Synopsis

All About Eve
Based on the story The Wisdom of Eve by Mary Orr, All About Eve is an elegantly bitchy backstage story revolving around aspiring actress Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter). Tattered and forlorn, Eve shows up in the dressing room of Broadway mega-star Margo Channing (Bette Davis), weaving a melancholy life story to Margo and her friends. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. Before long, it becomes apparent that naïve Eve is a Machiavellian conniver who cold-bloodedly uses Margo, her director Bill Sampson (Gary Merill), Lloyd's wife Karen (Celeste Holm), and waspish critic Addison De Witt (George Sanders) to rise to the top of the theatrical heap. Also appearing in All About Eve is Marilyn Monroe, introduced by Addison De Witt as "a graduate of the Copacabana school of dramatic art." This is but one of the hundreds of unforgettable lines penned by writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the most famous of which is Margo Channing's lip-sneering admonition, "Fasten your seat belts. It's going to be a bumpy night." All About Eve received 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A classic back-stabber of a movie. There's a reason it set records for 14 Oscar nominations, and 6 Academy Awards (including Best Picture). The Blu-ray edition presents a great B&W picture transfer, and further upgrade than the DVD version. The 5.1 audio is very good, although remember this is from an original mono sound track (which is also included). There is some hiss in the quiet sections. There are plenty of extras, well above average in number and quality, but all appear to be standard definition. The movie may not appeal to all, but it is very well written and superbly acted. I would highly recommend the Blu-ray version of this movie. Especially since I was able to add it to the library while on sale. Highly recommended.

After watching this film, I know why it's a classic! The acting is superb, especially Bette Davis, but I was blown away by the writing. The narration was often complex, if not poetic, and really drew me in. I have a tendency to find the "dated" aspects of older films. But this one had me chuckling on a number of occasions and thinking, "This could be re-released today with no problem." As with most older films, not everyone will enjoy All About Eve. Eve's "performance" can get pretty tiresome and the conflict is almost entirely dialogue-driven. However, the presentation of this work is truly memorable and deserves a viewing from every film buff.

My first viewing of this classic on BluRay made me wish I'd seen it sooner. Having 14 Oscar nominations (like Titantic years later) when I read the history of this film made me appreciate even more. Will watch this several more times over the years. Bette Davis and Ann Baxter were superb as well as George Sanders.

I'm a huge fan of Bette Davis, & to me this is the greatest of all her movies. The story is strong and very captivating. You'll see the rise & fall of the great Margo Channing (Davis), the pure evil of Eve (Baxter), & all the wonderful characters in between. If you're into old hollywood you should really check this movie out. It won best picture for 1950 & definitely deserved it. Plus this is the movie that got everyone noticing a beautiful unknown blonde. Aka: Marilyn Monroe~_-

All About Eve is one of my favorite movies ever. The screenplay, the drama, and Bette Davis are absolutely brilliant. I just can't get over her performance as Margo Channing. It was one for the ages. Not to mention it is a delight to see Marilyn Monroe in such an adorable role. Her part is so small but This film was deservedly nominated for 14 Academy Awards in 1950 (only Titanic has had that many). just an incredible movie. Hands down.

This remastered edition high-lights the beauty of B&W cinema and presents an array of actresses and actors who are at the pinnacle of their profession, especially Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. You'll enjoy watching this classic to see, among other things, the settings of some famous movie lines, like "Buckle up, it's going to be a bumpy night." by Davis.

This classic has never looked so good as it does on BD. The film holds you in every scene. Every time I re-watch the film (this time it was too long a break from my previous view (on DVD)) I find both narrative and performances nuances that I would not have seen before.

A true classic. I saw this film in my class back in 2004. I loved it since. Was waiting for it to come on Blu-ray. Only problem I have as I do with a lot of old films is, there are no people of color in the film. Not one. And it's based in NYC.
