13 minutes…..as in after a warning, you got 13 minutes to get to your fallout shelter as the tornado will be right on top of you. Yes, this is another disaster movie, but not in the likes of “Twister” or other big budget Hollywood movies. This is low budget flick based in a small town in Oklahoma about 4 small time families trying to weather the storm (excuse the pun). There’s nothing flashy here. Some big name actors here (Amy Smart, Ann Heche, Thora Birch, Paz Vega & Trace Adkins) portraying simple mid-western folks. This movie takes its time. Slow build-up before the tornado hits allows for a lot of character development which I personally love because once you connect with them you are truly worried about their survival. Takes almost an hour before the actual tornado hits and once it does you are just holding on for dear life for the duration of it…..maybe ten minutes worth. The rest of the movie is the heartbreaking aftermath; devastation one can only imagine and gives you a sense of what it is like to actually lose everything and feel for those people who have gone through this. Who survives and who doesn’t is what this part of the movie is about and you’re vested in it because of the character development phase of the movie. So yeah “Twister” was a lot more fun, but this one is the real deal.

I expect to see violent tornadoes and destruction in a movie about a tornado, however all you see during most of the movie is people having their ordinary and boring lifes. Dialoges are dumb, acting is mediocre, and there is some drama, but it feels like if you are watching a telenovela.
