalist Nellie Bly's now-legendary undercover stint in a mental hospital in 1887. This dramatic biopic follows a 23-year-old Bly (Caroline Barry), a fledgling and peternaturally talented news writer looking to expose rampant abuse, corruption, murder and gross mistreatment of patients at the insane asylum in a mental hospital known as Blackwell's Island. To gain access to the asylum, however, Bly must first convince the requisite authorities that she is insane. After being admitted into the wing, Bly uncovers shocking truths and injustices that would gain the nation's attention and launched her career as one of the most influential journalists in American history. ~ Tom Ciampoli, Rovi

    Wonderful tribute to Nellie Bly.

Nellie Bly was an infectiously likable person which was very well displayed in this film. A very very young woman coming of age in the 1880's is blessed with an enthusiasm for journalism and helping people. Joseph Pulitzer hires her as a reporter. Her assignment is to go undercover in an isolated mental institution to report on the treatment of the patients. Nellie Bly's experiences are well documented and this film is faithful to the real-life experiences. I appreciated the care the film took to establish the ornate world more wealthy world Nellie Bly lives in, which then contrasted harshly with the stark, frightening world of the mental institution.
