Synopsis

Adventures in Babysitting
Teenager Chris Parker (Elisabeth Shue) would rather party with her boyfriend, but when her beau breaks their date she reluctantly accepts a babysitting job. It isn't all TV and icebox-raiding when Chris' best friend Brenda (Penelope Ann Miller) calls her to announce that she's stranded at the bus station. With her youthful charges in tow (one of whom, 15-year-old Brad (Keith Coogan), has a hopeless crush on the babysitter), Chris heads into downtown Chicago to go to Brenda's rescue. Thus begins a roller coaster ride of comic mishaps, unexpected perils and hairbreadth escapes. In one bit, blues singer Albert Collins refuses to allow Chris and company to leave the nightclub they've wandered into until they agree to sing along with a song borrowed from, of all things the 1939 B-picture Nancy Drew, Reporter! . Screenwriter and Steven Spielberg protégé Chris Columbus made his directorial debut with Adventures in Babysitting. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Bought it for my daughter and her children!

My wife and I enjoyed this movie so much that, with Best Buy's fantastic pricing, we could afford to buy a copy for my daughter and her family. Who hasn't experienced both being under the care of a teenage baby sitter in your youth and then, as teenagers themselves, working as a baby sitter to earn some much appreciated spending money. It has always been a "right of passage" from adolescence to the teen years and is usually the only opportunity for a 'first job'. However, this particular babysitting job suddenly becomes "An Adventure in Babysitting" when it slowly and continuously wends its way through hysterically funny and exciting twists and turns that will leave you laughing throughout all the unexpected situations and how each resolution brings on another more funnier and more challenging situation to overcome. Fortunately, the events of this fictional movie never occurred in our experiences but are the result of a great storyline, great writing and best of all a great and believable cast, led by Elisabeth Shue. This movie is guaranteed to tickle your funny-bone and could easily bring you your most unforgettable and enjoyable movie experience.

Chris Columbus' first directorial effort is still one of my favorites from him. Some elements are dated and contrived, and it hasn't aged as well as some of its kin from the era, but it's extremely likable, thanks mostly to Elisabeth Shue, who effortlessly carries it. This DVD is not anamorphic, but zoom it and it looks at least as good as it would have in a theater in the 80s. Very much a product of its time, but if you account for that it's a lot of fun.

    Cute fluff. Nothing special

My guess is that they were trying to make Ferris Bueller for the pre-teen set. While they didn't come close, this is a nice, harmless piece of fluff. Elizabeth Shue is a cute and resourceful heroine who helps her ditzy friend and protects the kids she was hired to sit (they're pretty resourceful too) as they navigate the wilds of the big city from chop shops to frat parties. There's no real reason for anyone over the age of 14 to watch this. I just like the frat party scene because the band playing it is fronted by Southside Johnny.

Elizabeth Shue gives her all as a young woman who, though disappointed that her "dream date" had to cancel, decides to spend the night babysitting the neighbor's 2 kids (and friend). A series of more & more outrageous escapades happen as they wind up travelling from suburb to Chicago to help rescue a friend. It's all delightful and entertaining and sweet. We LOVE this movie!

I like this movie and blu-ray so much that I bought a second blu-ray for my son as I expose him to my childhood classics. It looks great for an older movie and is just a good family movie from the 80’s.
