AOC USB powered portable LED 16” laptop monitor (e1649Fwu)
15.6 inch viewable area, 1366 x 768 resolution
Pros – Lightweight, portable, easy to use with single USB connection, relatively inexpensive
Cons – Initial setup is clunky, rotating screen orientation needs work, noticeable screen flicker while web browsing
Summary: The AOC USB powered 16 inch LED portable monitor is a functional portable accessory. While I didn’t have the opportunity to test out its suitability for gaming, I can say that students and mobile professionals alike will enjoy its portability and ease of use with its single USB cord. Other limitations that were noted included inability to get the screen rotation feature to function when changing for horizontal to vertical orientation and there was a noticeable amount of screen flicker ironically when visiting the AOC website. That said, it was still functional enough for me to complete daily tasks.
This product fills a unique space in the computer screen market. With the proliferation of the Macbook Air models and PC Ultrabooks there may be quite a few people who might be interested in this product. I would give it an overall grade of C and recommend it for mobile professionals and college students that have laptops that are 13” or smaller.
Setup: C-
(Windows 7 professional 64bit) It took longer than usual to setup this monitor. The assumption was that since it was a USB device, it would be a quick plug and play installation. Instead, I ran into a couple of minor annoyances; it was difficult to find the startup exe file to load the drivers, the CD rom has annoying advertisements and launches blind web links when you click on icons that you would expect will load the drivers.
Once I finally found the correct drivers and installed them on my computer I was up and running (but only after a quick reboot).
Style: A-
The monitor itself is nice enough to look at. It actually takes some of the strain off of my aging eyes when connected to my 13.3 inch Sony Vaio Z series laptop. The LED screen has nice appearance at its default setting, nevertheless, your ability to adjust colors will rely on the quality and settings of the video card in the laptop you are connected to.
The e1649Fwu has a rotating, fold away, kickstand in the back which allows you to position the screen in either landscape or horizontal orientation. It is supposed to shift the screen orientation automatically whenever you adjust the kickstand to a new position however I ran into problems getting this feature to function for me. This is not a deal breaker for me but it may be for others who would prefer to use the monitor primarily in the vertical position.
The e1649Fwu is powered solely by the included USB cord, which also happens to be the only video connection option (neither VGA or HDMI connection options are included). I have to say it is nice that all you need to connect this monitor to your laptop is a simple USB cord. This makes the monitor a highly portable and convenient accessory for mobile computing.
Functionality: B+
I guess one of the biggest questions that needs to be answered is why would you need the e1649Fwu? I immediately recognized several useful applications for this product. I like the fact that you can use it as an easy to setup dual screen monitor. If I needed to share my screen with a colleague or coworker in close quarters this would be an excellent option. Also if I needed a simple desktop option at home or at work for my Netbook, MacBook Air or any variety of the newly emerging category of Ultrabook laptops, this would be a great choice. Finally if you would like to have a portable monitor to work in a library, a coffee shop booth, or anywhere else you might like to work this would be a good option. Being both a mobile professional and a PhD student products like this appeal to me.
Performance: C+
To take this little monitor through its paces I tested DVD playback, web browsing, YouTube playback and basic computing. I did experience some screen flicker on the monitor while visiting the AOC product website. I did not see any flicker on the laptop screen. At one point the screen failed to appear at all, causing me to have to close that web browser and try another browser. Upon doing so I began to see the same flickering on the AOC product splash page. All the other websites I visited seemed to work fine but that was a minor annoyance.
I did not get a chance to test this monitor’s ability to handle any gaming. I suspect that it might perform well in light gaming but in demanding 3D gaming (i.e., WOW or first person shooters) it may have more difficulty. This has some to do with the limitations of USB bandwidth and some to do with the capability of the video card of the laptop it is connected to.
I would also be remiss if I failed to mention that a product like this will impact your laptop’s battery life because it does draw power directly from the laptop. Even while testing this product and writing this review I was prompted to connect to a power source. This is not a big deal for me because almost all of my laptops are capable of 5+ hours of battery life but it should be kept in mind that while the monitor may not require a power cord, while using this product your laptop might depending on the kind of tasks you are working on (i.e., watching DVD’s, light gaming, ect.).
