Movie Has Some Twists to it But very Much Enjoyed Antebellum
This review is from Antebellum [Includes Digital Copy] [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray] [2020]

Antebellum is a great movie that suffers from a misguided marketing campaign, bordering on deceptive. If you've seen the trailers, which gave very little away about the film's plot, you were likely left with the certainty that this is a supernatural horror film. Unfortunately (and rather unfairly) the elements of the trailer that make this seem like a "bump in the night" horror movie have been treated for the trailer, and are not how they appear in the film itself. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, because it's more fun to be surprised by the film, but I want to remove the one nasty surprise. It's not the ghosts or demons that you have to watch out for in this one. Much more of a psychological thriller than the trailer would have you believe, once you get past the initial feeling of being "cheated" in some way by a marketing bait-and-switch, you'll find the film is possibly even more terrifying for what it it than what you may have expected it to be. Go in without expectations, and enjoy the amazing acting, the twisting plot, and the frightening places the film will take you if you're willing to simply follow. Most of the negative reviews I've read seem to stem from people's disappointment based on the expectations the trailer gave them, and I think that hurt the film's performance a great deal. It's almost like the studio didn't trust the movie to be able to stand on it's own merits, or at least be able to attract an audience for what it actual is, so the marketing department decided to try to draw an audience by promising other than what was delivered. I wish studios wouldn't do that, because they wind up condemning great films--Antebellum included--to viewer backlash when the "truth" comes out. Janelle Monae rules this movie in an amazing performance, and the story that's actually here is chilling. Highly recommend it to anyone willing to let go of the false promises of the marketing campaign and engage with the film on its own merits.
