12 Monkeys [Special Edition] [DVD] [1995]

12 Monkeys finally gets stellar treatment on DVD from Universal Home Entertainment with this special edition of the 1995 hit. Two previous movie-only DVD versions have been released through the years, but neither was able to touch the laserdisc release, which included the incredible Hamster Factor documentary and the commentary from Terry Gilliam and producer Charles Roven. For those that have been waiting to throw those valuable discs in storage, this is your chance. Both features have been added to this DVD, and rightly so! For those who don't know, The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys is a 90-minute making-of from the same people that brought you the fabulous Lost in La Mancha documentary, which Gilliam granted permission to film because of Hamster's success. The commentary is just as entertaining and informative, with both bonus features acting as a complimentary story of the long and arduous shoot, which in itself provides just as much drama and comedy as the actual film. Other extras include the original theatrical trailer, along with the 12 Monkey Archives, which is packed with plenty of production sketches and storyboards. Production notes have been included if anyone is interested, though the real good stuff lies in the rest of the extras and the all-new digitally remastered picture, which showcases the truly incredible anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen image that paired with the Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks make for a well done and highly in-demand disc that should do quite well on the rental and retail shelves.

    Synopsis

    12 Monkeys
An intense film about time travel, this sci-fi entry was directed by Terry Gilliam, a member of the comedy troupe Monty Python. The film stars Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner of the state in the year 2035 who can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has wiped out most of the Earth's population and the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous. Returning to the year 1990, six years before the start of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned in a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like mad ravings. There he meets a scientist named Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), the mad son of an eminent virologist (Christopher Plummer). Cole is returned by the authorities to the year 2035, and finally ends up at his intended destination in 1996. He kidnaps Dr. Railly in order to enlist her help in his quest. Cole discovers graffiti by an apparent animal rights group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys, but as he delves into the mystery, he hears voices, loses his bearings, and doubts his own sanity. He must figure out if Goines, who seems to be a raving lunatic, holds the key to the puzzle. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

OK, I don't normally write reviews but after reading the previous two, I had to. They didn't do the movie justice, they give you the idea that the plot is hard to follow. This statement can't be further from the truth. Yes, if you do actually sit down and watch the movie you should be able to pick up what is going on. But thats the catch, its a movie that makes you think, you actually have to use your noggin. The ending ties everything up nicely and in a moment of clarity you understand what happened, and in my opinion those are the best kind of movies. The kind that makes you think and then when it's over you go back to watch and then you can pick up on all of the little subtleties that were previously missed. I haven't even mentioned that this was probably one of Brad Pitt's greatest roles, he plays a great raving lunatic. Bruce Willis is great like always.

12 Monkeys is one of those classic sci fi films that are under appreciated but require a viewing. The tale, while bleak and dark are enhanced to a cinema masterpiece by Terry Gilliams directing, the wonderful visuals, and probably the best performances from Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt to date. I also have the DVD copy to compare to the Blu that I just bought and if it proves anything it's that once you go Blu Ray, you can't go back. The picture is stunning and the sound out of my speaker system puts the DVD to shame, and the value for this under ten dollars right now makes this a truly wonderful buy. The extras are still to be desired though, it does have a long documentary film length thing, but no deleted scenes or more interesting things, I see a Criterion Release someday with all the bells and whistles but this is a minor complaint for a great film. This movie is a must buy.

12 Monkeys is my second favorite time travel movie where a hero gets institutionalized because they know the world is going to end. 12 Monkeys is my second favorite Terry Gilliam movie about a dude who just really wants a phone call. 12 Monkeys is my favorite movie starring Bruce Willis about somebody who sees dead people all around him. 12 Monkeys is my second favorite movie where Brad Pitt is the crazy leader of an anarchist cell. 12 Monkeys is my favorite movie where Bruce Willis goes back in time and encounters his younger self.

This can almost always be found in BB's various "$7 discount bins" of blu-rays, and it's certainly worth that. The video isn't extraordinary, but certainly an upgrade over the DVD, and the audio is where it's at with an excellent lossless 5.1 track. It's also got some nice, and not overwhelming, amount of bonus material. Certainly worth a pick up for fans of the film or Terry Gilliam and/or Bruce Willis.

This a brilliant film, my wife and I love it! This is a very complex movie that some people I know had to watch it a couple of times to put all the pieces together. Bruce Willis is fantastic in this film. This is the kind of movie you never get tired of watching. This is kind of a mix between, Minority Report, Dark City and The Time Machine, but still rather unique in its own way. This is just a great movie, I highly recommend it!

12 Monkeys has always been an enjoyable movie, even if you only enjoy it for the great sets and locations, never mind the psych ward cross eyed crazy haired Brad Pitt. For a movie in the 5 dollar Blu-Ray bin in my opinion it's worth it. The plot is interesting, I've always been a fan of post apocalyptic time travel movies and this has a Mad Max meets Terminator feel.

Brad Pitt's breakout performance showcasing the range of his acting abilities. This is such an incredible movie that demands you rewatch it more than once. And even after the 3-4th viewing you'll still be just as engaged as you were the first time. Definitely worth owning and definitely worth the shelf space in your media collection!

I bought this cause i remember seeing it a long time ago and now the 12 monkeys tv series came out and that was fantastic. Well i watched it and I may watch it again in another 15 years but for $5 bucks or so it was worth it. Brad Pitt does a good job. Bruce Willis is meh.
