- A: AnswerThe Cable Operators (MSOs) have complete control of what cable modem/gateway hardware they will allow installed and the firmware it uses, on their cable plant. This means anything directly connected to the cable plant (COAX) in your house. They do this to ensure that nothing happens to anyone upstream from your connections. Cable Operators follow the DOCSIS Specifications that control this methodology of firmware upgrades as well as providing security for the firmware upgrades. Cable Operators also run both the products and firmware through their own test cycles to approve any manufacturers’ modems, wireless gateways, and the associated firmware updates for deployment. This is not an ARRIS only implementation, but the required implementation of any cable device manufacturer. After an MSO has tested and approved a new version of firmware for a cable device, they will then “push” that new firmware out to the devices.

- A: AnswerUnfortunately, Mediacom does not allow us to sell voice modems directly to consumers. You will need to get your modem through them. If you change your plan in the future and do not require voice service, any ARRIS SURFboard modem will work with Mediacom.

Great Modem from ARRIS!!!!
This modem was exactly what I was looking for and I love the look of it as well as how the lights on the front aren’t super bright either. Runs pretty cool and gets me more than enough speed. I have a 600 MB plan and when doing an Xfinity speed test connected directly to my Linksys router, I actually get over 600 MB with the test. On my phone, I get up to 450 MB with an iPhone 11 Pro, Downloading anything is even faster now and much smoother no matter the file size. Setting up the modem was also relatively easy. At least for me, I was able to set it up through the Xfinity app without having to talk to anybody at all. There are 2 gigabit outputs on the back and the second one you do have to contact xfinity to get it activated. But at the moment, I have enough hook ups with my router so I didn’t bother with that yet. Also I don’t have an actual phone to hook up to it yet, but the phone icon is lit up on it and I have a phone number which it shows through the app, so I’m assuming I’m all ready to go if I want to hook a phone up to it. So it’s nice to know I have that option now if I ever need it. I don’t currently work from home, so I don’t need it at the moment. Definitely recommend though and worth the money. It’s also 3.1 DOCSIS so at least you’ll be set for awhile with this one even if you don’t need it right now. It will get you all the speed you need and comes with 2 VOIP phone jacks and 2 Gigabit ports which is nice.

Difficult to establish service but rock solid
Difficult to establish Xfinity voice service, does not automatically set up with Xfinity as advertised, but once Comcast finally got it remotely configured with their system, rock solid, reliable, with excellent VOIP voice quality. I highly recommend, but you will have a 30+ minute service outage until Comcast gets it remotely set up. You also have two separate MAC addresses for the device - I apparently gave Comcast the wrong one which delayed my service.

So far, so good. Delivering on high speed!!
Ever since it was installed, there was a big difference in speed over my old router. It has been very solid performer with my Comcast Extreme Pro speed (600 Mbps).
